Have you taken the NYS Teacher Certification Exams? HELP...

The NTE??????? Dawn, you and I must be the same age. :scared: I always compared that to playing Jeopardy.

I went back to school three years ago to become a teacher (my bachelor's degree is in engineering...), and just started at Christmas.

I have never been very good with grammar, spelling or punctuation! However, since becoming a classroom teacher, I am desperately trying to "brush up" on my spelling and grammar skills! I teach Grade 7 Social Studies and Tech, and the kids notice right away when I make a mistake! Even though we think "oh well, no biggie, I KNOW I am smart...." the kids are merciless! They expect (and they should!) that we can spell!

I am sure there are a couple of mistakes in my post!!!

Anyway, I still can't believe how different it is than other professions in terms of expectations....we are told in our District we are teachers 24/7....even off the job, and in the summer!

I agree with many of the PP, but I also know how horrible I am at spelling, and grammar! (so I have simpathy for the OP!) I have been embarrased a few times myself.

By the way, in Canada we do not take tests....all our universities are pretty close in terms of training, so we just have to apply for our certification....I don't know of any places in Canada we have to take tests....but maybe I am wrong.

Good luck on your exam,

I did not take your exam, but I took the others. In what sector will you be teaching?

I did see the "Takened," however, from the rest of your post I thought you were typing quickly. I thought it was tasteless for someone to comment on that so harshly. Don't worry about sarcastic comments. Most people who have to judge are harsh on themselves, and use it as a tool to hide their own idiosyncrasies :goodvibes

Good luck on your upcoming test! :) I will be taking two exams myself in the coming months! :)

Best of luck to all of us! :)

I noticed the "error" also. But all the OP had to do (and still can) was to go back and EDIT the title and correct it. The same thing goes for the other poster(another educator) who did not spell grammar correctly!!

Much Good Luck to the OP.

I have been teaching Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry for the past five years at one of the best high schools in the state, possibly nation. Each teacher has his/her own specialty. My specialty is obviously Chemistry, while an English teacher's specialty might be composition, grammar, literature, etc. I will give you one piece of advice though. If you use proper speaking skills and provide feedback to you students through proper written communication, then they will provide the same to you. If we have the duty to impart knowledge to our students, then let's impart it in a correct fashion. The exams really are not very difficult. If you have a 3.96 in an accredited graduate school then you will be fine. It sounds like you are stressing out for nothing to be honest. Just wait until you walk into your first class on the first day of your first schoolyear. Then you'll have you first test. The true test to see whether or not you have what it takes to be a teacher. No written test can ever prepare you for becoming a teacher.

There's a big difference between careless grammar mistakes/typos and not knowing the correct forms of verb tenses for a simple word like "take."

For what it's worth, I had no troubles with my Praxis tests (the teacher certification tests here) back when I took them. (I took the LSAT, too. Much more difficult!. ;) )

Honestly, I would go back and correct the title, but why would I when everyone is enjoying themselves? Additionally, I know how to edit my posting, but unaware of how I could correct the title? In all fairness, I can see why everyone was shocked that a teacher could make such a mistake, but I never correct or check for any typos when I am writing on the disboards. I actually never look at the keyboard! I just type away...
I guess that is my bad and I will have to always check my grammar for now on!
** PS Chem teacher- In NY, you do not have to always be certified to teach. Therefore, I have been teaching for two years! It has been the greatest experience of my life:thumbsup2

Hey everyone,
I am in the process of taking all my teacher certifications exam. My first one is this Saturday and it is the LAST. I could not believe it cost 88 dollars! Anyway, I heard from my peers in school, oh dont worry if you dont pass it you can take it again. However, 88 dollars is alot of money to me and I am very anal about passing tests. So does anyone have any advice or strategies for passing the LSAT? I know studying which is what I have been doing. If you dont have any advice how about some good disboard wishes:yay:
THANKS:goodvibes

Can you change the title of your thread to the correct spelling, please?

Get used to it. Teachers must be accountable for every word spoken. There's always going to be someone there to correct you and say, "And she's a TEACHER!"

This is absolutely true! Whether we like it or not, people tend to hold higher standards for teachers. For example, this past Easter Sunday I was at a family gathering and someone asked where Everest was located, well ...
I stated that it was in India and a nephew said, "I don't know what country it's in but I know it's in Asia."
I stupidly responded, "India isn't in Asia." My nephew said, "Yes it is!" and I immediately recognized my mistake!
Guess what the first words were out of another family members mouth? "And she's a teacher:scared1: "
Now, I did realize I made a mistake but it was regarded differently than if I were not a certified teacher(never mind the fact that the last time I was inside a geography classroom was as a student in the 7th grade)!

You just have to shrugged it off and admit that you made a mistake. Nobody is perfect, not even teachers(trust me, I know MANY of them;) )

It is actually hilarious that I use to think that the people on the disboards were friends I could always trust and count on. THINK AGAIN? I really do not care anymore about this thread, and will stop responding from this day forward. I am a successful teacher for two years now and an amazing graduate student, so think what you want!

I'm closing this thread. Regardless of the warning that I gave earlier, some people still seem to feel that it necessary to attack the OP's spelling as well as that of other posters. Since very few are interested in actually offering support or advise in the area of test-taking, this thread is serving no constructive purpose.

To the OP: Good luck on your exam.
