I was eating a pepperoni roll (delicious!) earlier and someone asked me if I knew that they were really only common to WV.

I thought they were crazy!

However, Wikipedia seems to agree with this person...

"The pepperoni roll is a snack popular in West Virginia and some nearby regions of the Appalachian Mountains. Ubiquitous in West Virginia (particularly in convenience stores), but typically little known elsewhere, it is arguably the food most closely associated with the state (a competitor for this distinction is the ramp). Fairmont, West Virginia, claims the title of 'Pepperoni Roll Capital of the World.'[citation needed]

The classic pepperoni roll consists of a fairly soft white yeast bread roll with pepperoni baked in the middle. The pepperoni can take several forms: a single stick; several folded slices; or shredded or ground meat. During baking, spicy oil from the pepperoni suffuses the bread. Most people prefer the rolls to be moist but not soggy; thus, the texture of the bread is an important factor in the rolls' quality.[citation needed] A typical pepperoni roll weighs about three ounces, and can be eaten as a snack or as the main dish of a lunch. Pepperoni rolls can be eaten cold, or can be warmed slightly in an oven or microwave."

I've been eating these things my entire life and usually make them for DH's lunch several times a month.

So... have you heard of them? Where are you from?

We use to have a pizza place that made pepperoni rolls. They were so good! I have been here in Jax all my life.

I'm from the St. Louis area and NOPE, never heard of a pepperoni roll!

I am a vegetarian now, but it sounds like something I would have liked when I wasn't!:)

Mn and NO.

Do you have a recipe you can share? My family would love that, I am sure!

They used to sell them at the Italian Bakery we went to in Michigan - ate them all my life (preferred the no-pepperoni, just cheese version myself!).

To be quick (and what I do for DH's lunch) I use biscuit dough.

I buy the 4-pack of Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits in the tubes (10 biscuits/tube) smooth them flat with my hand, put 3 pieces of pepperoni (sometimes I add cheese and peppers) in the middle and roll them up like a crescent roll. Bake like normal. He takes 1 tube/10 rolls for lunch and it's perfect and cheap!

Traditional, traditional pepperoni rolls I either make bread dough in the breadmaker (white) or use frozen dough balls... same thing. Smoosh the dough with your hands, put the pepperoni in and roll it up and bake.

Yummy!

They are little bits of heaven....spicy bites of cured meat baked into a warm, doughy bread. The ones with cheddar AND pepperoni are exceptionally delicious. ::yes::

I first tried them in Deep Creek Lake, MD, which is not too far from WV.

From Northeast Ohio here. I didn't know it was a West Virginia thing. There is a restaurant here that serves them on the salad bar. It is an Italian restaurant.

They're big here in Western PA/Pittsburgh. A lot of youth groups sell them (along with hoagies) for fundraisers.

Have them on Long Island. It's a basic at the pizza places.

Though here it's called a pinwheel and they have them in pepperoni, vegetables, sausage, and most of the other basic pizza options.

Now I have to make them for dinner. Just called DH, and he is picking up the fixings now. I'm hungry!

When I started this thread, I wanted one SO bad.

However, its DH's birthday and I'm stuck going to Red Lobster.
(I hate seafood, but love my DH.. so away I must go!)
