I need suggestions and this board never fails me when it comes to these types of questions.:cool1:

My son has wrestling practice at 6:30 am each morning. He really doesn't feel up to eating before practice, and has about 20 mins between practice and school that he can eat breakfast. The school makes it next to impossible to have a warm breakfast (not that it's necessary to have a warm breakfast every day, but some days would be nice). The cooks won't let the kids use a microwave, so they try to get the parents to buy into the crap breakfast they serve every day.

I need some ideas of some filling, somewhat healthy things he could take with him and eat before school.

I am going to also try getting him to drag himself out of bed 20 mins earlier in the morning but we all know how that goes.

He also says he doesn't really like to eat too much before practice because he doesn't feel the best during practice if he eats a lot.

Any ideas of what he could throw in his bag and eat that will give him enough fuel until lunch? The lunches at the school aren't too bad actually...they now serve all the whole wheat, healthier lunches so I don't mind that...but he has tried the breakfasts and says they are "gross". :rotfl:

I am making my grocery list and figured I'd see what ideas you guys have for me!:)

How about making and freezing some breakfast burritos? Then he could just zap one in the microwave on his way out the door.

Our daughters like the Cliff protein bars. You could also do a bagel with peanut butter for something filling, with some protein to keep him fuller longer.

I take a wide mouth thermos, fill it with boiling water, and about ten minutes before I want to eat, I throw instant oatmeal in, and close up the lid again. When I'm ready to eat, I've got some piping hot oatmeal :D

I'd go with a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter on the way out the door. Not too heavy, but gets him a bit of energy for wrestling. Or, a banana or apple are very digestable and shouldn't interfere with practice. Afterwards, what about cold pizza? Homemade muffins - pumpkin, blueberry, etc. Cheese sticks for protein.

Good luck!

DD is in her 4th year of varsity swim with 5:30 am practices (that are 30 minutes from home). She eats a small carb breakfast before swim and a bigger breakfast after swim on her way to school.

If he wants a warm breakfast and you don't have microwave, invest in a small thermos and/or insulated food container. DD and I make up veggie/egg/cheese patties ahead of time, freeze them, and then warm them as needed. Once warm/hot, I put them in a shallow soup thermos (that I pre warm with hot water). I lightly toast whole wheat bread or English muffin , wrap it in a cloth napkin, and pack them up together in a bag with a thermos of tea or cocoa or a shelf stable organic chocolate milk box (pricey, but convenient...available at Costco).

Oatmeal with a bit of brown sugar and milk is creamy and yummy in a wide mouth thermos as well. If you make crockpot oats he can just scoop a serving into the thermos in the morning and toss on some sugar or maple syrup and then there will be oatmeal left for everyone else! I also make a baked oatmeal on the weekends sometimes so that the are leftovers for the week.

Muffins made with higher protein ingredients like flaxseed and nut flours, plus healthy stuff like shredded carrots, pineapple, applesauce, raisins, nuts, oatmeal, peanut butter, might also be a good choice. Easy to grab and go.

Homemade yogurt parfaits aren't warm, but they are good. Pack up yogurt in one container, granola in another, and some diced fruit in a third. He can dump the fruit and granola over the yogurt when ready to eat. Just don't forget the spoon.

Bagels are easy to top with nut butter and/or cream cheese, wrapped, and tossed in a bag. Again, not hot but super easy... And it could even be made and packed up the night before!

Good luck to your DS this season!............P

Yogurt with Grape Nuts is pretty good. Not hot, but easy (don't mix them together too far in advance or it gets mooshy).

If you are looking for hot, scrambled eggs microwave very well and homemade scrambled egg and cheese burritos are easy to make. 30 seconds in the microwave and out the door.

I just made these delicious Pumpkin & Banana Baked Oatmeal Bars if your son by chance likes pumpkin pie flavor & bananas. They are super yummy, almost dessert-like, and hold their shape well so you could cut them up and individually wrap them (and possibly freeze them, not sure) so he can grab one from the fridge and either microwave it for 30-45sec or just eat it cold. The oatmeal and pecans in them will help keep him full. They are very healthy, too.

I have also made chocolate banana muffins also from Skinnytaste.com that are a breakfast food as well and they were pretty good.

I make from-scratch belgian waffles and freeze them and we either pop them in the toaster or microwave them (if we don't have as much time) and I will sometimes spread Nutella or peanut butter on one and eat it in the car.

The drinkable yogurts are great for grab and go, but liquid meals do not keep me feeling full no matter what.

I also used to make breakfast burritos and froze them for my husband. He really liked them.

These are some GREAT ideas!

I've done breakfast burritos in the past - completely forgot about those!:thumbsup2

You guys are always full of great ideas...I knew you'd come through for me.:cool1:

THIS is a great idea. I have never thought about doing that! Now of course, I don't eat grains hardly at all anymore being gluten-free, but this is a GREAT idea!!

I like to bring smoothies with me to work. I blend up coconut milk, water, frozen berries, ice, protein powder, and chia seeds, put it in a portable drink container, and keep it in the fridge. When I'm ready to hit the road I put it in a soft-side cooler and it stays cold for a good long time! Just shake and drink. Actually, this is what I had for breakfast this morning!

Other options I like are:
whole milk or greek yogurt with berries and almonds on top (I do this a lot when traveling)

Larabars or Kit Organic Bars (though there is a fair amount of natural sugar from the dried fruit in them.... but better than processed stuff!)

apple and almond butter

apple or pear and chocolate mousse (1 ripe avocado blended with 4 T coco powder and a little bit of real maple syrup or raw honey to sweeten to taste- sounds weird, but it's OH SO GOOD.)

Turkey and cheese rollups (I use Applegate Farms turkey and raw cheese from Trader Joe's) and a piece of fruit- orange, berries, apple, pear, grapes, whatever!

When I ate grains I used to make a "Breakfast Cookie"- here's my video recipe (it's really SO good): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyxgW9hENuo

Hard boiled Eggs (pre-peeled)

Coconut Flour Pumpkin Bread: http://anniessimplelife.blogspot.com/2012/10/grain-free-pumpkin-bread.html I keep these in the freezer for on the go snacks. You can also omit the pumpkin and replace it with applesauce and throw in some blueberries for a yummy blueberry bread, too.

Ok, I think that's plenty :lmao:

I swim at 4:45am and get up just after 4am to get ready. I eat a banana before practice. On the way home from a long, 2 hour practice, I eat another banana. But, when I want something fuller, I eat an Erin Baker's Breakfast Cookie. Totally portable, yummy, freezable and 300 calories so they fill you up. http://www.bbcookies.com/shop/home.php

We always have Cliff and KIND bars in the house. Dd16 didn't have a lunch until this year, and ds14 doesn't have one. My younger kids tend to walk to school eating bagels.

A piece of fruit, some cheese and a few almonds.

A peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

A hard boiled egg and a yogurt.

A granola bar and some milk.

cereal (he can bring it in a tupperware container) and buy milk at school

Make a smoothie and pour it into a thermos or insulated bottle.

And remember, 'breakfast' doesn't have to be 'breakfast food'. My kids favorite breakfasts include dinner leftovers (especially pasta meals and pizza)

Dd doesn't eat sandwiches, so I have to get creative with her lunches. One of things I do is the wide mouth jar a pp discussed, and I put mini pancakes and scrambled eggs in it. I make the mini pancakes ahead of time, but it's super easy to scramble an egg in the morning. I put a tea kettle on to boil while I'm getting everything else ready. While I'm cooking the eggs and heating up the pancakes, I let the thermos warm up with the boiled water. It stays hot until she goes to lunch, so I'd assume it would work when he got to breakfast.
