Have any vow renewal brides worn coloured dresses? Help me decide!

So we're doing our 10 year vow renewal next year on board the Disney Dream :good vibes

My pj is here

A little background about me - I married young at 21 but things didn't work out and I was single again by the time I was 24.

I met me wonderful hubby not long after separating from my first marriage and we married on my 30th birthday.

So I've been married twice and I've worn a gorgeous white dress on both occasions so I was thinking this time I'd do it differently and forgo the big white dress or even a little white dress and wear some colour.

But I'm nervous - all the amazing photos you see of Disney brides, even vow renewal brides are in stunning white dresses, I'm wondering if I will regret my decision to be different and wear a coloured dress.

Here is my potential outfit

The Headpiece

You have to use your imagination here - the lady that makes the minnie fascinator is going to attach a birdcage veil to it in the same style as the other second photo - so you have to imagine the minnie piece where her white round circle is.

I've decided not to go with the bright red hair though!

Now I'm not trying to be Minnie Mouse - its a vow renewal not a costume party but I love the 50s style, I love Minnie Mouse and I absolutely love red polka dots! So I kind of thought why not!

Now I could go for a white 50s style dress and I could wear the birdcage veil minus the minnie and that would be fitting for a vow renewal and still gorgeous but I wonder if I do that I am missing out on the chance to be a little different!

I'd love your opinions please :)

I think no matter what, you'll always have guests that will think to themselves, without telling you (or maybe even rudely telling you!), "Why would you go through the effort of having a vow renewal if you're going to just wear something silly!" (i.e. red and polka dots) There will always be people who have this standard in their head about what a wedding is supposed to be, and what it's supposed to look like.

Weddings have changed dramatically over history--and especially in the past 20 years. For example, vow renewals in general--this is pretty new. You didn't see vow renewals in the 1950's (to my knowledge)--because once you got hitched, you got hitched. There was never any reason to spend the money again on a ceremony to re-do what you had already done.

You're aware that "standard" wedding dresses have changed over time too--including what colors are "okay" to wear. People get married in different colored dresses all the time--it's no longer just a "white" thing. Blue and blush are REALLY popular. So--I'd say if you want to wear red and white polka dots, and it makes you feel happy and comfortable--you totally should.

And really, you SHOULD if that is what you WANT to wear. And your phrasing of essentially, "Do you think I would regret wearing x..." is really not our call. It's YOUR call on whether or not you think you'd regret it. You could have all of us chime in and say "Do it!"--but you're the one that will look back on the pictures in ten years and think to yourself whether or not you'll ACTUALLY regret it.

So...I think that's really your decision. I think, for a vow renewal, it's a fun idea. I, personally, wouldn't do it because of my personal vision of what a wedding is and what it should look like. Does that mean that I don't think you shouldn't? No. A wedding/vow renewal is highly subjective and meaningful to you. I think you should do what you think would be meaningful to you--regardless of what we at the Disboards, or your guests feel.

This was a conclusion I had to come to myself with what I plan on doing at my own wedding this December. I have a sister that is pretty opinionated...and I just realized that there are things I'm doing at my wedding that she won't like and won't think are "proper." They're things that *I* will like though--and that's really all that matters!

Follow your intuition! Do what makes you happy! I think it'll be fun! :)

And, by the way, *I* just wanted to make clear that I don't think the red polka dot idea is silly. I really don't. I think it sounds adorable. I meant it in that you will have people who will think it's silly because it doesn't meet their preconception of what a wedding dress should be.

I say it's your day and you should do what makes you happy. I wore an ivory dress for mine (I wore ivory when I married as well, I am extremely fair and white makes me look like a ghost) but I did toy around with wearing an evening gown in either red or gold. In the end I changed my mind (I decided on a princess theme and the gown fit in better). But vow renewals are really anything goes. I went to one at Disney where they wore tropical attire for example. And I think that dress would be fun, especially for a cruise event.

I didn't think that all Tiffany and really appreciate your post and opinions. It is only going to be us, our kids and our closes friends so Im not concerned with what other people think - my comment about regretting it, is because I will have missed out on the chance to wear a wedding dress around the ship and on castaway cay. But at the same time Im flying from the UK so its a lot to transport and it will be August and so hot.

You're right and it reflects my personality I should just go with it and stop wonder gin about long trains and veils lol!

If you're in the UK, have you looked at vivien of holloway? Her 50's dresses are amazing :D I have one very similar to that one in your post.

I think you need to do what makes you happy though, if you will feel happy in that dress then do it!

Thanks Robyn I love her dresses too :)

I just realised that I didn't answer your original question.... I'm renewing in a yellow dress so yes, I'm breaking from the normal white dress :)

I'd love to see it Robyn - do you have a pj?

My idea has changed a little and I am now thinking of wearing a white 1950s dress but with a bright red petticoat and sash instead but with the Minni birdcage veil.

It's not a vow renewal, but I wore a pink dress to my wedding. Clearly I think you should wear whatever you want!

I love your ideas and think you should ABSOLUTELY wear what you want! You did the traditional white dress, so if you want to step out and do something different I say go for it. I'm also a big fan of the retro 50's style so you had me from the get go! Either polka dots or the white dress with the red petticoat would look amazing, plus I'm jealous because you have some amazing retro designers in the UK. Good luck girl!

Ah no I don't have a PJ though I have a pre trip report that I talk about the plans in :) here it is

My husband and I are talking about doing a vow renewal in 2017 for our 20th. I'm really leaning toward a fun, flirty 50's/60's tea-length dress. Something down to right above my ankles, lace overlay, cap-sleeves and a keyhole back. Even if I have to have it custom made. And of course with a bird cage for the ceremony and a sparkly rhinestone headband/sash for the party after.

Do what you want, but if it were me wanting to add color, you might think about a red and white polka dot sash instead and keep the Minnie headpiece. That way it's subtle.

I love both dresses but if you're going to have a more relaxed party then go for the first one. The one in beige is more formal.

I would go for whatever you fancy. I really like 1950's dresses and I'm sure you will look gorgeous. Vow renewals seem really popular now. I don't personally understand their popularity. I've been married 17 years and wouldn't consider a vow renewal but it is obviously special for a lot of couples. Wishing you well with your plans and hope you have a special day!
