July 2003 Wonder (First Cruise) - Booked one CAT 4 and was upgraded at the Port to a CAT 3 :smooth: . Tink dumped a whole bucket of pixie dust on us that day!

We've taken one (so far:p ) and were upgraded.

May '03 3 day-Wonder

Booked a 5 in November '02, received a surprise! upgrade to a 4 in March or April '03. Whenever it was, it was shortly after I paid in full.

When the '05 schedule {finally} comes out and we'll do a 7day - we'll book the 4 right off the bat - because that is what we'll be happy with  ;)

I do agree with alot you have said, except the bias poll. If they open the thread why wouldn't they just click "no"?

The question is whether they open the thread at all. To be fair I don't know for sure that people who've gotten upgrades are participating more often, but it seems likely.

My main point is that if you see that 20% of the respondants say they got an upgrade, you cannot conclude that 20% of people on DCL get an upgrade! The true figure might be much smaller.

We have been on two cruises, upgraded on one of them.

First cruise, booked a cat 10 for the May 2002 western inaugural. Had a room # assigned, didn't get an upgrade but were happy with what we had.

Second cruise, booked a cat 9 (I think) on deck 7 (porthole room). Had a room number assigned (7504). Booked about 50 days ahead of the cruise. About 30 days out, when I checked our booking, we had been upgraded to a cat 5 (7538, verandah). I had specified on my ressie that I wanted deck 7, so we wouldn't have taken an upgrade on a lower deck. Again, we were happy with our room, but would have been happy with the original room as well.

Next cruise is booked for connecting cat 10s on deck 2. I have waitlisted for deck 7. I would absolutely love to move back up to 7, but will be happy to stay where I'm booked.

I've had two cabins per cruise on our last 3 cruises and never had an upgrade. I can always keep our fingers crossed for our January cruise!

How do you get word that you were upgraded? Does DCL contact you directly? Do they contact your travel agent? Do they contact you at all before hand or tell you when you arrive at the ship?

Right before our last cruise we got called and asked if we'd take an 11 instead of a 7 and a rebate for 50% of the cruise price. It was a week cruise and I wanted the verandah so like a dope I declined. I wish I had jumped all over that sucker!

10/5 is my first cruise ever. Booked a cat 8 and upgraded to a cat 5. Booked the cruise under 90 days also. I guess this will spoil me, looking for an upgrade every time!!

4 cruises 0 upgrades.

Should that count as 4 no votes;)

We have been on 5 Disney cruises, never been upgraded.

Been on 2 Princess cruises, not upgraded there either.

First Cruise... just got back!!!

Got upgraded from a Cat.10!!!! Wow, a verandah!!!

As posted earlier, that must have been a whole ship-load of pixiedust! The bahamas froze over that day! LOL!!!

We enjoyed it immensely. And this thread makes me realize even more how very lucky we were......

Recently home from our first of many to come Disney Cruises. (9/11 Wonder) We have fallen in love with cruising. The staff and crew were wonderful. Even enjoyed the Mickey Wake up call even tho we are young AARP'ers.

We booked our Sept cruise in April. I picked out a cabin on Deck 7 - Cat 7. Three weeks before the cruise we got 'the call' from the TA that Disney had upgraded us to a cat 5 on the same deck. It was perfect! It turned out that we had a better view from the other side of the ship. Starboard is the side to go for. I think that we will book that cabin and not hope for a upgrade because they are far and few between. We had book a navigator's veranda and was upgraded to a better one in the middle of the ship. Maybe we were upgraded because there are fewer cat 7 than other catergories.

3 dcl cruises...1 upgrade.

we were surprised with this 'gift'...was not expected. will always book a catagory we will be happy with.

We bought our first DCL cruise on a whim ten days before sailing in 02/00. We booked Cat 9 and when doc's arrived, we were upgraded to Cat 6 - it was awesome!

We are booking again for next spring, but don't have any expectations about an upgrade, plus with three kids tagging along this time, we have to go Cat 4.

3 DCL cruises -- no upgrades
We booked cabins we liked and were happy with what we had.
jan :earsgirl:

Total of 3 cruises for us. 2 - 3 day cruises and 1 - 7 day Western.

Upgraded to Cat 1, Roy Disney suite from Cat 3 one bedroom suite back in 1998 on our first 3 day. Huge cabin for just the 2 of us.

Never did find out why we were upgraded! Our Travel Agent called us a week before sailing and asked if we wanted the upgrade. Of course I said yes. It seemed odd she would call us for something I would think everyone would want. So I asked her about it and she explained she would always automatically accept upgrades for her clients until one client got very upset with her for doing so. Go figure.

Keep in mind that

-- nearly half the cabins are in categories 9-12, so most people who buy there are going to stay there.
-- like all polls on these boards, the results are highly unscientific due to "participation bias". In this case, people who have had upgrades are far more likely to participate than those who haven't.
-- in addition, if the average respondent has sailed on 4 cruises, you need to divide the upgrade percentage by 4 to get an estimate of the odds of receiving an upgrade on a particular cruise.
-- the reason category 11 is heavily promoted and sometimes cheaper than 12 is that there are 147 category 11 cabins but only 13 category 12 cabins. (You probably couldn't get a category 12 cabin if you tried!)
And, just think of it, unless my eyes deceive me, if you book an accessible cabin, your chances of getting upgraded, or even downgraded, to a category 9, 10, or 12 are zero....
Just a thought... ::yes::
