Have you gotten a COVID vaccine?

Very low risk of transmitting plus there's a very low risk of serious complications if it did happen.
My mom is the only one I have this concern with. She is extremely high risk. Her doctor told her not to leave the house back in February last year. I am not going to be the reason she contracts COVID and ends up on a ventilator or worse.

To give you peace of mind, could she ask her doctor what his/her thoughts are on the safety of it. Knowing how seriously you've taken this virus and clearly they have, I think the risk is really minimal.

And this isn't meant to be snarky or anything, but why did your mom get the vaccine if not to be able to do things like see you again? Otherwise, she would have been safe just continuing to stay home, right? I do understand your worry though - none of us want to be the reason somebody else gets it.

To answer your original question, it really depends on the situation. A huge 150 person wedding? No, not right now. Seeing DH's 90 year old parents for the first time inside and maskless in 14 months? Yes.

To me the vaccine is only one level of protection. I know a lot of people are looking at it as a get out of jail free card but I’m not. I just don’t think we are at the point yet. I hope that we are some day but that day is not today. Plus wearing a mask to visit my mom isn’t that big of a deal to me.

Then I would absolutely do what you're most comfortable with. If starting with in person/indoors and masked is as far as you can go right now, then do that. You'll know when the time is right for you.

I agree that it’s not as free and clear as many would like us to believe. However if you are both vaccinated I’d be taking the risk - or at least sitting outside or masked. At some point you will regret waiting too long. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed so if you are both vaccinated a small risk to sit 6 feet apart seems reasonable to me. I’ve been VERY cautious but we did have my vaccinated parents over 2 weeks ago maskless as we are vaccinated too. And every month that passes I assume we are a little less protected until we get the booster so sooner the better.

But of course you have to do what you feel best.

I AM going to visit her once I am fully vaccinated (4 weeks to go). My question was if others are still masking, distancing etc or not. Not whether I should visit.

To answer your question- we are not masking and we haven't gotten our 2nd shot yet.
We have been getting together with family members unmasked for a few months, the only ones we hadn't seen were dh's parents. Last weekend we saw them for the first time in over a year. They are fully vaccinated and were OK with any risk of being near us outside. It was a wonderful to see them, hug and them and sit and talk to them again.
You have to do what you are comfortable with, and what your mother is OK with any risks. There is no right or wrong.

Those that are seeing family again now that you are vaccinated, are you doing so unmasked & undistanced or are you still masking & distancing?
We are unmasked and undistanced with family. We also had done some visits unmasked with certain family members before we were fully vaccinated, though.

pfizer. Both shots. Ready for Disney World! (Plus all the other recommended precautions!)

I know it will be a while for most of us, but I know there are some front line workers posting here, so you never know.

So let us know when you get the vaccine. I'm patiently waiting for my turn to post my experience here. I'm ready to turn the page.

In 2020, Santa drives a UPS or FedEx truck full of vaccine.

ETA: Per the suggestion from @snappy please let us know which vaccine you got and where you got it. Also add how the process went (how long you waited, etc.).

I would just note that side effects doesn't really affect the building up of antibodies. It's really just the body responding to the belief that it's been invaded. But it's not really good or bad regarding how well the vaccine is working. I understand that antibodies can take a week or so to actually build up.

My question was if others are still masking, distancing etc or not.
We're fully vaccinated - well, my husband and I are (more than 2 weeks post second dose). Oldest son is a week past second dose, youngest gets first dose on Sunday.

MIL (in assisted living) is fully vaccinated. I'd love it if they (the facility) would permit outdoor visits, or indoor distanced and masked. But they're not.

Me, personally, I'm still wearing a mask anywhere I'm around other people and doing my best to keep distance.

We were seeing family masked and distanced. We've sort of graduated to seeing family masked or distanced.

The difficulty is that my partner's late-teens, early-twenties sons are all the "let's get this overwith now" types and can't be made to pull their masks over their noses, when we manage to get them to wear them at all. My partner put her foot down about it pretty strictly for the first ten months, but she's been relaxing on it since she finished getting vaccinated (I'm still a week away from my second dose). None of the kids live with us right now, but they've all been visiting more than they were before. I think she's understandably eager to start having more time with her boys, and in the choose-your-battles vein, it's no longer a battle she chooses.

That's what I'm hearing somewhat; however, if you read any articles about all the side effects they basaically say, "hey if you're feeling sick, got a rash, fever, etc, with this vaccine, that's fabulous! That's wonderful! It means that your body is mounting a great defense to the vaccine and future invaders....and oh, by the way, if you get no symptoms, don't worry, you're fine." I mean I get what the literature is doing--trying to make people feel better about the side effects but when they do that, they make the non-side effect people feel like they aren't mounting a defense.

Oh boy, this stuff sure messes with our heads, doesn’t it? I’m sitting here 18 hours post-vaccination and I can’t even see or feel where the needle went in, and have not had one tiny iota of a side effect. Did they even actual give me any vaccine?!? ;)
