That's true, but there won't be any problems using the PC or Mac versions of excel or access.

True, that will get the data there but see above..what are you going to do with it?
Well, I've gone back & forth between the same version on a Mac & PC & found that as long as the disk stays formatted as PC there's no problems working with it on either end.

I have..oh trust me I have.. it's a real hoot when someone says "where is the chooser" or "why does this mouse have so many buttons" :)
LOL. I have just as much fun with PC people who can't figure out how to eject their disk..."but if I put it in the trash won't it mess my disk up?" ;)

When your uptime can be measured in months....it's pretty to me!!!
True, but you also have to consider that the average person still has at least a little trouble navigating the the 2 more user friendly ones. Granted some people can't figure out how to set up their VCRs, but I think they have to consider this. Until Linux can come up with a more user friendly version (of course some would argue it's around & it's called Mac OSX) they'll remain in the tiny percentage of users.

I work in a publishing house on a Mac on the small ads section in magazines. Whilst education and publishing used to be classed a Mac domain, that's far from true now - a large proportion of files that I receive on a daily basis have been generated on a PC. These are Word Docs, Quark files, Photoshop files and occasionally Excel files - apart from an occasional 'blip' I am able to work with ALL of them without problems.

Hallie - your situation actually sounds ideal for an iMac :) I have one at home myself and use it for all the things you mention and I wouldn't swap it for anything else! The only thing I would say is to double check with all the people that you'd be paying bills with that they are mac compatible - depending on how they've set their website up, it might not work. I am able to pay most of my bills online, with the exception of one because of that.

Any questions, feel free to ask :)

We haven't asked the most important question of all! Are there as many games available for a Mac???

No. There are not as many games admittedly - but as a large number of the games for PC are just junk, that doesn't mean as much as it first appears. It's quality rather than quantity after all ;)

There are plenty of top quality games for the mac though - most of the biggies develop for both platforms though sometimes it comes out on PC first, the only problem is that you can't buy that many off the shelf - you have to get them mail order, but they are most certainly there as I play 'em. We still get our Harry Potter, The Sims, Warcraft III etc :)

For an idea of some games that are available, you can check out Inside Mac games which gives reviews and Mac Game Database which lists more games than you can shake a stick at. You could also check out Gameranger - a site that is dedicated to Mac ONLY online gaming - it's a huge site and growing all the time.

The Mac platform really isn't as bleak as it can be made to seem :)

I read that with OSX being based on Unix it's going to be a lot easy for the developers to make the games cross platform. In a couple years, we'll probably see the smaller boxes being the norm & the games switching from
CD-Roms to DVDs & work on both systems.

Personally I don't like computer gaming & mainly stick with consoles. It's a smaller screen, the sound isn't as great, you have to make sure all your parts are up to snuff & it's only multiplayer if you're online. Plus the chair usually isn't as comfy as the sofa. ;)

When I buy an Xbox game, I know it will work in my Xbox. I can play online or with 15 other friends in the house. I can hook it up to as big of a TV as I want & on some of the games I can even make my own soundtracks. I know a lot of people like Unreal or Quake, but for my money, Halo is tops (every Saturday night a group of us get together, about 8-16 people, & play Halo). Yup, I love my Xbox...even if it is made by MS. ;)

MS doesn't make it. Flextronics and Acer make it. :) Does that make you feel better?

Don't even get me started on the original question!

I do agree that the Mac may be a better choice for the original poster. (Did I just say that?)
