Have You Ever Formally Protested or Boycotted Anything?

Nope never marched or protested and never will. While marching and protesting is everyone's right, what about the rights of the people who get their work or lives interrupted through no fault of their own because they can't get through the protest. Did their right to get to work/home/church/the liquor store not just get violated? Or the innocent people who get hurt because violence erupts in the peaceful march /protest, were their rights not violated? As far as boycotting, there are charities I don't give to but I'm not sure what would constitute an actual boycott. I try not to think my beliefs are any more important or right than the next person's and I certainly don't have the right to force my beliefs on anyone else. But that might be my 70s upbringing in New Mexico coming out.

You can protest (and even march) with out preventing anyone else from living their lives. Most protests I see are confined to public parks or sidewalks where they don't block access to anything. The big ones here are the inflatable rat. You pretty much know if a rat pops up there is a union protest going on. Also the bigger marches I have supported followed the same rules as parades. Do you get upset every time your city has a parade that might block one's ability to drive down that specific street?

I'm currently trying 30 days of being news-free. No newspapaers, no national news, no local news. DD's Elementary school's newsletter is the only "news" allowed but that's only info about fundraisers and after school activities.

I didn't read the whole thread so maybe this was asked but what about the weather? That is the only news I would probably feel uncomfortable missing.

You can and if it works, that is great but it doesn't always work. We had protests here in our small town not too long ago (last week) that actually blocked the entrances to a number of businesses. It wasn't intentional but it grew and before anyone knew it, people were unable to get to a grocery store, restaurant and church. By then the momentum had grown and in the case of the store and restaurant they ended up having to close for the evening. These things don't always go as planned or hoped.

I get my weather news from an app. I have gotten pretty good at looking at a radar image and wind direction map and coming up with as much day to day info as what I get from the tv people.

Watching the news, protests, boycotts, things like that, I was struck that I really have never formally protested anything. Even when the union of which I was a member went on strike, I worked behind the scenes. Have you ever marched for anything? Is this too political of a thread?

I don't do any protesting or marches of any kind. I do personally protest things that go against my beliefs though. I won't buy certain products, shop at certain places or eat at certain restaurants, hotels, etc. I choose not to give my hard earned money to those that crap on me and who I am.

Oh I forgot about Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby! We don't have them here but when we are in the USA we won't go to either of those places. Ick! Who would want to support something homophobic.
Interesting.

I make it a point to shop at Hobby Lobby and to eat at Chick-fil-a.

Who would want to support those companies? Me. And I don't see either company as homophobic. But then again I don't know anyone afraid of homosexuals.

Me neither....and I was once part of a women's group that insisted on shopping at Hobby Lobby for materials for our projects on a regular basis. Eventually, I just quit that group....I got sick of paying dues to fund Hobby Lobby.

LOL, I'm not crafty, but if I do a project, I generally shop at Hobby Lobby because it is a nicer store. Now Chic-fil-A? I drove 2 1/2 hours to eat there! YUM! The families personal belief is just that, personal. They have no anti-gay policies in their business. Are people not allowed a personal opinion anymore? (I know the answer)

I still want to know what Penn did!

I have participated in many Pro Life marches and other activities (Life Chains, etc)

There are no stores, companies, or people I actively boycott. I don't see many movies, watch many TV shows, go to many stores or restaurants because they don't interest me , not because I'm boycotting them.

I cannot count the number of times we've dined at CFA, due to it being one of DD's favorite things. And although we didn't ask them for verification, we have seen same sex parents with kids in there many times. Their kids likely beg to go just the same as all the others, so the parents give in. And these families are treated the same as every other family, and it being CFA, that's about 10 times better than your average fast food restaurant. No difference in attitude or action.

I said DD's two favorite things were CFA and Starbucks, but I should've included Target at #3. So when someone said they boycott Target, I thought, nooooo. Especially when
Target has a Starbucks inside and she can experience two of her three favorite things. Plus, I can abandon her to the Beetlejuice line (but never as bad as a freestanding Starbucks) and start shopping without her.

I wonder if some of the same people boycotting CFA and Hobby Lobby are/we're posting in the other thread to not blame SNL for one of their writer's twitter rants?
Curious?
I don't blame SNL and love the show. We also love Chik-fil-a and served a platter of nuggets at all of our tailgates this year. Their Chikin minis are also a favorite - love the Sister Schubert type rolls. I also use Hobby Lobby for craft things.

The difference between the two was SNL as a entity has taken actions to reprimand the writer for what they said on twitter. In a sharp contrast the owners of Chick Fil A and Hobby Lobby have used the money earned from their establishments to do certain things and lobby for/against certain groups. If it was just 1 single Hobby Lobby store and the corporation as a whole took actions to change what happened at that 1 store it would be very different. Same with Chick Fil A.

The big thing is you can use your profits to do what you want as it is your right and I can chose to not give my money to what makes you profits. In the case of Chick Fil A since it is a franchise environment I did not boycott as it hurts the franchise owner (some of who had no clue the corporation's stances) and the franchise owners do not hold the same opinions as the owner of the bigger Chick Fil A. Now I don't eat Chick-Fil-A often any more but when I did I usually make a donation to HRC and the ACLU as a way to counter act my going to Chick-fil-A. Silly and probably useless but it made me feel better.

I just wanted to let you know that I don't think that's silly or useless.
