Having Issues Finding a New Phone --- UPDATE pg. 11

I have AT&T and just got a new phone. It's the Samsung Eternity - It does have the touch screen technology but with a "skin" it doesn't show fingerprints or smudges at all.

It has the look & feel of the iPhone without the hefty price tag attached. Also a $50 rebate.

My best advice is to go to an AT&T store ( not a mall kiosk ) they are most happy to show you the features of all their phones and let you have hands on experience. i found the staff to be very knowledgable & helpful

I was actually looking at the Eternity last night. It seems interesting.

For those iPhone users out there, what package do you get so you can be on the Net so much? Does it rack your bill up each month?

Somewhere down the line, you will say "I wish I listened to Kevn and the others."
You have no idea how much I listen...in fact, DH sometimes gets annoyed with me. He says, "How about ______ for dinner?" to which I reply, "NO, Kevin said that place is mediocre". I know, I know, it is just an opinion but I see no point in wasting my time/money when I believe I would agree with Kevin anyway.
Okay, so I have another reason for my resistance to the iPhone: my nails. Hello? Did you not see that I am from Jerzy? I'm concerned that I won't be able to manipulate the buttons and NO I don't have claws, but still. lol

So many choices. I guess my issue is that when the Razr came out, it really just jumped out at me and I knew I wanted that phone. What makes the iPhone so good? What about the others? I don't need a GPS because I already have a brand new Garmin. I would not do much Internet stuff on there (I have the multimedia bundle so there's a limit on how much I can do) either.
I have nails but have no issues with my iphone.
To answer your other question, see this thread:

i have nothing to contribute, but thanks for the laugh. ;)

Think I said it in the iphone thread, but us UK users really do get a much better deal on phones! My (more or less, exchange rate depending) $70 p/m contract includes unlimited web use as well as 1200 minutes and 500 SMS messages.
Not to mention the phone is free!

Anyway, as Kevin says, if you can afford it you will never regret it!
As for who said the iPhone is 'old tech', I have to disagree. I'm constantly wowed by some new app or program, and I've always been one to get the latest and greatest phone!

One more thing, I recommend against getting one that is 'like an iPhone' as they just don't compare (in the Uk phones such as the LG Viewty and Samsung Tocco/Omnia come across as poor rip off versions).

Best of luck with your search :)
(ps, don't see my iPhone love as being from the typical point of view of an 'Apple fanboy', as I never had anything Apple before it, even prefering most other mp3 players to iPods).

:goodvibes

iPhone internet package is $30 per month for unlimited access. Same price as any blackberry or other PDA.

I still can't believe what a raw deal you guys in the US get on phones compared to us in the UK! Any ideas why it's such?

:goodvibes

Okay, so I have done some narrowing done.

1. No iPhone or Blackberry for me. The monthly cost is just not in my budget or mindset.

2. The Pantech Matrix is out. I saw it at AT&T yesterday and thought the screen and keyboard were too small.

3. Now considering the new Samsung Impression. An employee took it out of the box for me yesterday, but I need to see it plugged in before I buy it.

I have the Samsung Eternity and I love, love, love it. I really wanted the IPhone, but they hubby didn't like the extra charge per month. I've had the Eternity since December, and it's been great!

That is good to know! I have heard and read somewhere that the Impression is just the next version of the Eternity! Thanks!

i resisted the iphone for a while... eventually you just give in, once you have looked at everything else. I have had the Eternity and its a decent phone, but compared side by side with the iphone, its not even close. Not to mention, Samsung's horrible support. The Eternity has bugs that Samsung knows about and refuses to correct.

For example, I hope you like an ascending ringtone, because thats all you get. You can change it all day long to a regular one and it will only ring ascending. This is just unacceptable support to not release a fix. There are others, check www.samsung-eternity.com.

So what have you decided on Nikki?

I'm in a similar situation torn between an iphone and *dumbphone*. Number one I have an issue with 2 yr commitments but do like the subsidies provided by the carriers. 2nd the iphone requires that you keep a data plan on the phone for 2 yrs. While I can afford it, I cannot agree with this. I am also doing this with my wife so we are each getting new phones.

I've decided on getting the current 2 for 1 deal on the Samsung Eternity. My AT&T Store will have a new batch in tomorrow. I'll be adding unlimited texting to our Family Plan for $30 (this will cover 3 phones including my daughters). Then I'll get the discounted data plans for the 2 Eternity's for $10. Extra cost will be $50 per month but unlike the iPhone, if I don't like or find I'm not using these plans all the time, I can cancel them. :)

I agree there are a lot of things about the Iphone I'd love. I'm just not sure I need the extras but I do want a phone for connecting to the web on occasion when travelling and when away from the laptop. We'll see how it works out.

Hope you make out ok! :)

Quite honestly, I have no idea WHAT to get now. I am beyond confused! lol What is this $10 discounted data plan? Is it from AT&T then???

Phones with slide-out keyboards are definitely available on AT&T! We have about 4 right now.

Samsung Propel
Samsung Impression *Brand New this week*
Pantech Matrix
Pantech Matrix Pro

Also be on the lookout for the LG Zenon (Xenon? I have no idea how they're gonna spell it) - it should be out in the next week or 2.
*edit* The LG Xenon officially went on sale on our website today for $99. Touchscreen and a full keyboard! Very nice!

Is it true that the Impression is the new Eternity? How are the reviews? Is it better than the Eternity? How is the Xenon shaping up?

The ipone is a very useful phone. There are so many thngs you can do... plus the apps are awesome. Maps is a gps, phone and address directory, You can find anything anywhere...e.g. in an unfamiliar part of town that you aren't familiar with and u need a starbucks... the maps app lets you find the closest one. I haven't even begun to get into the world of apps they are the coolest. I have maps to all the wdw parks. It is a cool tool, phone, word processor, email etc.... Did I mention I love the iphone?

Okay, to settle it once and for all.... :)

I like the idea of the iPhone. It seems very cool and all of the apps are very fun and cool to get. However, I refuse to spend $39.99 a month for a phone plan PLUS another $30 for the data package so I can use the iPhone's net features (basically...everything!). That'd be $70 a month of more. That is just not something I am willing to shell out just for a cell phone.

Nikki....someday soon, you will utter the words "I wish I had listened to Kevin and the other DISers".

Trust me.

Kevin, you brat! You said that early on in this thread! ROFL

I want the iPhone, but over $70 a MONTH? I pay $48 a month for my phone now....that includes all the gov't fees, taxes, etc. plus my $39.99 phone service and $9.99 media basic bundle with texting and some Net use.

I stand by my words....

You will regret not getting the iPhone.

Listen to the man. He speaks the truth.

To really settle this, go and get an iPhone. You should have 30 days to return it if you don't like it. We guarantee you won't return it. By the way, this post was made from my iPhone as I sit on my patio enjoying the beautiful weather.
