Hatfields and McCoys

THAT is Tom Berenger? I'd been waiting to see him after I saw his name in the opening creds. Turns out I'd been "seeing" him all along, just didn't know it. Holy crap!

What did everyone think of last night's episode? The scene with the three brothers getting shot was so intense I had to look away. They certainly aren't sparing any of the gore/realism.

Mama Hatfield is in on lots of the family decisions, too. Anyone else notice how Anse looks to her for approval or her opinion on things before he decides?

Can't wait for the finale tonight :yay:

I had no idea that was Berenger! I thought maybe he had a small part at the end of the movie - only 40 minutes left and I hadn't seen him yet!

Yeah that was Tom Berenger....He did a great job...he was ruthless

I am a huge Kevin Costner fan, he is by far my favorite actor, and I was so excited to see this...he did a great job...

they story was well done and as factual as it could have been...I do think however it jumped ahead to fast...especially the last episode....but thats my only complaint

Why in the world did they let Cotton top tag along?

I know! I couldn't believe they did that, and then left him to watch the back of the house. I felt so awful for him at the end.

I really wish this had lasted another night or two. The ending seemed rushed to me, but I did really enjoy it. The fishing scene with Johnse and his father had me in tears!

I think they could have sped up the very first 90 minutes of the series and slowed down the last 90 minutes.

I will say it got better as it went along and once again I will say I appreciated them not trying to sanitize or PC the story or actions or setting/costuming and language.

My DH and I really enjoyed it. (He caught up after the first night.)

We also thought the ending seemed rushed, and wondered the same thing about Cotton Top - if even for his own safety.

The scene that finally brought me to tears was the graveyard scene with Johnse. And I was glad that Anse acknowledged the question of how it might have been different had they not forbidden the relationship between Johnse and Roseanna, as I'd been wondering that myself since the beginning.

So sorry this is over (yet so glad - my eyes are dried out from looking like this  for 2 hours a night).

I cried at everything last night. The scene with Johnse/Anse. The scene where Johnse was at the grave. The ambush at the cabin. When Cottontop was hung.

I agree with PP - wish they would have sped up the first part of it and slowed down the last part. DH and I could barely keep up trying to read what happened to all of them in the end, they were running it so fast.

I would watch a well-made historical show like this any day over some of the "reality" shows they are producing these days. Please TPTB, bring back quality television again.

I've just started watching and really like it. I have to say that Romania does not look like the Tug Valley! There is way too much flat land and sky. The Hatfield-McCoy feud area has mountains that are much closer together.

I said to DH last night that I had never seen a spot that flat in all of Pike County. His response "Except where they've strip mined.":lmao:

Finished watching tonight. Really enjoyed the series, even where not historically accurate :)

historically accurate ...somethings were not.
First Asa Harmon was not shot in a cabin. He was hiding in a cave. The logan wildcats found him by following Harmon's slave who was the one bringing him food and water.

Pig trial Preacher Anse was the judge not Wall. Wall Valentine was Devil's grandfather...Uncle Wall Valentine was Devil's brother.

Roseanna, Johnse, Nancy and Bad Frank. Well that was a good story they told in the mini series. Most of it true but from family stories Johnse was never in love with Roseanna. She was in love with him. When someone died from a broken heart back then it meant they committed suicide. She wasn't taking care of her mother when it happened.

Johnse and Nancy were married about 10 years or so and had two kids before they split. Rumor has it Johnse left Nancy for another woman. Nancy and Bad Frank did marry she had two more kids with him.

Claim to fame my husbands 4th great grandfather was Thomas Hatfield. Devil Anse's uncle. We have pictures of dh's grandfather on Devil's lap. My maiden name is McCoy but no direct line to "ole Ran'l" lol.

Very interesting, mealcu. Thanks.

I looked at a few websites and pictures yesterday and it all seemed pretty confusing, lol. But in the articles I've read about the series, they did at least strive for historical accuracy and I guess even had a McCoy descendant on the set as part of the production crew.

I also read that the miniseries broke records for viewers watching and was a huge hit for the History Channel. :goodvibes

Say what you want about the min-series.......Tom Berenger stole the show as the uncle...i didn't know it was him till the last night..

It took me ALL 3 NIGHTS to figure that out:lmao: and I was looking all over for him from seeing the name in the credits.

It was a great series. Really really enjoyed it. I agree the ending could have been a little slower and I think they could have left the epitaphs(?) at the end on for just a couple of seconds longer for the characters. I had to read quick for some of them, and didn't get to finish 1 or 2.

YES. THIS. I was reading them outloud for DH (who was sitting across the room and couldn't see the tiny writing) and we missed most of them.

Again, I mentioned to DH where a DVR would have come in handy :rolleyes1

I will say one thing, though - historically accurate or not, this made me want to go out and read a book (or several) on the subject. I want to know more. That's good programming for you! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I kind of missed watching it tonight. :p

Care to elaborate, Gumbo?

The timeline was out of whack in a few places. IIRC, the McCoy who flipped the verdict in the pig trial was actually killed ~2 years after the pig trial, not sentenced to prison nearly 20 years later. There was also a point in the mini-series that leap-frogged several years, but part of the storyline played out as if it were just a few months. Beyond that, I've got nothing. But, thanks to maelcu for filling in a few more blanks :)

I had to put my TV on 1/4 speed :lmao:
