Our family's flight leaves Chicago O'Hare at 6pm to Orlando. In order to get to the airport on time, I'll have to pick up my DD7 directly from school then head out. I was told that adult and kids meals were available for purchase on Ted. We'll be traveling during the dinner hour and I know DD7 and DS5 will be hungry. Is it worth paying money for the meals, are they decent, or should I pack my carry on bag with something like Subway???

I have never purchased meals on a flight, someone please let me know what your experiences have been with meals on Ted.

Thanks!!

I have flown TED on several occasions and also purchased meals on board. The meals are decent and I find it more convenient than bringing breakfast, lunch or dinner on board with me. One thing to consider though is that they may not always have the choice that you are looking for. There should be a menu in the seatback of your seat. The cabin crew also hand these out. If you go to www.flyted.com, it should give you some idea of the fare.

Enjoy

I would stop and buy what your family enjoys instead of buying what they have onboard.

The box isn't bad but I would rather eat something that I like instead of their idea of a meal.

I just assumed that "Ted" was just another United airlines flight that serves a meal. We are stopping over in Dulles to Orlando and are flying 5-7pm. Just assumed we would be served a "meal". Is Ted an ecomony flight?

Ted is the economy arm of United. For a two hour flight you would get a snack and drink. So if you want more than that bring it with you.

Cathyclownfish,

Although Ted is an economy airline of united airlines, apparently their meals don't operate the same way. I was told by ted that for our flight between Chicago and Orlando meals would be offered for purchase. I think they are only offered on flights longer than 2 hours. They probably still offer peanuts and pretzels, and I know the softdrinks are still complementary, but on this budget airline, meals are never free, it just depends on the duration of your flight whether they are offered or not.

That's why I wondered what people's opinions were of the quality and convenience of the meals.

dislvr75,

I believe that's what I answered for you. Yes I have purchased several meals on board. Yes I do find it convenient. Yes, I thought the quality was decent. My only caution was that flights that offer "meals for purchase" may not always have the quantity or the type of meal that is offered on their menu. On several occasions and several different flights (not just TED), we've been told that they were running low on meals and would not be able to offer it to everyone.

Catering companies supply these flights differently because they know that not everyone is going to purchase a meal and the airlines are obviosuly trying to cut down on meals that go to waste.

Hope this helps :D

I very much appreciate your response, it was exactly what I was looking for!!

In my reply I was reponding to Safetymom, because she said that its an economy airline and you would get a snack and a beverage. Kathyclownfish in her post said, "I assumed we would get a meal". I wanted to make sure she knew, there were no free meals on Ted, if she wanted one she would have to buy it.

Sorry for the confusion CAP Aircrew!

I flew Ted back in July (not to Fla, though). They offered some "special" meal that sounded tasty (a choice of deluxe sandwich or chicken caesar salad, I think) for $10, or a boxed lunch for $5. We decided to opt for the $5 meal. It contained a small sandwich plus three dessert/snack type items. I think it was oreos, chips or pretzels and a cookie, all brand names, regular size items. The sandwich was minimal (turkey and cheese on a small roll, I think) but with all the snacks it was worth $5, I guess, if you didn't opt to bring your own food.

We flew Ted out of ORD this July to MCO. Just before we got to the gate there was a stand that sold deli sandwiches, etc.. I picked up two of those. They were good sized and I'm sure airport priced but at least I knew we had something.

I don't know if TED always uses these gates but it was sort of down the corridor toward the old international gates.

On our flight, the offerings were as daisax explained and as CAP Aircrew said we were also warned that there might not be enough for everyone.

you will have a lot of opportunities to buy food for your flight, if you get to your gate early enough. Concourse C has a food court that includes Panda Express (my personal favorite), McD's, Vienna Beef, Cinnabon, amd many more fast food places. Concourse B is more limited but still has a McD's, Starbucks and Wolfgang Yuck (Puck). Here's a link to the Concourse map and food ..... O'Hare Concourse B & C Food Courts

I always looked forward to flying into C and leaving out of B.....Panda Express orange Chicken and chow mein for dinner :wizard:

Cool map Kitster!

I think the place I bought our sandwiches must have been Great American Bagel although I didn't buy bagels. The gate we were at was just a little farther than that, around a corner and down...or was it up:o..... ramp. Where that sort of appendix like thing is at the bottom of the map. Don't know if all Ted gates are there though.

None of the major carriers offers meals in coach unless the flight is over 3 or 3 1/2 hours long. This isn't just with the discount carriers. On a flight from Dulles to Orlando I don't think any carrier would be serving a "complimentary' meal in coach.

Kitster,

What a great resource! That is exactly the kind of info I needed to know. Thanks again for sharing.
