My dh got laid off from his job at Lucent Tech. last month:( so he has been looking for another job. He's a computer system administrator.

He just got a phone call today from a recruiter. He interviewed him over the phone and said someone would call him later today or tomorrow and that if he qualifies could he start on MONDAY!!

Isn't this kind of strange no formal interview in person? what if he has 2 heads or something? Neither he nor I have interviewed in along time but we have never heard of this?

It sounds too good to be true.. What do you think?

Sounds like it may be a temp agency looking to place him

I hope not...best of luck

I agree that it's probably a temp agency or head hunter, but that may not be all bad. Sometimes people can get good jobs that way.

Did the interviewer mention a company or a person that had recommended your husband to their company?
I think your husband should do research on the company first to find out it's background, and try calling the place to see if that person that interviewed him really does work for the company.
I have never heard of something like that being done, but I guess if a company really needs someone fast, it could happen.
Good luck to your husband.

He does know the company thats looking and they want him to contract to a large bank. And yes the person calling is a head hunter

My dad has been trying to find work as well and has gotten several of those kind of offers... they are rarely real jobs, they just dont come that easily. They are either head hunters, temp agencies, or things like sales reps, in which they work only off commission, etc etc.

Worth a shot looking into it, just be very careful.

Technically they're not allowed to discriminate against two headed people. :p
Good luck to you and your husband.

tricia.

I assist our HR manager in recruiting in the IT field. No, it is not uncommon for us to interview people over the phone and start them the within the next couple of days. When we get a new contract, they usually want someone ASAP. Good luck!

cool! we'll try not to get our hopes up but that sounds good! Thanks for all the kind wishes!

My SIL is a teacher who lived in NY. She had a phone interview with the Clark County school system in Las Vegas and was hired.

Good luck!

When my husband first started in the IT field, he started with a contracting company (temp jobs). He made good money and got a permanent position with the company he now works for. There are several companies who just hire their contractors vs. hiring outside. He may get an "in" with a great company that way!

I work for an IT recruiting firm. The telephone interview is not that out of the norm. Remember he is probably being hired as a contractor not a permanent employee. If its for a perm job there are always personal interviews. Alot of managers I work with feel one or two phone interviews will tell them enough to try the person out, they want to see how they interact with rest of their team. If it works they will keep them, if not after a few days they look for someone else. With the way the economy has been companies would rather hire a contractor, its much easier to get rid of a contractor than a permanent employee. Alot if time after 6mos to a year they will get hired permanent.

A temp job is better than no job. It's a paycheck coming in and a chance to get your foot in the door.

To clear up a few things here:

The company who called me is working as a recruiter for a Consulting/outsourcing company located in NJ. They have been contracted to find someone to fill an IT job at a large bank. The recruiter said that people from this company tend to stay where they are placed for "a long time". I would be working for the consulting company placed in the bank.

What surprised me was the phone interview tomorrow and possibly starting on Monday, my experience has been the two or three personal interviews then starting, if you get through the meat grinder. The recruiter kept on stressing that they were "moving quickly" on this. No kidding. I'd not heard of that before, of course I can swing it. ;)

One caution: Head hunters get paid a large fee for finding the right person. Make sure the company is paying that fee, and the head hunter is not looking to YOU to pay it.
