Is it possible to eat reasonably healthily on a 3 week florida vacation ?

Breakfasts should be ok - staying in an apartment and will buy nice cereals, fruit and juices etc.

And evenings shouldnt be too bad - ponderosa etc - as long as I have the will power to keep away from steak and chips. They do lovely salads and fruits.

but its lunches I am worrying about. Last time we went to disney I was 4 stone heavier and ate everything in sight, and it was always burgers and chips etc for lunches. I just cant remember seeing anything vaguely healthy like a nice wholemeal sandwich or a salad etc.

Found out I was bordering on diabetic, and needed to cut down on sugar, and it finally gave me the kick up the bum I needed to lose a bit of weight as well. Still have another stone or so to go, and I really dont want to put on any weight on holiday !

Went to Blackpool pleasure beach for the weekend recently and struggled as everything was junk food, and I am really worried about 3 weeks of temptation - especially all the lovely world food at epcot.

Am I going to be able to cope ? without putting on shed loads of weight.

I have been to WDW 4 times since having DD2 and all the time being on WeightWatchers (which incidentally is great! I lost 37.5 lb after having DD)

Each time I gained 4 or 5 pounds which wasn't too bad as I ate lovely food but did not gorge myself. Very often we only had 2 meals a day, as the potions are large this was enough.

I admit there aren't always healthy choices available at fast food places but you can still do what I think of as 'damage limitation'.

Try to stick to water and diet coke, other drinks will have tons of sugar. At breakfast buffets have fruit first then a plate of hot food. Try not to go back for pastries, cookies. At the villa I used to have fresh melon followed by a cinnamon bagel with low fat Philadelphia.

Avoid having candy and sweets every day. An ice cream here and there is fine but a fruit lolly (called a juice bar there, Disney do a Minnie Mouse strawberry one, I am sure it is less than 100 cals) is better.

You will do so much walking that you can treat yourself. You can eat well without going nuts. I used to gain a stone every time we went eating Cookies and Creme Oreo bars, snacking on crisps at night, drinking Cherry Coke. It was awful when I got home. (I have since found out they sell Diet Cherry Coke in stores but not at the parks- yummy)

I know food is a large part of the fun at Disney, it is for me anyway! but with all the exercise you will be able to treat yourself. Just get back on track when you get home.

Hope that helps,

Well done on losing 37.5lbs thats great.
With only a few weeks before we go I am starting to stress a bit. I hope to lose a few more lbs before, and will try to be good, but I am worried if I start having a few bad things I might go into full blow out mode ! My OH is a bit of an ice cream monster, so the minnie mouse lolly sounds perfect.
I think the aeroplane seat will be a lot more comfortable this time - the phrase sardines in a tin comes to mind !!
I will definately be steering clear of coke as caffine does very strange things to me, and I will be totaly hyper by just being in disney. My other half says I acted like a kid the whole time we were in florida last time (I'm 33 going on 13 !!), but at least florida orange juice is fab.

If you look at the Allears website they have menus for all Disney restaurents and snack places, I was looking at them last night and I did notice that they do seem to be offering more salads and healthy stuff in the parks now. Im vegetarian and it used to be that the only thing I could eat in the parks was fries but now they do offer vege stuff which is also quite healthy.

You will be fine, just picture yourself as you are now and how you were, or look at some of the extremely overweight Americans as an incentive to keep on a healthy eating plan.

I had oats/raisins plus fresh fruit for breakfast at the Ponderosa. Lunch/tea time was a bit difficult if we were in parks usually opted for the salad or sandwich option. Thunder Falls in IoA did a fantastic chicken salad with nuts and things, best meal I had over there. We tended to use Subway alot for large sub sandwiches filled with salad and protein of your choice.

Drink water.

I lost 2 stones from July to November 2004 in preparation for July's Orlando holiday and upped the exercise. As a result I was on the go from 7 am till 11 pm, only feeling tired at bedtime whilst in Orlando. Remember the healthy eating will give you the much needed energy to get around the parks.

I did put on a couple of pounds over the holiday. I did wish I had been a little bit less strict with myself when I got back though and had indulged a touch more but there you go. What I found worse was the week I came back, getting used to the hours and feeling depressed about being back and not knowing when I was going to get back again. I ended up just eating everything I fancied and put on a couple of more pounds.

Back to (mostly) healthy eating now and exercising. We are back to Orlando in July so I want to keep my fitness up because I will need it. :)

Sweet Tomatoes is supposed to sell loads of lovely salads together with pizza and pasta. I didn't get to try it this time because we were always somewhere else when we felt hungry but am determined to get there next year.

Hi there
We went to Sweet Tomatoes at the top of I drive a few times last time we were there and its fab. we cant wait to go there again in 8 weeks!!!!!!!!!
Tons of different salads to choose from and then there is a soup section, jack pots, fresh fruit, pizza, pasta and a desert station. It is about $6. Really tremendous value. If you put Sweet Tomatoes into a search engne it should bring up a menu.Enjoy

The last time I went to orlando, I lost 8 pounds by the time I came home. I had bran flakes and banana for breakfast, a very light lunch some days of salad and a small ham roll, and in the evenings around 5.30pm we had a proper meal in the hotel resturant.
We did'nt eat every night in the restuarant i think there were 4 evenings we just had a snack in our room. I drank nothing but water and as we were walking most of the day or relaxing by the pool, I did'nt get as hungry like I do when I'm at work sitting at a computer all day.

I really don't think you will have a problem, your body has adjusted to eating less food now. Just enjoy your trip and don't stress yourself out about calories. Everything in moderation.

Well the last time i was in Florida, i too was on a diet and managed to eat healthy all the time! Breakfasts arent a problem if staying in a villa, evening meals are also not a problem as they do a lot of salads, fresh fish chicken etc. I found that in most restaurants, both on site an off, you can ask for steak or chicken to be grilled so they use no fat and you can always have a jacket potato or salad with them. The other thing that isnt too bad s asta, just avoid any creamy sauces, a tomato based one isnt too bad usually.

Lunches i found more trickey but there are a few places in Disney that do salads, theres a great place in downtown disney that do bagels and sandwiches. Most parks sell fruit too, a few of the parks sell turkey legs too, which are soo yummy and low in calorie as they are not cooked in muc fat, just their own juices! (i have a friend who used to sell them in the animal kingdom!)

I stuck to all that last time and managed to lose weight - due to all the walking and humidity lol. But you can allow yourself some treats, i just like to go for the healther options such as not fat frozen yoghurt instead of ice cream or an ice lolly etc.

We are not long back and I lost half a stone without even trying. we had toast and or pancakes for breakfast and either a light sandwich or fruit for lunch. we felt it was just so warm we just drank and drank. At night we always splashed out and had steak but with baked potato and salad and...................... key lime pie :teeth:

Another vote for Sweet Tomatoes its a great place to eat,its not the sort of place you have to dress up in either, great for popping into on the way home from the parks. We went there a few times on our last visit.
Its a shame its an American franchise, hope they bring it over here someday.

We love Sweet Tomatoes too and so cheap!!

We always say how great it would be to have them at home too, BUT would they be as nice - such fresh food and good service, at a good price??

I'm looking forward to trying Sweet Tomatoes when we go in 19 days...hooray!

Thank you all for your suggestions, I am feeling a lot more positive about it all now. :cool1:

The all ears web site is great, I have never seen that before. It tells you all the kiosks and restaurants in the whole of disney and all the food they sell and the prices, its great.

Anyone know if subway sell anything other than white rolls ? I am on the GI diet and Im supposed to stay away from white flour.

Regrding the all ears info about restaurants and diet foods - Is there anything similar for universal studios/sea world and IOA ?

Subway has about 5 different types of bread, we usually just went for the wheat.
