Heat Again

It seems to me that our summer shifted. Where before (wayyy before), July & August were our hottest months, now the heat is mid-August to mid-October. At least, that is how it appears to me over the past few years.

Mary Jo -

I agree. I was telling a couple of people recently that our seasons seem to be getting more and more "delayed" out here in SoCal. The Summer heat seems to be happening later, well into Fall. The Fall weather happens more in December. The Winter weather often times doesn't start to get really wintry (like as far as heavy rain) until February. There are always some exceptions here and there, but I agree that it seems things have shifted a bit.

The heat of September and beginning of October always surprises me in California--but it shouldn't because I should know better! It is like this every year. September is notoriously a VERY hot month, and there are often wild fires associcated with it.

We went to Disneyland early last October, and I am not doing it again. They have it all decorated for fall, but the temps are like H-E-double hockey sticks!

I would rather have June gloom and Jolly July--and then Delicious December! My new slogan is "forget the Fall!":rotfl2:

I'm the same way. I always know that September is going to pack a mighty punch in terms of heat, and yet it still surprises me. It's actually much less common for it to rain in September than it is to be extremely hot, and yet I am always shocked nonetheless!:rotfl2: October is often not much better.

I like December! Then again, even December is beginning to betray me, with random crazy 80-degree days and 90-degree days.

I've been there 4 times in a Sept or Oct since '07, and I've never once encountered heat like is being described. In '07, it was nearly cold some days. We went back in December and it was warmer most days than it had been in September!

This news is...not happy-making for me. :( Sure, I'm quite a bit lighter than I was the last times I had to deal with high heat, but still. Dang.

You must not have been at DLR in late September/early October of 2008 - it was over 100 degrees early in the week, slowly dropping to upper 90's, then upper 80's.

And during opening week of Halloween Time in September 2010, it was something crazy like 115 degrees (or higher). It was bad.

Last year, on opening day of Halloween Time it was in the mid-to-upper 70's and overcast for half of the day.

In 2007, over opening weekend of Halloween Time, it was raining heavily on and off - and when it was not raining it was sunny and in the 80's.

The heat is usually a big factor in how we plan our days. Visiting Carsland in the middle of a hot afternoon is too much for me. DCA in general usually feels like a hotter park, to me.

I think it is, dl has more mature trees.

Hi Sherry! :) We were at DL in late Sept/early Oct in 2008 & I too recall it being VERY warm!! Even in the evening. I remember everyone being dressed up for the party (in DCA at the time) & quite literally melting (their makeup)!!

Good luck! I was there during the 108 degree Friday (and 105 degree Saturday) a few weeks ago and it was awful. Being from Arizona I'm used to the heat, but it's just so different in the parks. Plus the heat killed my appetite and I didn't even want to eat all of the goodies I was looking forward to so much. The thought of eating a corn dog in that heat really grossed me out. LOL

The parks do sell these personal squirt bottle fans, but I didn't like them. They were heavy (because of the water) and despite the shoulder strap they were awkward to carry. Plus I didn't think the fan produced nearly enough wind. And while it's just water, you wind up squirting everyone around you in line. No it's not harming anyone, but it's kind of startling if you don't expect it.

I was very jealous of the people I saw with these: http://www.amazon.com/Travelon-Spee...8&qid=1348788886&sr=8-4&keywords=personal+fan

I had little baby washcloths in my purse to constantly mop the sweat off of my face. LOL

We were there at the same time and it was absolutely miserable. We spent so much time in the hotel room trying to cool off...we will never go in September again.

You must have not encountered "typical" weather on your trips then. Weather.com says:

•August is the average warmest month, followed by September, then October
•The average coolest month is December.
•The lowest recorded temperature was 30°F in 2002.
•The maximum average precipitation occurs in February.

This is much hotter than average, though. September is not only very hot in Anaheim, but everything is so dried out from the long hot summer.

Our December trips (we have gone the first week of December for 10 years) are typically mild in day, to very cold at night. I have lots of pics of me in my long down coat and a scarf waiting for fireworks. We have had a few trips in December that are all about the rain, which makes it another kind of adventure. So far, no hot spells in December for us. And once that sun goes down (and it goes down early in Dec!) it gets cold fast. In September you still have the heat mixed with a late sunset.

Yea their predictions are worthless more than 5 days out.... It was supposed to be 80-85 next week up until a couple of days ago. All of a sudden the temps started rising the last couple of days... I don't know if they even factored the hurricane coming in up from the south yet... :confused3

Good point. Kinda like how good TouringPlans crowd predictions were.

Saw the post for the misters and ran to WalMart. We bought 3 for $2.50 each.
We will be there Monday and need to stay cool.
Thank you for posting the link.

Hot weather for Sept or Oct is not strange at all. Typically the hottest month on average is August, but the all time heat record was set in September. On Sept 27, 2010 LA had its hottest day on record with a high temp of 113 degrees.

Something I'd like to point out (and I'm going on Tuesday myself with 100 degree temps) is that it is getting dark earlier. So you have sunset at like 6:30, rather than closer to 8, and the sooner the sun dips below the horizon, the better!

I've heard that the reason why Disneyland is so much quieter on rainy days is that so many visitors are locals with passes, and since they can go whenever they want, they stay home when it rains, leaving only the out of town guests. Sooooo...maybe a heat wave will have the same effect? Anyone have any experience with this?

I know, I'm sort of grasping at straws to find some sort of silver lining in this weather forecast.

Oh well, I'd rather be miserably hot at Disneyland than comfortable at home!:)

This is definitely true in FL, when I lived there, we would go to the beach, WDW etc on nice days, not blisteringly hot days.

LOL I was actually visiting LA on that day, too. I'm apparently very bad luck and I bring the Arizona heat with me on trips.

We'll be there on Saturday and Sunday ... 45% humidity for tomorrow seems fairly low :confused3

Chance of rain:0%
Wind: WNW at 9 mph
Humidity:45%
UV Index:7 - High
Sunrise: 6:45 am
Sunset: 6:40 pm

Sunshine and clouds mixed. Hot. High around 90F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph.

I'm a long time Californian. August, September and often October have always been our hottest months. Aug. and Sept. especially. I remember the kids could never wear their new school clothes back to school because it was too hot. The worst October we ever had (at least it seemed it to me) was Oct. 1975 when I was 9 months pregnant! Our fire season it at it's worst in October. Sorry guys.

If you encounter extreme heat, it's just another reason to go back to your hotel and swim or nap in the midday. Or if that's not an option, spend some quality time with Mr. Lincoln and other indoor, neglected attractions, or on a shady terrace somewhere in the park, people-watching, with a cool drink. :)

thats the one im getting my dh is picking it up now they were 7 bucks till this afternoon and i just happened to get it pick up in store today not bad for 4 bucks i think it will work and at least help keep us cool

I just stopped by my Walmart and found a semi-beat up large mister...the only one left so I bought it (works fine). It was on a clearance end cap so you might want to check those.
