Has anyone ever removed a large number of shrubs?

We have a line of shrubs on both sides of our house that are a pain to keep trim. The are only three feet tall and provide no privacy. I am tired of spending every weekend in the summer in ninety degree heat trimming them and want them gone. What is the best way to get rid of them? Do they need to be dug out? Could a tree service do it or should we call a landscape company? Thanks

Hi, Mary!

What type of shrubs are they? My parents had a bunch of junipers planted along the side of their old house and decided they wanted to get rid of them. They were planted in clay soil, which is like cement when it's dry. I had to cut the bushes all the way down & dig around them for several days to get the stumps/roots out.

If you are planning to do this yourself, you should probably trim them down to the ground and then try to get the stump/roots out.

I don't know if a landscape company would do this. I have seen plenty of tree service people in our neighborhood over the years and I've never seen them working on landscaping shrubs - just big ol' trees. Sorry!

Good luck! :)

Welcome to the Flower & Garden board, cybrarian! :)

It sounds like you have some heavy work ahead of you. A good pick with a stout handle will help you in getting rid of large roots.

You might also be able to rent a small portable grinder to grind down the roots.

You can also call a couple of landscape companies and ask if they do this type of work, and get a price from them.

Keep us posted on your decision, and how the job goes, okay? :)

Kim :)
