When renting a vacation home?

· Upon departure all used bed linens will be striped from the beds and placed in the laundry room. The bath linens laundry will be washed and drying in the drier. Start the dishwasher and seal all trash bags, place the trash in the garage and leave the rental home tidy.

This is part of the terms and conditions of a home I am considering renting. We are a family of 9 and will be there for two weeks. While I planned to make sure we cleaned out the refrigerator and had the dishes done and out by 10 am, I didn't think I'd have to do laundry too. Is this normal?

I have never rented a house but I would not be up for doing housekeepings job.:confused3 I would make sure all of the trash and food is disposed of and that I do not trash the place but this seems like too much.

I guess it's nice to get things started for the cleaning crew BUT the owners could have made it sound like a request instead of a demand. :confused3

This is common in other markets where I have rented homes, but I have never seen it required in the Orlando market.

However, we do most of those things anyway (although we haven't stripped the beds ever).

I think there is not much time to clean a larger home between check out and check in and adding several loads of laundry to the mix makes thing harder for the cleaners. However, this shouldn't be your problem unless you are willing to accept these terms to get the house you want!

I also find this a little demanding.....it's hectic enough on moving out day, but to have to do all the laundry for 9 guests ?
I've never rented a home, but we do stay in timeshares (DVC and Vistana). While we definitely tidy up (clean out refrig and all), we never have to wash all the bed linens. This would take quite a long time as I'm guessing this is anywhere from 4-6 beds for 9 people. If one has an early flight, this is almost impossible to do !?? I find it unreasonable. We've had 6 and 7 am flights in the past. Getting up early enough just to make it to the airport is a chore.

What happens if you don't do this I wonder ?

We stayed at Fantasy World Villas on one trip and their check out instructions asked us to put the towels in the washer and start the washer before we left. We have never stripped the beds though and I think it is a bit much to think you will have time to put the towels in the dryer. Let's face it, you will likely shower before you leave and could put the towels in the washers, but unless you have a late flight you won't have time to wait to put them in the dryer too. I think putting the trash sealed in the garage is reasonable as is running the dish washer.

Thanks everyone. I've never rented a house in Orlando so I wasn't sure if this is something I should be asking of the other properties I'm interested in. Since check out is by 10 am I can't imagine I'll have time to do all of that and still be out by 10, unless I have everyone up by 5am! The owner requires a $500 security deposit so I imagine if you don't do it you would lose either all or some portion of the security deposit. I think I'm going to pass on this property. There are lots of others out there for my time frame and in my price range -and nothing has been said about stripping beds or doing laundry.

I have to agree with you Darcy....I'd pass as well on this. Bed linens are just too demanding for a family to be responsible for on move-out day. What are those renters thinking ?

When we stayed in Kissimmee in Nov, we were asked to do the following on checkout:

Strip the beds and place linens in the laundry room.
Start the dishwasher
Bag up the trash and place it in the can in the garage, unless it's trash day then leave it outside

It honestly took a whole 10 minutes to do it all, and we did wash the towels the day before we left. We threw in a load in the washer before we went to the park, threw it in the dryer during our afternoon break, and folded it the the morning we left. We left the towels from our showers that morning in the laundry room.

We've always had to strip the beds, and start a load of laundry before we left, every house we've ever rented.

I agree with ChellyOO, it's not a huge deal at all...throw on a load of sheets - usually the master king sheets - as soon as we're up in the morning, finish packing, sheets go in the dryer, throw on another load, and we leave...

Same for dishwasher, turning it on as we are loading the car..and all garbage tied up.

I have left the towels we used on the day of departure, but do try to have all the pool towels laundered the night before...that's usually what I'm pulling out of the dryer as I'm loading in the sheets in the am:teeth:

HTH!
:sunny:

Every house I rented before I bought one was the same for us too. We stripped the beds and what we didn't get washed we left by the washer and dryer. It really did not take long to do it.
:goodvibes

Hi we have been asked at some vacation homes to do this, but certainly not all. And it has always been a request not a condition. It is usually only the first load into the washing machine.

As an owner when we first started renting our home we asked very little of our guests. When we started getting more bookings and had back to backs our cleaners had trouble keeping up.

I make sure our home is fully stocked with towels and pool towels. We have since added terry robes to the list. I have had to add that pool towels and terry robes need to be laundered by guests before they leave. On the last day could they strip sheets and start a wash and start the dish washer.

We have a 6 bedroom 5 bath and there is not enough time for the cleaners to wash and dry all additional linens and to clean the home in the time alloted. Our guests are given the choice if they would like to make use of the robes and pool towels there are plenty to choose from.

In our resort all trash has to be bagged and put in trash cans. We live in a gated community and these are resort rules.

I guess I respectfully don't see it as no big deal. On our last 3 stays in WDW, we had a very early departure flight (those are the cheapie ones ! lol).
As it was, we had to get up at 3:30 am in Feb to catch a 6 am flight. I could not see doing 2-3 loads of wash (estimate for 4-6 beds for 9 people) and trying to catch an early flight/pack/and get everyone going ? I guess I'm different but this would stress me out. :scared1: :rotfl:

At Cypress Pointe they ask you to strip the beds and leave everything by the w/d. I don't mind doing that at all. But it would take a long time to wash all the sheets for 9 people and have them waiting in the dryer (plus you'd have to fold the ones that come out sooner???).

IMO, unreasonable.

The rest, trash and run d/w, being tidy, no big deal. I do it anyway, at DVC.

I ask my guests IF THEY HAVE TIME to strip the beds as it helps the cleaners know which ones have been used - sometimes not all the beds are needed-and to put a washer full of towels on as we have so many and if they are leaving on trash day to put the bins out .The rest is up to the cleaners .

After reading everyone's replies and comments I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it if it were a request and not a condition. If I have time I certainly wouldn't mind doing some laundry and I definitely planned on cleaning out the refrigerator and taking out the garbage (I don't think anyone should have to clean out my leftovers, etc.), but with an early checkout and/or an early flight, I don't see how I would have time to do laundry. Just trying to get 9 people showered, dressed, packed, the car packed, clean out the refrigerator and take out all the trash by 10 am would be tight.

We've rented many times and always strip the beds and start the laundry. It doesn't say that you have to wash all the bedding, just put it by the washer. We usually leave with the towels in the dryer and a load of bedding in the washer. Load of dishes in the dishwasher and all garbage out. It's no big deal. Takes less time than you think.

Can you just wash the towels the day before. It doesn't say you have to wash any of the bed linens, just strip the beds. It's literally a minute to yank sheets and blankets off a bed. We left our rental at 5am and with everyone pitching in, we had the sheets in the laundry room in just a matter of minutes.
