Have we reached the saturation point?

I can only comment on the experience I have with the charity we have run Marathon Weekend with for the past 7 years with, 2018 will be year #8~
I don't know how Team In Training is organized, but with the charity we are involved with, many of the families who the charity benefits participate in the week/weekend activities. Many of these families deal with illness, disabilities, etc. This weekend is the highlight of their year. Years ago, runDisney was very generous and flexible providing support to the charities in way of discounts, arrangements, accommodations, etc. Each year, runDisney has offered less and less by way of this support offered. Part of me thinks ok, prices of everything have gone up, so I guess the prices of everything race related will too. Part of me thinks they offer less and less because they just don't have to anymore. This race weekend in particular is popular, so no need to offer it. I've been told that because of this, less families are participating. They simply can't afford the increases (particularly resort rooms even at a group rate) and they need the accommodations such as access for the disabled for certain logistics. These families already have the burden of high costs throughout the year. So I know runDisney is not a charity in itself, but I think what makes Marathon Weekend so special is the spirit of MANY coming together and sharing in an amazing energy. The charities have long been a part of this. It's a shame that there may be less groups involved going forward due to that.

I think our charity has a great program set up for Marathon Weekend~ reasonable registration rates, very reasonable fundraising minimums, hotel discounts (although not what it used to be, lol), included dinners and race morning support tent with food, etc. An opportunity for two free nights at the resort where they have a block of rooms with a certain amount of funds raised, and once you pay your initial registration, your registration fee is waived for the following year with the minimum raised. (With the exception of Dopey, they still request a *small* registration fee for that...) My DS has run Dopey and Goofy for the past several years with little to no registration fees.
I'm not promoting the charity lol (but if anyone is interested, they can PM me.... shameless plug :flower3:) But even with all that goodness, yes, they are still having trouble recruiting at times. Saturation? or is it becoming unattainable? I think all the charities may be experiencing some of this...

I love the supportive energy of the runners on the runDisney race courses! I have to say, they only time it totally did not have that vibe was in the 2015 Wine and Dine back few corrals. By the time everyone was cleared to go back to the corrals from being evacuated out of the corrals due to severe weather, it was a free-for-all back there. There were a lot of runners who just jumped into corrals wherever with no one checking. So when we started, even I (a slow runner) was frustrated with the sea of people that I couldn't get around. There were a lot of really angry, short tempered people shouting at each other, shoving and pushing. A lot of people were vocal about their disappointment in an angry way. I thought a fist fight was going to break out in DHS. I know it all sounds dramatic, haha, but really.... it was crazy. I was just so sad about it. I realize it's an anomaly but I was hoping that we could all make the best of it and have fun despite the situation..... just like MANY did this past January with the 1/2 being cancelled and running all over property, people coming together, having fun, encouraging each other, cheering each other on. That was the BEST!! :cheer2:

I decided to fundraise for a charity for 2018 and I wish I'd done it for years and races prior.

My fundraising minimum for Dopey is not cheap, but after hearing what friends do ... it just makes perfect sense. For example - a friend makes a donation to her fundraising effort for the amount of her race registration and gets a full tax write-off since it's a donation.

I think that's awesome! A win-win all around! :flower3:

I'm actually pretty excited about it. I spent most of today talking to various friends about different events and things I can do to meet (and hopefully exceed!) my fundraising minimum. It's definitely something fun to take my mind off training and other things going on, so that's awesome.

While I suspect they aren't all that interested in what the peanut gallery thinks maybe diminishing numbers will push them towards looking at what the runDisney community is saying and take some action. I'd encourage everyone to write, email, or call them to let them know your feelings:

A friend who has run many rD races over the years told me why she stopped, and it was for a reason that I found silly but may not be. The medals. She has a ton of different medals from races all over the country. Her point - the rD medals are cool, but once you run the race, you have the medal, and next year's medal looks exactly the same so no reason (for her) to run it again. She races for the bling, and rD bling is cool, but how many Mickey medals that look essentially the same does one need? After taking a few years off from marathon weekend, she ran the Dopey this year. Why? The new 5k and half medals, and for her first Dopey medal.

Looks like rD is trying to cash in on the "medals for sale" theme with the Virtual Shorts series. Maybe if they changed the medals more significantly from year to year they could create more interest.

I'll admit to being disinterested in all of the medals that were "repeats" from previous years in this year's Dopey, being far more interested in the ones that were new to me (it was my first Dopey) - and I am not a "bling" person. These are casual runners for the most part. Give them another reason to get excited about this year's race - the new bling!

Makes sense & I can see it & RunDisney must have too with them coming up with new medal designs for each race now. Yeah the virtuals are a cash grab for bling, but we are suckers and we'll sign up again. They are really neat collectables we think and a fun addition to summer.

I love the bling & love using my compass from Everest Challenge, well not really, but that one was pretty cool & unique, but yeah I think each year was the same thing. What's funny is how big my Wine & Dine medals are from 2016, they 'dwarf' poor Dopey from 2016.

The full marathon medal did have like a three year run where the medals did look very similar,2014-2016,I believe!!I'm not a huge bling person but with the price of the races I don't think unique medals every year is asking for too much.I was happy with the 2017 full medal, nice retro look and feel. One race that I think could get a pass because the medal was so darn cool was the ToT 10 miler medal,I got the 2013 and 2014 ones and they're essentially the same medal with different ribbons,I'm not saying they should have the same medal 5 years in a row as previous ToTs also had pretty much the same design but I'm sure new runners seeing the medal looking just like the tower and an elevator with a spring that goes up and down got those new runners to sign up,along with the idea of an after race party, which was never that big a deal but just putting the words "party after the race" was enough to bring them in.

This really has been an ongoing thing but with today's wine and dine registration I thought it would be a nice discussion to have.

Princess is sold out completely last I checked.

Dark side is still open and everything after that is as well.

Just the half marathon for wine and dine is $199 before active fees.

So the question is. Have we reached saturation point with runDisney? Are prices the issue? Have quality of races decreased? Is it something else?

What could runDisney do to improve their races? Can they reverse this trend?
All I can say with so little actual data is that they haven't reached a saturation point FOR US! :)

I just did a RnR Half in New Orleans last weekend and had a good time. But my sister and I kept commenting on how it "just wasn't like Disney" in some important ways to us. I'd do another one, but I still prefer the Disney races.

I guess we'll see over time...
