are all hdmi cables "created equal"? the price range for a 3ft cable at places like best buy tend to be between $60 and $90 for a 3ft length. costco has a set of componant cables and a 6ft hdmi cable for $89. i would rather have the 6 ft length. would the quality of the cable probably be adequate?

I order HDMI cables from
Tiger Direct.com or mwave.com or newegg.com. Check the prices on the cable your interested in before you shop!

It's like anything else. There's FANTASTIC cabling out there, and there's junk. You'll get what you pay for, and I can only hazard a guess but I'm guessing the $100 cable is made with higher quality components (actual cables, connector ends, etc).

If you have a good salesperson, the should have suggested a good, better, best example for you to better make your decision.

I'm using the free cable that Comcast gave us with the HD service on three plasma TV's right now. I think I'll order a more expensive cable from newegg(as an X'mas gift to myself) and see if anyone here notices a difference. I'll let you know my findings!

I always order the $25 range HDMI cables for HDMI movie box, PS3 etc. so I'll try the expensive one on those too.

I am interested in knowing anyones experiences with cables. I just purchased a new Sony LCD TV yesterday, but haven't picked it up yet.

Is there a big difference in the picture quality with the real expensive cabling?

I don't see a difference between Component and HDMI cables ( Sony LCD 42" HDTV and Dell 42" Plasma) I know in theory the HDMI can deliver faster data rates and for future applications I would just buy this. I'm sure some videophiles will swear they can see a difference. And if your TV is capable of 1080 Progessive scanning, you may!

The quality of the connectors is what you want to pay for I believe.

Note that HDMI cables are digital. It's very basic information - an electric signal that is either there, or it isn't. With the exception of a defective cable, all HDMI will transmit picture and sound equally well.

Component cables are transmitting analog signals. The quality of cable is much more important. But you probably don't need to go overboard. There might be a noticeable difference between $8 cables and $40 cables. But unless you are the type who hires professional to come out and tweak the settings on your TV, you probably aren't going to notice the difference between $40 cables and $150 cables.

You're 100% correct, I should have been more clear. I actually work in the A/V industry. Like another poster mentioned with HDMI cabling, the better your connectors are is where you'll see the difference, but in general, a digital signal is a digital signal, is a digital signal, so you are correct. :teeth:

This is a very timely thread for me. We just got a Sony LCD yesterday and Comcast will be out to install the digital and HD this week. I asked about the cable yesterday and was shown a $99 one at Best Buy that was the cheapest in that brand. I decided to wait!

You can just get the $6/6ft cable from monoprice.com. No problems and the best fidelity.

so what would you reasonably spend for a cable. is $40 about right? and if a 3 ft cable will do is in better to get a 6ft cable "just in case"? i would hate to end up needing 37 inches. is the length a factor?

Go with monoprice.com. They're well-known as the best value online for digital cables.

You know me -- I'm the first one to say that you should go for the more expensive stuff when it is better. However, in the case of digital cables, the $20-range cables are good enough for most people.

thanks. is there any efficiency or clarity lost with increased length of the cable?

They say to try to keep the cables to the shortest length possible, but the difference between three feet and six feet is pretty small. Problems are noted once these cables get longer than 10 or 15 feet.

I checked this out, then got confused as to exactly which cable was the HDMI. All I saw was this male/female stuff and went blank. Do you have an exact link to the cable? I am clueless, I only know where it was located and what it looked like at Best Buy!

I bought HDMI cables at SAM'S Club, I thnk they are made by Phillips. 6' cost around $20-22, much less than Monster Cables (a brand).

Everything appears fine on our HDTV, amazing picture quality. I didn't think I'd notice the difference. Boy was I wrong.
