Have things ever ruined your vacation?

I think the only mishap that I've had is someone was on the wave at Typhoon Lagoon and landed on me and knocked me down in the pool:( We were actually leaving that day and I had a huge black/blue on my head from the person hitting me (that didn't show up until the next day, but I looked pretty funny getting on the plane with an ice pack on my head!). Still didn't ruin my vacation though. It wasn't that person's fault, its hard to see anyone in the "wave".

I got food poisening on the first night there so it ruined the next couple days!! :(

One trip my DD was three at the time and she developed a fever the first night and was sick the entire trip, I could barely get her out of the stroller of course the day we leave she felt better...
Then another trip my mother came along and she has always been in great shape but couldnt take the heat and had migraines almost the whole trip..
Then we went with another family, I planned this trip for 8 months and had all kinds of resturanst and things planned to do and when we got there they complained so much about the prices of the counter service meals I didnt dare bring up the table service places I wanted to try, plus they wanted to sleep late all the time while we are a get up and go family, also they always wanted to go back to the resort and go swimming every time we had to stand in a line and we used FP alot!!

Well, on our last trip to WDW we were on the train an extra 7 hours, our camera was stolen on the first day in FL, I wasn't able to sleep well at the resort due to screaming banchi children on either side, and it was either very hot or raining...but we had a fantastic time. I wasn't going to let anything ruin our vacation. :) We actually had quite a bid of PD at MGM because somehow we sat in the 2nd or 3rd row of every show we went to. We would split up to find seats & people offered to move over to make room for my DH & DD to sit with us.

The only trip where I let problems get me down was when I planned a nice get away weekend for DH's birthday and I came down with a tummy virus the next morning. We ended up having to leave & go home.

Receiving my son's college tuition bill 2 days before I'm suppose to leave for Disney. All I keep thinking is "boy, I could use this vacation money towards his college". Well the trip is coming up. Hope it won't be ruined.

Right before an April vacation trip a few years ago I fell at school and severely injured my hip. Walking was extremely painful :( Every picture from our trip that year shows me grimacing. I didn't make a big deal out of it to my kids at the time, but that wasn't a fun trip for me.

During our Sept/Oct trip last year...Jeanne blew through the day after we drove in (not the end of the world and we could use the rest actually, but it was scary) then DD had a stomach ache the entire trip - thank God for childrens Immodium that WDW stocks). And, we had a total mess-up on our room at POFQ - had a split ressie and were told we could keep same room - then were told that was incorrect - moved - construction next to new room - plus really, really loud neighbors, etc - moved back to original room 5 days later - trip was redeemed!

All in all that trip was the best "family" vacation we ever had, believe it or not. We had alot of fun!

Alas, not so in Jan '05 trip - worst trip ever - stayed at POR (manors) - exceptional room, weather terrific, etc. stb xH made life miserable for 9 straight days. Honestly, should have been the best trip ever - turned into a complete nightmare. (can't wait for this divorce to be finalized! :teeth: )

So, things can be great and your companions can wreck them or things can be horrible and your companions can make it great. The moral here is choose your compnaions wisely!

Happy Sunday all! :sunny: :sunny:

Hmmm, let's see. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 days before our first Disney Cruise. We went because my twins would be celebrating their 6th birthday on the ship and I didn't want to disappoint them. It was a great trip anyway. :boat:

So now, short of the ship sinking or the hotel exploding, nothing will ever ruin my trips - I cherish every minute of each one! :wizard:

It seems from your post you have a wonderful way of looking at life. What a beautiful thing. I am glad you are doing better.

The worst thing that has ever happened to ruin one of our Disney trips was before our Honeymoon. Disney forgot to send us our airline tickets and other necesseties. We didnt receive them until the day before our trip, which happened to be our wedding day.

Last year we were scheduled to arrive for our second trip, on the same day that Hurricane Charlie hit. We rescheduled to the next day. When I called the airline to change our tickets they said they werent sure that the airport would be open due to the hurricane, but they also said they would not change the tickets for free. Because it wasnt their policy to change tickets unless the airports were closed for sure. (Like we have any control over a hurricane). In any event they charged us an additional 275.00 per ticket. The tickets were originally 350.00 each. They ended up costing us over 1200.00 for the two tickets. That ticked me off. But we went and had a great time.

Last year I had a very bad case of PMS! Looking back I was a real b---- at times. I now feel sorry for my DH and 2 DD for dealing with my wrath!
This getting older does stink at times. I can't wait for this stage of life to be over. :earseek:

I do feel sorry for my DH this year as my 2 DD now have "it" :bitelip: . I hope we don't get at once while at WDW! :rotfl2:

The only really bad trip we had was 9/11. We were one of the last planes to land in MCO and found out what had happened. Since we just flew in from NY, all we wanted to do was go home but obviously we couldn't. My parents were coming down on another flight about 1/2 hour after us so we were worried about them. We had our DS, who was 2 at the time (and the only child on our flight) and I remember hearing on CNN about 1 of the flights had a 2-3yr old on it. DH's brother worked for Cantor Fitzgerald but left for a new job a few weeks before but DH forgot about the new job so he was panicking.

As I checked in at AKL, I'm crying and just wanted to get a room, the CM hands me a tissue, tells me "I know how you feel" and happily adds...."Would you like to purchase tickets now?" I just looked at her and calmly told her No. When we're all checked in she adds the "Have a Magical Day!"

Same trip, we got hit with the effects of a Hurricane. We were pretty much the only people in Epcot that day.

After that trip, we've learned that we have to let go of the disappointments.

My first trip to WDW was in August and the heat was just unbearable. Couple that with standing in long lines (this was pre-fastpass days), and it was an awful trip. I told my dh that if I ever said I wanted to go back to WDW to get my head examined!

10 years later (and 2 more children), we went back. Everyone else had a fun time, but my baby wanted to nurse CONSTANTLY during the trip. I must have nursed at every bench and restaurant at WDW. It wasn't the nursing that bugged me, but it was that he wanted to nurse all the time. Probably about every 45 minutes all week...well, it seemed that often. Also, we didn't stay onsite and we felt it was too inconvenient to go back to our hotel. You learn quickly that staying onsite with small children is a must!!

Our last trip was the best vacation ever!!! And we all got sick, but it didn't matter. It was just a great trip.

The wife of one of my best friends passed away suddenly while we were at WDW. It completely changed my entire vacation. All I could think of was what he must be going through.

I have a few "almosts"...

On our Honeymoon, DH and I didn't know there was some sort of race near the airport (Midway in Chicago) and the traffic was crazy - we very nearly missed our flight.

On our 3rd anniversary trip, DH left something in the car back at the hotel and took the hotel shuttle back to get it - we had at least 90 minutes before the flight (this time back to the normal Minneapolis/St Paul). WELL, the shuttle ended up taking a ton of people to the Mall of America on the way to and from the hotel so I was left at the airport panicking. The wonderful gate attendant actually held the plane for a few minutes when DH arrived and I ran across the airport to meet him and make it on time. (I thought they never did this, but this was pre 9/11). Needless to say, DH makes us check in and be at the gate at least 60 minutes before takeoff now ;) .

On our last trip, DS was a raging, snotty, nasty spoiled brat the night we got there and I knew if he didn't lose the attitude the trip would not be pleasant. Fortunately he did and we made it to dinner and then had our best trip ever.

But definitely my worst experience was in 2002. DH and I had a trip planned for our 5th anniversary and had booked a 2 (or 3, can't remember) br villa at Sheraton Vistana through our Interval timeshare. My mom and dad were going to watch our DS (who would be 1 at the time of trip) while we were gone. We couldn't wait! And then, when we ended up getting incredible airfare, my mom and dad decided they would come with and we would split watching DS. DH and I were beside ourselves - my parents are magnificent people and DH says how lucky he was to get great in laws (I, however, was not as lucky with my inlaws :teeth: ). Showing my mom and dad WDW in 2002 was something we looked forward to - I had been there with my family in the early/mid 80's but they hadn't been back since.

Then everything changed at the end of July when my mom (my very best friend for my whole life) was killed in an accident. The trip was less than 2 1/2 months afterwards and with only DH, DS and me it was not what we had planned. We were still very much in mourning and it could have been horrible. Instead, we had a wonderful respite from the sadness while we watched our little baby boy take in everything there was to see at WDW. He wasn't old enough to "get it", but he was fascinated by the magic. And although it may sound strange to anyone who doesn't love WDW the way we do, the trip really helped us.

And every trip since has been wonderful - especially since we joined DVC and started staying on site...!

We've had some bumps along the way, but nothing that completely ruined a trip. The worst was the year hubby bought his new (used but new to him) car. Still had temporary tags on it. We parked on the lowest level of the garage deck at Universal and the people next to us, pulled in. Their child was so excited he kicked his door open and left a 3 inch deep dent in our car. They had rental insurance on their vehicle and we exchanged info., etc. but it didn't get us in the best mood and the little boy stood and cried. We did go to US (since we saw the other family head to IOA) and tried to have a good time. We stopped at a restaurant next to our off-site hotel for supper. After the door ding, hubby parked at the back of the restaurant. While we were eating, our car was broken into! We spent several hours the next morning completing police reports, calling insurance companies, etc. It wasn't fun at all, but taught us one thing--stay on-site at Disney!

We have had illnesses, but we've been fortunate that they have been minor colds, sinus allergy issues. Hubby did pick up pink eye from Disney that required a Dr. visit when we got home once.

I went to Disney for my honeymoon. At the wedding reception a fight broke out from drunk family members and wedding cake was everywhere, beer on my dress, etc
Anyway, the whole trip I cried and cried. Every time we tried to go to the parks I had to run to the bathroom and have diarhhea from upset stomach!
I knew where every bathroom was in the land! My poor husband spent the whole time just waiting for me outside restrooms!
Not exactly the image one would want their new husband to have of them!!

This trip (just returned), it rained every day, but did not spoil a thing except on Thurs - our water park day - got to BB early, enjoyed Tykes Peak and Wave Pool while other in our group of 13 went to summit plummet, turned out they waited for the lift for 90 minutes! when they stopped by to check on us, it was lunch time, so we headed to eat - a big thunderstorm came (around 12:30 on the 23rd of June) - park temp closed, but we were eating under a pavilion, so no matter....2 hours later, still sitting under the paviliion, park still temp closed, dangerous lightening all around and no sign of letting up - finally made a run for our stuff which was soaked and part of our party had to leave for Hoop De Doo reservations, the rest of us tried to wait it out (my brother and family had paid full price for tickets for the day, since they did not get the plus option - $130, plus had purchased the $10 refull mugs (two of them), and bought the kids each water shoes....I felt bad for them, they had only gotten on the summit plummet...so, just checking, my brother returned the shoes and got full refund, and BB did not refund his tickets, BUT gave him 4 non-expiring tickets for a future visit to DW - very nice of them for they cant control the weather, and I felt better for my brothers family, as they only came because we were....they were tied to our stars and stripes tickets so we werent out anything -bottom line - had a great time anyway, a memorable experience and great pictures!

Wendy, that brings new meaning to "seeing Pooh at Disney"........

I found out I was pregnant one week before our much anticipated 2 week stay at Disney in 2002. We'd planned and saved and counted down for close to 2 years for this trip and had even upgraded to the Wilderness Lodge in honor of my birthday. We were very excited about the pregnancy and had a ball on vacation, even though morning sickness (all day long) did its best to dampen my mood. There's nothing like heading out bright and early for a boat ride to the Magic Kingdom when you're so nauseous you can barely move. :crazy2:

Just 2 little bumps, still had a great time:

1) September 22-29, 2001 - was laid off from a dot-com consulting firm on July 31 - still took the trip - was offered a job on Wall St (! I live near Philadelphia) during my trip, had to decide before October 1. Didn't take the job, but found another better one.

2) November 2003 - double-ear infection almost ruined trip, but was able to get enough meds to make things bearable, thanks to the staff at the WL.
