Have you been "right-sized?"

I meant the $14 wage- Palm Beach. I owned a mail order company and paid our employees $14 an hour to part-time high school kids to pack and ship packages. Sold that company in February, the new owner still pays the same.

I want to add I was not trying to be insulting towards her husband and hope it did not come across that way, only pointing out that Walgreens is totally taking advantage of him.

Hey you guys need to learn how to quote!!! Now I'm an RN in FL!

NO!! It isn't you guys, it's the boards!!! I just had the same problem with quoting, but was able to fix it.

Actually I was from Jupiter FL (where I was a medical technologist, just to set the record straight!) and still have friends in that area, who would love a job that paid $20 an hour. Actually, some would want that $14 an hour (and they are college grads!). I was going to ask for the name of the company so I could let them know!

And I agree, that is not a good wage for that long of a commitment to a company and responsibility of the position.

DH's manufacturing company was on overtime most of last year and this spring. He works 6 12 hr days in a 2 week pay period. He was told yesterday that they're being given a "voluntary partial layoff" of 1 out of those 6 until future notice. The "good" news was that they'll be closed Thanksgiving (long) weekend and the week between Xmas-NY for the first time ever...but of course they won't get paid for them :confused3.

Fun, fun....

Terri

Let me tell you about how my old company did mass layoffs- they would send out two emails to two different sets of people to report to a specific room. They would tell the people in "Room A", "you are safe", while the people in "Room B" were getting their severance packages and escorted to clean out their workspace and out of the building. We could not return to our desks until the newly unemployed were out of the building. It was terrible, there were about 5-6 rounds of that.

That's how a company I worked for did it as well. Any time there were large department meetings we'd all be comparing notes about who was scheduled for which conference room to try to figure out who was being laid off and who was safe.

That's terrible pay for a job with such burden & responsibility. Here in Florida, that is about what a high school kid would get paid to do simpleton tasks.

Well she says he has worked there for 30 years so I guess he didn't think so. We are all free to look for other employment if we are not happy with our current pay and work situation.

As for the OP I hope that your husband is not one of the one's being right sized.

I was "right sized" from a major company back in 2005 by phone. I was a work-at-home employee for 5 years after the branch office encouraged their employees to work from home to save on operating expenses, but had recently gone through a manager change when our department "moved". My former manager had worked at the office with me, but my new manager worked in Tampa, Fl. I never actually met him before I got laid off.

I had taken a long weekend off for the 4th of July, so I came back on Tuesday instead of Wednesday. I logged on to my computer, and got an IM from a coworker saying "Are you safe??" I was just replying back, asking what the heck he was talking about, when my manager called and told me I was being let go. In order to get my severence package, I had to try to find another job within the company that used my skill set - which I couldn't find, of course. And the annoying thing was, I had coworkers calling me up at home for at least a month to ask me to help them either find something I had done, or figure out some problem they were having. (I was courteous enough to write up a VERY detailed note on the whereabouts of everything on my computer - if they couldn't find it, tough luck!!)

You know, that is a lot easier said than done in some cities and states. We are lucky, there seems to always be some type of job available in the town where we live, it just seems nobody wants to look or feels it's beneath them. I have been surprised at how many jobs are available in just the last few days since I have been helping my DH start his job hunt, should his employer eliminate his position. I just found a new listing for one doing the same thing he is doing now and called to tell him about it, so he could jump on it.

Someone being in the military is no longer even guaranteed a job. I am part of a group of Army wives and a couple of their husbands have been kicked out because they tested positive for drugs.

My DH is in the Army and he will be the first to tell you that the downsizing they are doing is necessary. They are forcing people out who aren’t meeting Army standards on things like height and weight, failing drug test, and those with poor job performance. The past years the Army has become less then competitive and now only the best will be promoted and move on which is a good thing. A few years ago guys in my husband’s year group were pretty much guaranteed making Major this past list with the cut backs there were many guys not on there for various good reasons. According to my husband they are basically cleaning house and getting rid of the bottom feeders. Why should a subpar solider or officer who is not doing their job be allowed to sit around and collect a salary and benefits on the tax payers dime.

Oh and good luck to your husband I hope he does not lose his job.

Thank you for your dedication and your husband for his service. :thumbsup2
I have to say, with my son considering a military career, and my dad who served for 20 years,
I would not want to entrust their lives to men who are doing drugs. :confused3
I want the person who has my son's back, who has your husband's back,
or any of our soldier's back, to be clean and sober and have a history of making wise choices and decisions.

You can get fired in the private sector from manufacturing jobs for testing positive for drugs.
To me this is a completely different issue from being "right-sized".
This is an issue that speaks to following the law, preventing workplace accidents, and much more.

Oh, I agree with you, I do think they need to trim the Military service down, but I'm not sure they need to trim it down as much as they have planned, unless that many soldiers are unfit, and I don't think all of them are. But there was still a day when someone could turn to the military if they couldn't find work other ways, that isn't so easy these days. My husband is supposed to sign his reenlistment contract next month, he has done all the stuff he was supposed to, so we are waiting on his unit to get in gear. They could use to trim some from his unit (he is a Reservist)

Thank you, it's his civilian job that's on the line, just in the waiting game now.

down sized, right sized, reduction in force...its all the same..what a tragic Joke! Like another term makes it easier...how insulting....
OUT of a Job and OUT of money for hardworking people....sad
Best of Luck to all that are Actively Looking...

Well to add insult to injury, my husband's company announced their closure on the local news tonight, but they haven't even given all the details to the employees yet, I think that's terrible.

Looks like the firings are back. My neighbors wife is living day to day. Back in June they started to let a few people off here & there right before their trip to the world. To late to cancel so they went but cut back alot. No adult drinks, deserts, souvenirs (they got lots from other trips) and special events. They just made sure the kids had some fun. Shes still working but her company is still dropping folks here and there so to say the least her nerves are shot. Theyre only spending on the basics now, no frills. So hard on their nerves & since they quit spending (no dinners out since they got back etc.) it isnt helping the economy. Multiply them by how many others and add the fiscal cliff at the end of the yr im afraid of what next yr might bring.
