DH had a hip replacement when he was only 49. He had severe osteoarthritis due to landing in a tree when he was in Special Forces. He ran for years on it anyway, then switched to swimming and then even that was difficult. He finally made the decision to do it and he is more than happy with it. We can go on very long hikes, and the only limitations he has now is that he cannot run and he cannot do Army sit ups. The angle is wrong so he does an modified sit up. I forget that he had it done until we go through the metal detector when we fly. He gets wanded down, held up but that's about it. If he had it to do over again, he would have done it sooner.
