Haunted mansion. People do this?!

Cool. I'll be in your living room, watching TV. And I had no idea so many people had medical degrees and done so much research about such a topic. AIDS? No problem. Hepatitis? Bring it. SARS, I laugh at it.

Good to know.
Why would you be in my living room watching TV?

Sorry, don't get it.

As far as professions go, they run the gamut here on the DIS, same goes for intelligence levels and age ranges. No matter what the topic there is prob someone here who knows something about it.

You can always research the answer yourself if you don't believe what a poster has said. If a poster is wrong, it is helpful to correct the poster so that others can know the correct information. Of course it is best to correct in the politest manner possible, respectfull disagreements should always be welcome.

I am not a medical professional but have done research on this topic for personal reasons. I have seen the furnaces and have had the process described in detail from 2 reputable crematories.

Well, I'll tell you why I am grossed out. I can't and won't speak for others. I am grossed out because frankly I don't want any possible disease you or somebody else might have had coursing through my body. In addition, just the thought of your human remains -- in any form getting on me in any way is, well, repulsive.

There are reasons for burials, outside the ceremony of it all. There are reasons people who are cremated are placed in urns and not simply dumped in a pile at Yankee Stadium or Disney World or all over the Empire State Building.

I mean, think about it. What do we know of SARS, AIDS, hepatitis, or any number of diseases out there? What do you know of herpes or any STD, for that matter? You mean to tell me only those who are 100% disease-free are allowed to do this? What if, God forbid, I die of full-blown AIDS, am cremated and my ashes are scattered on your front lawn because you don't see anything wrong with that. Is this still OK with you?

This is not something that's cool. This is something that is cool in theory. I get it. I understand the thought behind it all. Sure, I would love to spend eternity in the Tower of Terror -- who wouldn't?

But for the health of others -- for the safety or your child and others out there, I and whatever possible diseases I have, should be disposed of properly and kept where they can not infect or harm others in any way.

And the possiblity of THAT is what grosses me out.

If the diseases were still contagious after cremation, I suspect that in the land of a million lawsuits it would be illegal to spread ashes ANYWHERE.

(disclaimer love your country but you have to admit plenty of lawsuits)

In fact fire is used in many countries in times of disaster, death etc to ensure diseases aren't spread.

FWIW.. the heat required to fully cremate a body is around 1500f. The heat used in autoclaves, which sterilize MEDICAL equipment for use in surgery is about 150c, or about 300f. You'd think it'd be enough to sterilize the remains. Seriously.. I know that when I die, I want my remains scattered near horses and in the river I grew up playing in. I even called the local health agency and they said it'd be perfectly fine to do so, there are absolutely no codes against it. One would imagine that if there aren't any codes against it, it's safe.

So then I guess the question is pretty obvious: Why can't we just spread cremated human remains anywhere we want? Schools. Hospitals. Candy stores. Wal Mart. What's the problem?

Look, it's a simple matter. It's unacceptable to Disney World and pretty much any other business of any size in the United States to scatter your human remains -- ashes or otherwise -- anywhere. Toss them to the wind and let them blow in your face for all I care. (though I am pretty sure you wouldn't do that). Just keep you human remains away from me.

Argue all you want. But please, keep your charred human remains to yourself. That's all. It's not too much to ask, is it?

Is it really?:confused3

I told my kids they could have a deluxe week in WDW if they would sprinkle me around the place in several different spots. I told them to be cool about it, don't get caught. Divide me up into small ziplocks, each one gets to join in the fun.
Knowing my kids like I do, they'll probably take the whole box and dump it in a McDonalds trash can on I-4 and say, close enough.

I've given my son the same instructions for my remains. I've told him the various spots that I would like to be left at around WDW. I too have concerns about where I will end up, as he is a bit on the clumsy side and likes to rush through things. I'm hoping to al least make it to one of the theme park parking lot garbage cans before he enjoys his vacation.

1 - because it's disrespectful...NOT because you're going to get a disease.

2 - the only thing anyone was arguing with you about was that you were incorrect in saying that you could get AIDS, SARS, or whatever else from it, not about the morality of it or whether it was right or wrong. They were disputing your stated "fact" not your opinion.

Walmart???? I love it..... I love Walmart but I would draw the line at being spread there. Plus all those places you would just be swept up and put in the bin.

How could anyone feel they have a right to throw their ashes at WDW or any other public place? Why would they want to anyway? Be stepped on, thown away, rained on etc.

If you were to die of AIDS, SARS, Hepatitis or any other tranferable disease and were cremated the heat of the fire would kill the virus COMPLETLY. Also viruses can only live outside a living host for so long. And if you were scattered in my front yard the wind would carry you away. So I guess to answer your question, It would not bother me.

The reason people are not allowed to dump their remains in a pile at Yankee stadium is simple. Living people do not want to look at a growing pile of ashes. Have you seen the quantity of ashes a full grown person leaves behind? It's a lot. More people should do what my father had done with his. The majority of him went into the lake behind his house and my brother and I received a small amount. He is in an urn in my living room until I find a place to put him. Because really, after I pass who am I going to leave him too? The thought of passing down Grandpa Finley from generation to generation grosses me out more than spreading him somewhere.

After over twenty trips there so far, and tens of thousands of dollars spent there, I feel I have a right to be spread there if it is my final wish. I'm not planning on having my ashes scattered on some crowded walkway or thrown in the air mid-ride. I'm fine with being scattered in "off the beaten path" places like bushes, canals, or grassy areas. As to why I would want to, it's just that feeling of happiness there, the sounds of laughter, the music. It seems so much better than being buried in some dreary cemetery where you will be stepped on, rained on, etc.

Excellent!!!

You know, what I was thinking is that after I die, I want to be cremated and have my ashes put in your back yard. Maybe just a few scattered into the flower beds outside your front door so your kids, family pets and friends can share my essence. In addition, because of course it's not weird at all, I want just a pinch of my cremated human remains to be scattered within the walls of your home!

Good times!:thumbsup2

Well…the neighbor cat stops by and "visits" my flower beds from time to time. Another neighbor pet leaves me presents (mice that it has killed) at the back door on a nightly basis as thanks for the dinner I sometimes give him when he's hungry. I watched a hawk eviscerate and eat a squirrel while he was sitting on my back fence the other evening. Occasionally the dog messes in my back yard get into the double digits when I don't get out there to clean it up fast enough.

If you want to add some ashes to the mix in our yard, I'm sure we won't even notice. I'll just tell people to check their shoes when they come in...just like we do with the dog.

Moreover, if you want to be inside our wall, then you'll have to share that space with the mice that occasionally find their way in from the field, get trapped in the wall and die.

On the bright side, your ashes wouldn't put off a odor like a decaying mouse does...

Let's just agree to disagree folks... this thread is heading to shut down shortly anyway.

I love this. I agree. Ashes are ashes. I'd rather have someone's dust and memories floating around than the trash littered about. If I get swept up, I could not care less. I just enjoy the thought now of a part of me becoming a part of that world. There is already dirt and decomposing stuff all around. A little more won't hurt.

Disney is private property...why do you think you would have the right to be "disposed" of there? What if your former home owner loved the property so much they felt they paid their taxes while living there & they wanted to dump their ashes in your yard? Would you agree to it? What if they did it without your consent? I just don't see that Disney should allow this behavior-if they had a spot for it, great!

I would have absolutely no problem with a former homeowner's family coming and leaving their ashes on my property. It's the circle of life!

Yes, I wouldn't either IF they asked & were put in a place where my children & friends & dogs didn't play! That's why I say-I, too would love to have my resting place there but just not randomly scattered...a proper place-YES!!! I just don't think people should think they have a right to do this-especially if it's against the law in Florida.

Maybe they could use those empty Leave a Legacy stones by SSE and transform them into a columbarium. I think it's the least they can do for those of us that never got a chance to put something there before it closed. It still makes me angry walking by the empty stones and knowing I can't add my message.

Maybe the Disney Burial Club (DBC)?

Oh, I'm not voicing my opinion on whether or not it's "ok" to do this at WDW...I'm gunna keep that to myself ;) Just saying it wouldn't bother me if someone came and dumped ashes in my yard...and honestly...they could do it under my kid's swing and I probably wouldn't even notice...:flower3:

Funny thing is though...I was googling stuff to make sure that you couldn't catch diseases from human ashes, and I found a site where this company will make DIAMONDS out of your loved one's ashes. Now, walking around with my gma on my ring finger might creep me out...lol!
