I first heard of pepperoni rolls when I went to college in Salem, WV. We lived off of these things! I had never heard of them growing up in MD. The ones we had did not have cheese in them, just a small stick of pepperoni stuck in the middle of a very soft roll. Great with mustard.

I was eating a pepperoni roll (delicious!) earlier and someone asked me if I knew that they were really only common to WV.

I thought they were crazy!

However, Wikipedia seems to agree with this person...

"The pepperoni roll is a snack popular in West Virginia and some nearby regions of the Appalachian Mountains. Ubiquitous in West Virginia (particularly in convenience stores), but typically little known elsewhere, it is arguably the food most closely associated with the state (a competitor for this distinction is the ramp). Fairmont, West Virginia, claims the title of 'Pepperoni Roll Capital of the World.'[citation needed]

"Country Club Bakery" is the best place to get them in Fairmont:thumbsup2

The classic pepperoni roll consists of a fairly soft white yeast bread roll with pepperoni baked in the middle. The pepperoni can take several forms: a single stick; several folded slices; or shredded or ground meat. During baking, spicy oil from the pepperoni suffuses the bread. Most people prefer the rolls to be moist but not soggy; thus, the texture of the bread is an important factor in the rolls' quality.[citation needed] A typical pepperoni roll weighs about three ounces, and can be eaten as a snack or as the main dish of a lunch. Pepperoni rolls can be eaten cold, or can be warmed slightly in an oven or microwave."

I've been eating these things my entire life and usually make them for DH's lunch several times a month.

So... have you heard of them? Where are you from?

Oh yes. I'm from SW PA, right on the border of WV so they're very popular here.

Just off the top of my head without looking it up, I think they were invented by Italian immigrants who were working in the coal mines and needed something easy to carry and eat.

::yes::
They are popular here with cheese, sauce, and peppers. (Oliverio's)
I'm not far from you Mushy:wave2:

Mmmmm... Oliverio's...

I'm an hour drive to Clarksburg.... Oliverio's... yuuuummmmy...

I have eaten pepperoni rolls, I am in VA. I have seen them in most Sbarro chains here and in NC but they have cheese in them. There are several Italian restaurants here that have them, also with cheese.

You're only an hour from Clarksburg? I didn't know you were that close.

I hope dinner was fine.

Yep, yep. Hour-ish. Straight shot down 50. It's an hour from here to the VA Hospital which is maybe 10 minutes from the heart of Clarksburg.
I only ever go to the VA hospital though so to me it's "Clarksburg"...:rotfl:

Last time I took DH to the VA hospital, we were going to eat at Oliverio's but a snow storm hit and we had to head home. :sad1:

Red Lobster was good. It was my parent's present to DH. Thank goodness they added another chicken dish- now I have two choices! A maple-cherry glazed chicken breast or Chicken Linguine. I was getting burnt out on Chicken Linguine, so I jumped on the chicken breast!

Was very good. ::yes:: DH is excited to have my leftovers for lunch tomorrow. :lmao:

:rotfl2:

Pretty much.

Everyone got a present here tonight.. I was looking for something when I came across a packaged latex pig (my Shih-Tzu's favorite toy EVER) and he's happily squeaking away. Something about that fresh latex taste/ brand new squeaking noise just excites him greatly.

When I was in college, we had a pizza place across the street from the dorms that made pepperoni rolls. $1 a piece. I used to get sick on them.

of course, i live in Staten Island! :goodvibes

They are all over many pizza places in TX. I've seen them on menus of many other places in several different states.

Anything on Wikipedia should be taken with a grain of salt. It's written just by regular old people and not experts.

I grew up in Dearborn, MI. I can remember eating pepperoni rolls in the late 50s. Bought them from an Italian bakery in Dearborn. Didn't know about the WV link to pepperoni rolls until my son moved to Morgantown in 1995.

Just to clarify a bit. This is the kind of pepperoni roll you'd get in WV or the Appalachian area:

This is the type of roll you'd get in a pizza shop. It's baked like a calzone or stromboli -- not the same thing:

I am totally going out for some pepperoni rolls this weekend. :rotfl2:

I am drooling! I wonder if I can talk my DH into a trip to Oliverio's this weekend. Are there any other decent Italian places besides that?

But, of course. But then I live in Fairmont! Besides Country Club Bakery, there is also Colasessano's, "home of the world-famous pepperoni roll". ;)

The marching band just sold them as a fund raiser as they do every Super Bowl weekend.
