I'm not sure what we will do for health insurance when my husband retires. Does anyone know the going rate for a family of 3 on either private insurance or Obama care, or if Obama care is based on a percentage of income then what percent is it, thanks. We can keep what we have now but I think it would be extremely expensive.

I believe you can go on healthcare.gov and view various plans and prices. You may be able to get a tax credit if your income is low enough.

This would be highly specific to where you live, what kind of coverage you want. what type of deductible and co-pays you are willing to put up with etc. You should be able to go onto your states insurance website and play around with the numbers.

Just wondering how old your depended will be at that age? How far away from retirement is your husband? IF it isn't this year there is no way to tell what you might pay as it changes each year.

I think a lot of it depends on where you live. The healthcare.gov site is the place to look.

Some states (Illinois at least), they have like a "healthcare navigation" place where you go in and somebody will walk you through it. It is the same as what you would find online by yourself, but you just have somebody there with you to help you fill out the stuff (and it's free).

There should be a variety of choices depending on what deductibles and coverage you want. A lot of the price is based on income, which I think would vary from state to state.

I got points once for using the "slang" term for the Affordable Care act. I guess times change.

My SIL just tried to go through affordable Care Act, but the cheapest policy was going to cost her $1400 a month with a $12,000 deductible. NO way could she afford that!!! She finally find a company called CompanionLife and went with their health insurance policy. It is going to cost her $700 a month and zero deductible. I don't know the entire details, but it was a relief she found something she could semi-afford.

I believe the plans for 2016 are not available to view until after October 1st.

My SIL just got notice that she is going to be let go from her job (down sizing) and will lose her health insurance. She couldn't afford Cobra, so she checked out prices for plans with ACA this past week and talked to someone that helps navigate the plans. The info she got had to do with 2016 (well that is what the person from the ACA said). I guess the people that navigate ACA don't have the right information?

According to the healthcare.gov website, 2016 rates will be available to preview starting the 3rd week of October. Open enrollment begins on November 1, 2015.

She could call back in a couple of days and get more on the details for 2016 information release.
Edited to add: just noticed the post above mine with more specific info.

Her navigator stated $1400 a month is for the year 2016. Maybe he can see the prices for 2016 and told her what she can get and received. Anyway, she can't afford any plans through the affordable care act, but she found a company outside ACA that was affordable.

I can't imagine that's accurate unless she has a family of 10 or something like that. For my husband and I to get a really good plan with a low deductible it's only $500 a month. A plan with a larger $2,500 deductible is $300 a month.

OP, as others said, it depends on your state and other circumstances. Even if you can't find the 2016 rates just yet, you can at least get 2015 estimates to ballpark.

That's why I call it the Non-affordable health care act and many around my area do as well. You got a good rate and it does depend on where you live from what I can tell. My neighbor, without a job and only one daughter, could only do a best of $900/month with a $3000 deductible.

She should do what makes her happiest. It sounds like she's set.
If it were me, I'd do a bit more checking. And, as mentioned above, we're not sure how many people she's trying to cover. 2? 3? 10? That "quote" seems high.

Most insurance companies that I've dealt with have either single, couple, or family rates. Does AFA go strictly by the number of people in a family and not offer a straight up family plan? If it does have a family plan, then it shouldn't matter how many people are in the family- the rate would be the same if it's a family of 3 (2 parents, child or 1 parent, 2 children) or a family of 10.

I would think that Cobra would be better than this! $1400/month, YIKES, CRAZY HIGH!:scared1: GOOD LUCK to her while searching for a less expensive alternative!:goodvibes

I thought so too! The cobra was going to be around $1600. My SIL said the ACA website was horrible and so was the form she had to fill out. She worked with the navigator for over 2 weeks and the $1400 was the best deal they could find. She is trying to cover 4 people in her family.

I tried to do the multi-quoting, but it didn't work. I guess I don't know how.

She is trying to cover 4 people in the state of Florida. The CompanionLife (hope it isn't a scam) looks good for now.
