On the news now.. They want to move the inventory and pull in cash - regardless of profit loss.. In the weeks to come, non-Christmas items will be priced 70% to 90% off!!!!

Hang in there a few weeks longer and you will likely be able to purchase very expensive items that previously had only been on your "someday wish list"..:thumbsup2

I'll be watching closely for the 2 items that I would like "someday"..

The large flat screen tv that my son-in-law wants "someday" is already reduced $1400, but will be going MUCH lower than that in a few weeks.. If he scores it, he'll be one extremely happy guy because otherwise he would have to wait at least 2 years before they could "comfortably" afford it..:thumbsup2

I heard that (I think) Sears had all electronics 75% off today!! Don't know if it was true - didn't go, but that would be nice!!!

I sure hope they do! I went out today, just for Christmas stuff, and refused to head to the mall because I figure the prices will drop some more.

On the news tonight, they were saying how far under the retailers were and to be expecting more drops.

These serious discounts are really bad for everyone in the long run.

You're probably right - I know the retailers are not happy about it, but feel they have no choice.. The economy being what it is has backed them into a corner and they see no other way out..

For the consumer - it's "good" in the short term - purchases that otherwise could not have been afforded - but bad in the long term because it probably won't do much to help the economy or help people hang on to their jobs..

But either way - it's going to happen and if people need/want things that they would normally not be able to afford for several years (if ever) and they can get it for next to nothing now, it would be foolish to pass up those opportunities..

That's good. I hope to get an Ipod Touch this weekend.

We went out to the mall yesterday, and quite frankly, we were completely unimpressed with the prices they were charging on electronics. I don't know what they claimed the discounts they were offering were, but everything I saw was more expensive than I could have gotten it at regular price online. Phffft.

I went to Target yesterday and it didn't look any different than any other day after Christmas. Most of the Holiday themed stuff was 30 to 50% off. Several toys were 30% off -- but the store was pretty picked over. Valentines Day items are starting to hit the end caps.

I really think the stores put out these press released about their "Amazing Sales of the Century" and the news stations read them word for word. Its really more free marketing than news.

Fall and Winter clothes always go into deep discount mode in January, they need to move it out in order to start stocking spring.

Our newstation was at our local mall, and I really didn't see any HUGE sales that were any different from the normal after Christmas discounts.
I think the media/retailers are hyping this to get people to shop.

They also said to wait until after January 5th as the biggest discounts will come then.

I went to Macys today to look at their ties. What a joke. They are still priced in a Clinton economy. We are in a Bush economy. Those clowns need a reality check.

Oh wait...

I think right now they are hyping the 'sales' just to get people to the stores b/c most of the stores I went to did not have big deals at all.

You mean the sale prices that should actually be the true price all along?

We went to Macy's today with DS's gift card. Lesson for him in NOT wasting your money even if you have a card! A long sleeve tee with a screen print...$85! I laughed! That is insane! They are nuts! :sad2: We came out of the store empty handed.

I was at our mall today and didn't see any really great deals. I'll wait a few more weeks.

It has been reported over and over again that these sales would not be "now" - as in during the traditional "day after Christmas" type sales - but several weeks from now.. I thought I had mentioned that before - when encouraging people to wait before they rush out to purchase anything other than the usual after Christmas stuff: wrapping paper; cards; Christmas decorations; etc..

If you don't need those electronics or whatever immediately, hang in there for a few more weeks.. Right now the stores are trying to bring in whatever cash they can from the "traditional" after-Christmas sales.. Once that type of merchandise is gone, you should see the much larger reductions that have been reported on the news..

I wouldn't be discouraged by what you are seeing now - because the larger price reductions haven't started yet - nor were they scheduled to.. They are slated for later on and the bargain shoppers just have to be a little more patient.. I know it's hard - when you have money burning a hole in your pocket - but I would rather wait and see what happens in a few weeks, as opposed to spending money now - only to find that in a few more weeks the items I'm interested in end up being drastically reduced..

Of course the items I'm interested in aren't anything I can't live without - just items I would buy if they were drastically reduced - so it's pretty easy for me to be patient and just wait it out..
:thumbsup2

Just had our 30yo Kenmore Microwave go out at the end of cooking a frozen lasagna tonight. Guess I can wait a few weeks to see what happens with the prices:).

If you can live without one for awhile, might as well.. :)

If I were to purchase one of the items I have in mind (which is more of a "want" than a "need") and a month from now found I could have gotten it for half price or less, I'd shoot myself!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I know the sales was not great. I am waiting for the deep discounts.

DD and her DH didn't even bother to go out.. The things they are looking for are "big ticket" items for the most part - things that would be on a "wish list" for way down the road - but if the prices are reduced drastically in the next month or so, they will go ahead and purchase them now because it would be foolish not to.. (And they will be paying cash - as will I - if the items I'm looking for are among those drastically reduced..)

I have to do my shopping on-line, but they claim that many of these sales will also be available via the internet, so I'll be keeping a close eye out..;)
