Heading to HHI - Savannah, Charleston or both??

Beaufort is gorgeous and loaded with history. They have horse drawn carriage tours of the old antebellum houses. You can also drive out to Hunting Island with its gorgeous beach and jungle like atmosphere.

We are planning on going to HH in the fall. We are flying into Charleston and getting a rental car. We want to go the Charleston, Ft Sumter and Savannah for day trips. After reading this we will be checking into Beaufort too! How is the drive from Charleston to HH? I know it about 2 hours. Also, how is the parking in Charleston and Savannah? Any specific tours anyone recommends? Appreciate all information we can get, as this is all new to us :)

Thanks!!

I am another that votes for Beaufort. During the civil war it was union headquarters in South Carolina, as a result it was not burned like large sections of Charleston were. As a result it has a lot of pre-civil war antebellum architecture still intact. At the time of the Civil war it was the second largest city in South Carolina (behind Charleston) so there is a lot if history there. A lot of movies are shot there as it looks much the same as it did 200 years ago.

Charleston I see as a before or after trip, not a day trip from HH. Savannah I look as a day trip.

We do Savannah about every other trip because we love spending most of our time on the island. This July we are heading to Charleston on the way to HH.

By the way, if it is on your way I recommend a stop at Asheville N.C. As well.

CMOORE185, We live very near you (in Winfield). We are leaving for HHI soon. This will be our second visit to HHI & Disney's resort there, but our first time driving. I see you've suggested stops at Charleston & Asheville. Any suggestions as to a driving itinerary and/or suggested places to stay at these stops? We're leaving on a Wednesday evening after work & check in on Friday; coming home, we check out Friday morning & need to arrive home Sunday. Thank you!

Asheville is about 11 hours from you, and about 6 hours from HH. We have stayed at the Inn on the Biltmore Estates a few times and is my recommendation if you are willing to spend the money. The place is unbelievable and well worth the money. I also suggest a tour of the Biltmore Estate, the largest home in the U.S. The house and the grounds are a must see if you are there. We also have stayed at the Country Inn and Suites in Asheville and it is nice. Chimney Rock is near Asheville and also a cool thing to do. Charleston we have never been too, but will be there this coming Saturday. Staying at King Charles Inn.

Last year we did both, Charleston and Savannah.... We flew into and stayed in Charleston for a couple of days before driving to HHI, then we took a day trip to Savannah during our HHI stay. Hoping to go back for Spring Break next year :)

We plan to do Charleston this year. I want to visit Fort Sumter and do a harbor tour. In the past we have visited Savannah and Fort Pulaski.

We got to Charleston at about 3:30 today, a little later than we wanted because of some bad traffic. We checked into King Charles inn, it is very nice but pricey ($295 per night with taxes).

All we did today was walk around (no tours). Went to the market place, just so so, walked the pier and the park at the waterfront, very nice.

Could see Ft Sumter and the USS Yorktown at waterfront. Would really love to tour Yorktown, they even have a ghost tour, but do not know if we will have time tomorrow.

Went to dinner at Fleet Landing (mainly fish dishes). Sat outside right at water front. If you go there get a reservation as it is very popular. It was still very crowded when we left at 10:30 pm.

A lot of small bars and a very active night life. Saw a lot of walking tours going on in the evening.

Overall glad we came, the place reminds me of Savannah in a lot of ways.

Sounds very nice! Love walking tours.. If we get a reservation at 7 months for next May, think we may fly into Charleston, stay 2 days, then 5 at HHI...
Would love to do a walking tour of Charleston!:thumbsup2

Does anyone know if Charleston has Segways to see the city? Haven't been to Savannah, but doesn't Savannah have segways also? They look FUN also!:thumbsup2

We are planning a trip to Charleston/HHI at the end of September, it will be our first time to South Carolina and we can't wait!

From what I found out researching our trip, the historic district of Charleston doesn't allow Segways, but there is a company that does tours in Mount Pleasant, across the harbor (even though they are called Segway of Charleston).
