Heat Again

I was in DL from the 15th to 23rd. There were some toasty days! And it was way more humid than I am used to. I am from the interior of British Columbia Canada. We do see hot weather in the Summer. Often 35-39 degrees Celsius for the better part of a month. (high 90's-low 100's for the Imperial crowd), but we are dry...we are in the desert. Yes I said desert and I live in Canada! lol

That being said I am a West coast girl so I am a big heat wimp!!!!! I HATE the heat!!! I am good until about 35 C (95F) and I am really miserable after that. When I heard about the heat predictions for when we were going to be down I panicked! Not going to lie...it was not pretty! All that planning, all that saving.....it made me feel ill that the heat could out a damper on that. I had not planned on record breaking heat!!!!

I will tell you it was not as bad as I had feared! We dealt with it. We drank A LOT of water. We scheduled water breaks in every 30-60 minutes. I took collapsible water bottles from platypus that I refilled at fountains. The fountain water is filtered and good. I also used lemonade powder or the MIO squirt flavours. A regular plastic water bottle is fine if you have a back pack to carry it...just keep refilling it.

We went early... rope drop. Even then during the week days it was already hot, but it was better than mid afternoon! We used FP's more than we would have if it was cooler. We kinda alternated inside rides with outside rides. I know which rides have lines that are mostly inside! (Luigi's STARTS inside...but not for long!lol!) We wore hats. We wore sunscreen.......industrial strength water proof sweat proof. The one day I did not wear a hat I burnt my scalp in the part of my hair!!! I had a good lesson in vanity as most of my make-up was sweated off well before noon! hahahaha!!! We did buy a spray bottle fan there and it worked nicely although was bulky and awkward. If you can get something smaller before going do it, otherwise the ones in the park are fine....just take turns carrying it! We splurged on frozen lemonades more than if it was not as hot, but it was well worth it.

One day my DS got a bit of heat stroke. Started to feel a bit ill and was flushed. DH took him into a washroom and soaked him. His head and shirt were soaked! We found shade and had cold drinks and got some food into him. I kept the little fan on the back of his neck. 10 mins later he was fine. Just keep an eye on your kids and keep them hydrated.

We did head back to the hotel about 3:00 most days and had a swim, break and snacks. We would head back after 6pm if the kids wanted to. If they did not we took an early night.

Even in the heat we walked to and from our hotel. We stayed at the Sheraton Park. It was not unbearable. We do walk a lot and are pretty active in our daily life though. We did take the ART twice when it happened to be there as we were leaving. Sometimes we stopped at the 7-11 for a Slurpee on our way back if it was really hot.

So don't be too stressed about the heat. You will still have fun. It IS Disneyland after all!!!!! Just be careful and be prepared. We had a BLAST and take it from me....if I had fun in the blistering heat, anyone can!!!!!

So mention that you went back to your room at around 3, did you, or would you still do this if the park close at 8?

Yeah, the heat is just a blast here in CA. The one thing I tell people is to never, ever, ever trust weather sites when it comes to SoCal weather, I'm sorry but it's inaccurate and it's not that reliable. I do not find CA weather reliable in any sense. For example a few years back it was pouring rain for ONE day, and it was in the low 60s and the next day it was 100 degrees and it was supposedly "winter". Which by the way, in my opinion does not happen here, it's hot and then less hot. lol

I'd advise anyone just to assume it will be warm, and sometimes even hot. One day it may be in the 80s, the next it could be 100+ degrees and it's a shocker LOL. I would rely on checking the weather that day instead of the day before, because it changes that often I have found.. even then it can be wrong. (As many Californians know for example they could say "it will rain today!" and guess what? it doesn't rain. not even a drizzle) CA weather is a funny thing.

Just bring fans, and misters. I'd bring a jacket just in case (because you never know) but generally I have found October months to be rather warm and very windy (so make sure you have hair ties if you don't want the hair blowing in your face due to SA winds.) I was really hoping for a cool down... hmph... oh well...

We were there for 8 nights, six day park hopper. So perhaps did not feel as pressed for time. We did go back mid afternoon to return later even when the parks closed at 8. My DD and I did the Happiest Haunts tour on the Wednesday so we stayed from open to close that day, DH ad DS stayed until 5 and went to a ball game as planned.

On Sunday we went back at 4-ish and went back at 7. On the Monday we went back mid afternoon and returned after dinner for a couple hours. Tuesday we did Universal. Wed DD and I stayed open to close. Thursday we stayed until before 4 and called it a day. Friday we stayed till 3 and returned at 6. Sat we left at 3-ish and came back around 7.

Our biggest problem was leaving in the afternoon!!! The kids would have stayed if we let them. We had to kind of set a time we were leaving. So it gave us time to relax and come back.

My brothers and families were there with really small children the 13th to 16th. They would leave mid afternoon and return after dinner as well.

If I were doing it again I would def go back and have a break even on days the park closes at 8 provided it was walking distance. I am not one for waiting for transit. It only took us 10-15 mins to walk back to our hotel so did not eat a lot of time. The heat does sap a lot of energy from you. Taking a planned break or going earlier will give you the energy you need to have fun! Earlier in our stay everyone could have gone 48 hours if we let them! The second half of our stay the heat was def taking a toll. I really think if we over did it the first few days we would have paid for it later!

It seems to me that our summer shifted. Where before (wayyy before), July & August were our hottest months, now the heat is mid-August to mid-October. At least, that is how it appears to me over the past few years.

Dude, ive been saying the same thing up here in Oregon the last few years! Glad someone else is thinking the same thing.

Hi, Eddygirl, its great to hear from another British Columbian. I'm impressed that you can handle up to 35; we start whining when it hits 30 here in the Fraser Valley.

Thanks for the great tips. We're planning the same basic strategy as you, so I'm feeling better about how we'll do in the heat. I guess we'll have to make a Walmart stop on the way to the airport for a hat for me since I can't seem to find mine. I always burn my scalp when I'm out in the sun, so its a good thing you reminded me.

Alright California heat wave, bring it on!
