Are the differences in Haunted Mansion between DLR and WDW subtle or quite different? How about Pirates? As I understand it Pirates is quite different and the DLR version is much much better.

Pirates it wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better at DL!!! HM seemed about the same to me. I've only been to WDW once and only rode each once, but I definitely remember Pirates being a bit of a disappointment at WDW.

It's a small world is different as well. I've never been to DisneyLand but I do believe IASW goes outside there

Pirates is not as long or as good at WDW (except for the queue which is better). HM is actually slightly better in my opinion and has a better queue. HM has the conservatory scene with the organ player (he is in the attic at DL) and the library with the rotating busts is part of the ride, not the queue area. The changing portraits are also seen on-ride instead of the queue. Once past the stretching room at WDW boarding is almost immediate as opposed the the much longer hallway at DL. I have actually only ridden Haunted Mansion Holiday at DL so my memory might be a little off.

IASW at DL loads and unloads outside, and the facade is much larger and grandiose than the one at WDW which is inside the covered loading area. The perfect SoCal weather will do that! Otherwise I don't think there is much of a difference in the ride itself, except they do a Christmas overlay at DL.

WDW's IASW now has the flatscreens at the end of the ride where guests, who are wearing MBs, are bid "goodbye" by name.

I believe part of the big HM refurb a few years back was to make it more like the one at DL (added the upside-down stairs, replaced the scarier one with the current Constance and changed the contents of the attic), but having never been to DL, I can't say for sure.

Here's the rundown

better at wdw
splash
dumbo
haunted mansion (better queue and "feel" to the building)
tower of terror

better at dl
space
pirates

several fantasyland attractions go outside, I believe Pooh is outside for loading. Also dl has many, many more rides than magic kingdom. If you consider that Cali Adventure is about where Discovery Island is at wdw you could compare Magic Kingdom to DL + Cali Adventure and that would put magic kingdom to shame.

That being said WDW is better because it's got 4 parks, 2 waterparks, and a helluva lotta hotels and restaurants.

The biggest differences you will notice:

Pirates at WDW does not have all of the 'intro' stuff, such as the caverns, skeleton scenes (except for the skeleton steering the ship in the lightning) or the number of drops as at DL. There is also no 'outdoor' portion (where the Blue Bayou is at DL). But the WDW queue is really cool, going down into the 'dungeons'.

HM at WDW has a different exterior, and a fun interactive queue. There is also an 'interactive' portion at the end where the 'ghosts follow you home' that you do not get at DL (they can't implement it because they don't have the physical room for the projectors). You will notice other minor differences, but these are the big ones.

IASW at Disneyland has a beautiful exterior, with the clock 'show' every 15 minutes. They have also integrated Disney characters into the ride in a lovely way (mostly non-intrusive, with the exception of Ariel). Taking the characters and exterior out, the rides are otherwise similar.

One thing you will notice at WDW is that Jungle Cruise is much longer and more elaborate. It used to be this way at DL, but half of the ride was taken out to build Indiana Jones. WDW also still has the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse and original Tom Sawyer's Island (with the forts and guns that 'shoot') Peoplemover, Carousel of Progress and Country Bear Jamboree. DL has Snow White and Mr. Toad, which no longer exists at WDW. Buzz Lightyear is much better at DL, because you can take the guns out of the holster and actually see your 'beam' as you shoot. Space Mountain is a personal thing, but many people like it better at DL, because of the side-by-side seating and musical soundtrack. Autopia/Tomorrowland Speedway is much more themed and fun at DL, as is the railroad (the Primeval World segment isn't at WDW). BTMRR has a better queue and ride at WDW, but they're missing the fabulous 'dynamite explosion' sequence you get at the end of the DL ride.

Those are off the top of my head, I know there are other comparisons!

It's a Small World at Disney Land is so different because it is the original ride from the NY World's Fair. When they built Disney World, I guess they decided to not make the outside as ornate as the original one. I remember going on the ride at the World's Fair.

I thought I heard Splash was better at DL. Or maybe just different.

If I remember correctly, I like Splash better at WDW. The toboggans go through the ride slower and are two seats per row instead of one. I enjoy the slower pace in parts. I think IASW is longer at DLR than WDW also.

Many of the differences are due to the space constraints found in DL, or relative lack of constraints in WDW. HM for instance in DL requires you to travel under the berm to the show building whereas the WDW version the show building is directly behind the facade building. It's pretty fun to see how they adapt certain attractions when they have more or less space. Tower of Terror is another where the lack of space in DL is evident, as the ride vehicles simply travel on a vertical path as opposed to the circular path they take in WDW.

I feel that the versions at DLR are superior to that of WDW. I like how Pirates goes past the Blue Bayou restaurant, has that first drop and goes through the Grotto, etc. HM has that elevator from the Stretching room, the Haunted Mansion Holiday in the Fall, etc.

Splash Mountain at WDW is longer and has more show scenes owing to more space. Of the duplicate rides the only WDW versions I prefer at Splash and ToT though I find HM to be pretty different.
