My 20 year old son went to the Dr. today ( I wasn't with him) because he is running a fever and has a very swollen painful sore throat that he developed late saturday night. The Dr. gave him one of those quick tests for strep throat and said he had strep throat. My son said they did not do the test that takes 24 hrs. to show the results. He gave him a shot, but did not give him any other type of medication to take over the next 10 days. He is having quite a bit of discomfort due to his sore throat. He won't even talk, just writes what he wants.

Has anyone ever heard of Strep Throat being treated with only one shot?

In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to make him feel better, other than giving him tylenol/Aleve, and drinking water?

I know the quick test works well........my son had strep but NEVER ran a high fever and his throat never got SEVERE. I just thought he had a virus......well a few days later there are bumps all over his arms.......we take him to the Dr. and they did the quick strep test and he had Scarlett Fever........he NEVER had a bad sore throat or high fever.

He did take medicine though and had a shot as well.

Was this your regular Dr. or the E.R?

Tylenol Sore Throat is awesome for those bad sore throats. Hugs to your son, my DD is very suseptible to Strep.. one year she had it 5 times in 2 months! (As soon as she finished her antibiotics she would spike a fever again.)

You can get a high dose of antibiotics in a shot. Did your DS ask what they were giving him? It could have ben PenVK a strong form of penecillan. Chloraseptic numbing spray can work for the pain.

Thank you for the responses!

This was a Dr. that he had never seen before (you get one of three on a call in basis). It was at our regular clinic, but it was a Dr. who was filling in because one of the regular clinic Dr's. was on leave. I don't know anything about him, one way or the other.

jingle--ive gone for strep alot (unfortunately!)..and always got the Zpack i believe..works wonders for me! tell son feel better--i know its miserable!

I don't know what kind of a shot he got and I can't find out until tomorrow.

I've never used it but I have friends who have said that the Z-Pack is awesome!

When I get Strep, I ask for the shot instead of the round of antibiotics. DH and I both got Strep throat in July. He got it first and went to the doctor 5 or 6 days before me. He got the pills, I asked for the shot. On his 8th day, he was still feeling sick. It was my 2nd day and I was all better. I'm usually out for one day where I can't do anything, and then the next it's like I was never sick.

DH says he'll get the shot next time....it's a much easier way to go.

zpack is Zithromax...you take 2 pills the first day..then one each....you dont have to take it the whole 10 days...its supposed to work ...
when i went away to school i got strep so bad...the dr prescribed me zpack and i felt better the next day

Yes, IMHO the shot is much better than the pills. This way you don't have to take the antibiotics for the 10 days. My dd had a bad sore throat this weekend. The dr. gave her the quick test and it wasn't strep. He told her to gargle with Mylanta or Maalox, because he said it will alleviate the pain. It coats the throat like it coats the stomach. Maybe your ds should try it. It can't hurt. I hope he feels better soon.

Jingle,

Your son probably got either a penicillin shot or a Rocephin shot. The pediatric practice that I work in usually uses Amoxil or PenVK as thier oral antibiotics for strep throat. If the patient will not take oral anitbiotics then we will administer a shot of Rocephin. The shot isn't particularly pleasant, but it is HIGHLY effective.

As far as quick strep tests, we don't use them in the office. We perform throat cultures. These are more accurate.

Hope your son feels better soon!!!

I'm glad to hear that a shot works! I'm still going to call them tomorrow to see exactly what test they did on him. I know it's not the throat culture that takes 24 hrs. I just got him some Tylenol Sore Throat. He is having a very hard time swallowing it. I hope he gets some down and it makes him feel a little better. Thank you all for your responses.

My DGS (who is going with us on Sunday to WDW) also got strep this weekend. Poor little guy! Strep must really be going around right now! I sure hope the meds his doctor gave him will work quickly so he will feel great on Sunday!

Jingle,

If he is still having a lot of discomfort tomorrow see if they will give him some Roxicet (this is the liquid equivalent of Percocet). I had a severe strep throat and tonsillitis two years ago and this was very helpful. I forced myself to swallow it because I was miserable. I went to the ER the first night and they told me to take Advil. I begged my husband to call them back and she gave me Tylenol with codeine even after she looked in there and said "that looks ugly" while I was there. I really could not swallow the pills! I am a medical transcriptionist and it seems some doctors are more aware of how severe the pain can be from strep and willing to prescribe something and I seem to find the ones that give nothing. I don't like to take pills but that was very necessary that time. Also there is something called Viscous Lidocaine which you swish and spit that will numb it like Chloraseptic but more potent. I hope he gets some relief soon. I feel for him.

Good luck Karla. I hope you all have a great trip!

TinKim for the suggestion of Roxicet. When he gets sick, he just seems to get things so severly that he is completely miserable. Dr's here are very reluctant to prescribe pain medication, but sometimes it's really necessary!!!!!

This is still a sore subject between DD and DH. ;)

In may before DH was deployed DD was having a sore throat and he took her to the ped. She had strep as well and gave him the choice of 10 days of oral meds or one shot. DH being the no nonsense person he is chose the shot.. NOT to DD's liking. She got the shot in the (err bottom) and to make a long story short she didn't complain about her throat again.. mostly it was about how hard it was to sit down ;) Apparantly, she tensed when they gave the shot and because it's such a high dose of antibiotics it's thicker and can cause some area discomfort. She's still grumpy that he chose the needle over the meds. Her throat was amazingly better in a much shorter time than it would have been. Hope he feels better soon!
