Have you ever witnessed this while eating out.

As a former server here. I did not think twice about it. Maybe if the restaurants did not charge so much for a glass of soda or tea maybe less people would be doing this.

I can't believe the people that would consider this something to be ashamed of, while I was on weight watchers I would do this all the time not because I was cheap but because I was trying to increase my water intake and I can not stand just plain water so I would add the lemon wedges and then put a couple of packs of sweet in low in the water to make it sweeter. I also did this while I was pregnant because the doctor told me to cut my tea consumption because it would deplete my iron. My parents have both kicked the coffee habit and are trying to only drink decaffinated drinks and sometimes the restaurants do not have a diet decaffinated drink so they drink lemon and water, I usually stick to unsweet tea and lemon. Maybe it is a thing of the Southern upbringing. I agree with some of the last post if I order food and I tip what difference does it make what I drink.

THAT!

It's one thing to request 1-2 slices (or wedges) with your water, but to ask for the equivilent of a whole lemon is just not right! That would be like taking your own beer or liquor into a bar, or taking fast food into a table service restaurant. You are intentionally doing something that is keeping the said business from making money.

Some places see things like that and have the beverage or food removed from the table. Some kick people out. It all depends on the establishment.[/QUOTE]

That wouldn't be very smart. They would be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Why would you make someone angry and lose them as a customer over a glass of water and a couple of lemons?

The customer is going to order water either way, the lemons are usually already either on a salad bar or drink station or the waitress brings out more than enough anyway, and sugar packets are on the table. Soooo, the resteraunt is not losing anything by someone adding the already offered lemons and sugar to their water.

Not so much about the lemon but my mom brings her own crystal light packets with her. She can't drink soda because she's diabetic and she can't drink milk because she's allergic. Her only choice is water with her packets.

Some places, especially FL, she brings her own water in too (bottled). One sip of foreign water and she's sicker then a dog for days. I'd rather get a nasty look from a waiter or a patron then see my mom in the hospital again.

I order water and lemon all the time, if it's a fast food place I very often order water then grab some lemon's or lemon packets for my water. If they did not have lemon then I would drink plain water. I do not add sweetner or sugar, but you know it would't bother me if someone else did it.

I wouldn't have a problem with someone adding thier own flavor either. I wouldn't do it in a fancy place but in a sandwich shop no problem.

I order water with lemon all the time. I am cutting down on soda but I get tired of plain water. Is that shameful too? Or is it just the sugar that makes it wrong?

Honestly, I cannot imagine why this would be embarrassing. I don't do it often, but have done it in the past. Most servers will ask if lemon is wanted with a glass of water. What is the difference?

We do this all the time - get lemons & make our own lemonade. Most restaurants ask if we want lemon with our water. - my kids, my mom, I all do this - but we aren't getting just water. I typically dont go into a restaurant just for a drink.

I do this anytime I go out to eat after about 2 pm. I order water with lemon (1) and add one packet of Splenda. If not splenda, no sweetner for me. Sometimes my DD will give me her lemon so the water ends up more lemony. :)

I'd better warn Dan. I'd hate to embarass him.

I do it all the time and I got the idea from my DMIL. This woman could probably buy 1 of the Disney World parks. She doesn't do it to be cheap. She does it because she likes the taste and so do I. The thing that would embarrass me is being with someone who snoops and can't mind their own business.

I see nothing wrong with this. Lots of restaurants serve water with lemon and the sugar is on the table. So you can have your lemon water sweet or not sweet. No big deal.

I do it all the time. You jealous Ive got 80,000 grand saved up in 5 years? Sounds like it. Ill keep laughing to the bank.

No, ordering a glass of water with a couple lemon wedges isn't wrong. Neither is adding a flavoring packet to a glass of water.

But "making your own" lemonade??

I saw a woman at a Panera Bread once that had a glass of water, about 6 sugar packets, and at LEAST a dozen lemon wedges scattered on napkins all over the table. She didn't have anything else, just that. She was trying very hard to squeeze out the lemon juice, would add a packet of sugar here and there, and would stir vigorously. It was very obvious what she was doing.

To be blunt, I thought it was ridiculous. Guess all the other people who may have wanted lemon with their water was out of luck, because there were no more lemon wedges up there when I walked by the drink station. And yes, restaurants would lose money when they have to go through lemons like crazy because someone squeezed a whole lemon meant for 6 people into one glass of water. It might not be much money, but when you're operating a restaurant, you need to penny pinch every which way you can.

For most of the people I know who do this it isn't because they don't like soda or the drink choices of the restaurant - it's because they don't want to PAY for the drinks offered. Many of them also gloat about "sticking it" to the restaurant.

It stinks, because sodas cost the restaurant around .15, and sell them for $2.00 or more, but that's the nature of the industry - businesses are there to make money, not break even and they're not offering a public service. if you don't want to pay for a drink, drink water with a lemon slice and move forward.

Should I mention my mil brings her own softdrink into restaurants all the time. She drinks diet caffeine free coke/pepsi & restuarants don't serve it - so she brings a can from the car. What kills me is she always asks - do you have diet caffeine free & when they say no (cause they always do) she'll go get it out of the car.

I don't get what this has to do with anything :confused3

It appears to be someone egging on the people that have an issue with it.. There always has to be at least one.. I'm surprised there aren't more..:)

I guess I don't see a problem with it. I mean, it's not something I'd see myself doing but...to each his own. Life is too short to care about stuff like this.

You saw 1 woman taking 12 lemon wedges. Did you happen to notice how many people did not take 1 wedge? If the restaurant can't take the loss of 2 or 3 lemons then they won't stay open anyway.
Hopefully, if someone went to the drink station and saw there were no lemons, they had 2 brain cells to rub together and would think to ask a server to please put out more lemons.
