Have you gotten a COVID vaccine?

If you miss your second dose do you have to start over with the first dose if it’s out of the 3 or 4 week window?

The person who administered my vaccine said that the 3 weeks (Pfizer) or 4 weeks (Moderna) were just the earliest you should get the second dose. It is OK if the second dose is after. That agrees with what the CDC says.

I received the Moderna vaccine on January 4th, will get the second dose on February 2nd. I experienced a sore arm for about 4 days, nothing else.

I know about 40 people personally who have received the vaccine (all except for 2 received the Pfizer) and most I spoke with had no symptoms after the first vaccine except for a sore arm like me. The majority have received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine as of last week, and everyone I have spoken with experienced what they described as mild effects (headache, chills, fever) for a brief period after the second dose. I cannot wait for my second dose.

DH received the Pfizer shot last week and had no issues. I'm really proud of my state so far. Over 27,000 fully vaccinated and over 117,000 first doses, and all received doses are either in someone's arm or allocated to a specific person. My state is usually either dead last or next to it when it comes to positive things, but high vaccination rates is in our wheelhouse. Vaccinations are mandatory at several points during a child's education with no exceptions other than medical reasons, so I guess we just accept vaccines as a part of maintaining public health. We also have a large percentage of the population who are older or have health issues who likely feel that the risks from getting Covid outweigh the fears of long term issues from getting the vaccine. I think I read that my state's goal is to have everyone who wants the vaccine to receive the first does by the end of February. We can probably get that done if the supply chain holds up.
Do you mind me asking what state you are in?

I am in Kentucky. My school district and a neighboring district are scheduling vaccines for next weekend. As I said earlier, I can’t get one yet but my friends can. Someone I worked with in the past in a nearby county got his today. So teacher vaccines are happening. I’m hoping that means my 60 year old husband who is phase 1b will get his very soon.
My sister has had both doses with no adverse effects. She’s a nurse. My niece works in a hospital not with direct patient contact and she got hers yesterday. Her arm hurt pretty bad but that was all.

Given her username I’m guessing she’s from West Virginia, which from all I’ve heard is doing a bang up job of getting shots on arms.

My BIL got the vaccine (he's the chief of medicine for a local hospital). He had a reaction after the second dose. He said he felt "awful" - fever, chills, etc. like he was sick. It lasted about 24hrs and then he felt better.

They are having an issue at his hospital with leftover vaccines. They can't find enough people to give it to, so at the end of the day they have some leftover. He's literally walking around the hospital every day asking people if they want it (if they fall in the eligible group). Unfortunately, they can't "give" the leftover vials to another local hospital, etc. because they are not allowed. Any unused vaccine that can't be salvaged has to be thrown away.

In my state at a couple pharmacies they gave left overs to people who otherwise would not have qualified. Some people went nuts and questioned the governor. He said obviously it’s something they didn’t anticipate and we need to plan better. But I don’t think people realize each of those doses has to be tracked and recorded and as we know it has to be kept cold or used within a certain time. You can’t just send it somewhere random. At least they weren’t wasted but now they need to be sure those people get the second dose.

My employer has sent multiple emails now practically begging people to cancel their vaccine appointments if they know they are not going to make it so they can schedule additional individuals, as they are experiencing a lot of no-shows and are having to find people to give the unused and open doses to.

What the reason for not giving to another local hospital?

I know in my county to bridge the gap between the timing of the next shipment they asked a main hospital system in our metro if they could give some doses and they were able to get some. That hospital system is located in another county but serves the metro as a whole as do other hospital systems.

DD went to nj shoprite yesterday and now feels crappy, tylenol is making her feel better. tired. she said some people cancelled their appts and there is no giving it to someone else.
my 86 year old MIL in arizona lives there alone and can't seem to get a vaccine. she doesn't know how to use the system of course online and just calls her primary dr. who told her to just wait there are no shots available to her. my MIL just wants to go to her dr. and get one, i think she doesn't understand that that isn't something that is done yet.

I'm not sure of the reason, but he said they aren't allowed to give leftover vaccine to another hospital/doctor office, etc. We are in PA, and the vaccine distribution seems to be problematic.

Well darn that's a bummer. I'm all for sticking with a phase as a normal protocol rather than letting chaos occur by just giving it willy nilly (at this point that is) moreso due to tracking of people but I'm sure other people other hospitals would have people eligible to get it so that just seems like an unnecessary barrier.

Just got my first vaccine shot yesterday morning. I had to drive an hour away for a location that I could schedule it at but it was a beautiful day for a pleasant drive. The location where it was administered was staffed by Air Force personnel - I don't know if they were active duty or reserve. I am happy to say the process was well organized, and everyone that I interacted with was pleasant, professional and efficient. We all complain about the government when we feel something is wrong - I'm going to praise them for doing something right. I had zero issues or side effects, and barely noticed when the shot was administered.

Here in TN my county has teachers in phase 1b, but they said late Feb/early March is when they will start...originally they said early Feb but it is slow here...it also may change if TN adopts the recommendations of the WH to open to 65 and older or those with pre-existing conditions right now. Currently pre-existing conditions are 1c here, so hoping they get moved up since my husband is 1c and working at his job onsite. Seems like KY has in general had a better response than TN even early in the pandemic

They told us late feb early March also but the governor said he wanted it done by first of February. I will say the districts have been moving mountains to make it happen. I wish I could give mine to my husband. He works at a college and college kids are a big risk.

I work in a middle school (Michigan) and just received an email yesterday that the school staff in our county will be starting to get theirs next Friday. They are scheduling all Fridays and the plan is to have everyone through their 1st vaccination mid February, 2nd by Spring Break which is the end of March. In the meantime, I am constantly checking our county's website to score an appt. for my mom and dad. Both are in their 80's.

I am in Arizona and had to sign my grandmother up for her shot, the website can be very difficult to navigate if you aren't very computer literate. It requires you to verify your email several times and when it comes time to schedule you have to go through each day to find an available time. A lot of older people are struggling with it and don't understand they can't get it at their doctors.

yes, exactly. everyone in her family is in nj, she is alone in AZ and living in a house alone independently. she is very set on the idea you need a shot you call your dr. and they will book you an appointment, otherwise, since they don't do that (they don't do that anywhere with covid) you just wait until your dr. calls you (which won't happen). After you signed your grandmother up, where is she supposed to get her shot exactly? Because there is no way even if we made her an appt. and achieve that milestone she would get in a car and drive somewhere strange by herself. she drives, but just to the store and back. Also she has no email and doesn't know what a portal is and doesn't use a computer (which is ok if we were doing it here i guess for her).
I think they will need in America to bring the vaccine, when in plentiful supply, to the local senior centers to help with healthy non medical seniors. i do feel bad for all of them.

When I signed my grandmother up they only had two locations available at the time, one in Chandler and one in Gilbert (she's in Scottsdale). She doesn't have an email address either so I used my mom's since she already gets hers from work and doesn't need to log into the portal. This is not very elder friendly, when they are the ones who need it most.
