We are heading to Hilton Head in a couple of weeks (that is if I can get the building 31 ghost story out of my head:sad:). We were planning on a day trip to Savannah as we did that a few years ago and loved it. I was wondering about visiting Charleston instead. It looks to be a little over 2 hours away so that is the big downfall for me. After driving 12 hours to get to HHI the idea of a long drive for a day trip and being away from the resort for 2 days is not so fun, but it is something we have never done and it looks beautiful.

So, any thoughts?:)

Thanks!

We're going to HHI in Aug and may stop at Charleston on the way home, that was the initial plan. We've been to Savannah twice and we stopped in Charleston on the way home from a cruise once...just briefly and it was another nice southern historic city like Savannah. So, you'll get the same thing from either but it is nice to see new places. We'd like to see more of Charleston. And, as for ghosts, both cities have many ghost tours. We did a nighttime tour in Savannah once and it was creepy cool. Savannah is one of my 2 fave cities I've been to (other is Halifax, NS...oh yeah, I also love Key West)...of course, aside from the Caribbean (not so much a city but an area).

Well we've been to HHI many times and usually go over to Savannah each trip (love Mrs. Booth's for lunch). We've also done Charleston. We love both places but probably lean towards Savannah because of the shorter trip. You might also consider visiting Beaufort. It is a short trip also and the downtown historic area has lots of neat shops and restaurants. If you have time you could do all three but then you're taking time away from HHI itself. You will have a great time regardless of what you pick.

We planned to go to Savannah, but we found there was so much to do at the resort and on the island itself that we never left :)

We've been to both Savannah and Charleston. Both are great cities to visit and no matter which you choose you'll be happy.

I'd give the edge to Savannah though. Its got a lot of good history and picturesque places. Our favorite place to eat in Savannah is the Olde Pink House. I did a review for it on FoodieTales that you might be interested in reading.

Charleston has a bit more civil war history. I've not been, but I know you can take a boat to Fort Sumter.

While I prefer Charleston as a destination in general, I would suggest Savannah or Beaufort from Hilton Head due to the shorter drives. Beaufort has a very nice waterfront playground if you are traveling with small children.

Both cities are worth the day trip, but like others have stated Savannah and wins by distance.

We did Charleston and Savannah last Fall. Both offer lots to see and do. The carriage rides in Charleston are great and give lots of history to the city. We also enjoyed an overnight in Savannah. We love walking around this city with its wonderful squares. Stayed at the Plantation Inn right by the Old Pink House. If you haven't read Midnight in the garden of good and evil that's a great book and movie based on actual events in Savannah. You can see the house and gift shop there. Also walking along the river is nice. Both cities offer lots to see. If you can only pick one make sure you do the other at another time. Both are worth the trip.

We're Charleston people, so I'd always recommend that over Savannah. Savannah is perfectly nice, but it's not Charleston. ;)

We tend to stay in Beaufort when we visit. It's a great old Southern city. The beach at Hunting Island is so nice and we love the downtown waterfront.

Charleston I see as a before or after trip, not a day trip from HH. Savannah I look as a day trip.

We do Savannah about every other trip because we love spending most of our time on the island. This July we are heading to Charleston on the way to HH.

By the way, if it is on your way I recommend a stop at Asheville N.C. As well.

Tell more on the haunted building 31.

There is a tree near Bldg 31 called the justice tree. It is said that people were hung on the justice tree. Bldg 31 has been rumored to house ghosts presumably hung on this tree.

Thinking of doing a May, 2015 HHI vaca!

The renovated villas and the trip reports are "CALLING ME"...

Sounds like such a RELAXING VACA!:cool1::thumbsup2

Would be FUN to see some beautiful sights in Savannah as we would fly and out of there! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Charleston, Savannah, Beaufort and even Bluffton are all nice options. I really want to do Savannah again, but the real daily decision for me is the drive time. Only you can decide!

If you go to Beaufort, stop in at Parris Island and go to the Marine Corps Museum.

You want history...THAT's history.

If you come to Savannah, you might want to take the trip out to Ft. Pulaski. You can drive to it (as oppose to having to take the very nice boat ride out to Ft. Sumter). You can also walk around the outside of the fort as well as on top and around the inside.

Just south of the city is Ft. McAllister. An earthen fort that was Sherman's last stop before his troops marched into Savannah. The "March to the Sea" ended there.

We have been to Savannah and Charleston many times. We prefer Charleston, but I would not do a day trip from HHI. Honestly, we never want to leave the island once we get there. We usually come a day early and spend the night in Savannah or Beaufort and then head to HHI the next day.
