This ride went from my most feared (at age 6) to most loved ride. I have memories of riding it with my 11 year old brother, and my mom and dad in the buggy in front of us.
You have to realize, my mom was the type of person who, I feel, was never a child...she was always the 'adult' and always said things like. "I'm your parent, not your friend." and was just not a 'child-like' person - EXCEPT AT WDW! There - I got to see a different side of my mother, and now that she is gone - I'll never forget this experience I had on this ride.
ok, so imagine this...I'm 6, sitting with my prankster brother, kinda nervous about riding this. I know, my brother will try to scare me or do something to me, because... I'm the little sister, it's just what is done! So, I close my eyes for part of it, and my brother keeps trying to get me to open my eyes... so I do... and I'm liking it! I'm not scared! wow! It's fun! this was very important part of my memories, because I was a scaredy-cat kid!
Then... a floaty 'ghost' appears, and lands between my brother and I. We both look at each other, and at the 'ghost', and get at far away from it as possible, clinging to the walls of the doombuggy. We enjoyed the ride, but never touched the 'ghost'. At a certain point, the doombuggy tilts backwards, and I hear, from my mother in front, sounds of distress, and then laughter!
Years go by, and I never asked about the little 'ghost'...then I was talking to my Mom when I was planning my (WDW) honeymoon, and I got the full scoop.
My mother, either by accident or on purpose, (I think she was showing her childish side and did it on purpose...bad MOM!) flung a tissue. It landed between us...that was the 'ghost' we saw float down.
When the ride tilted backwards, she cried out because she thought she broke the ride, by throwing the tissue...so she was scared till the ride went back upright, and then laughed about it...
every time I got to WDW...I remember my first time riding HM, and my Mom's little practical joke...
I'm gonna miss it this time!!
