This isn't to re-hash the should we or shouldn't we take our kids out of school for a Disney trip....I am just wondering if anyone has ever taken their child/children out of school for ANY reason for an unexcused absence and gotten in "trouble" from the school? What could the school do to you anyhow?? Not a debate - just a question.

I don't know, but I did hear on the news this weekend that a lawmaker (state senator or rep) in North Dakota is trying to push his state to enforce a FELONY law on unexcused absences! YIKES!

I do have a friend in Social Services for the state and they have taken parents to court, but it is generally for things like MONTHS of absences not just a few days. In those cases they are basically setting up to take the child away from the parents if the parents don't get with it! (More then once the parent has said "my child didn't want to go to school" as if that was a good reason!)

I have never gotten "in trouble" but I do know people that have had their grades not honored for all days missed which resulted in zero's for all classes.

I took my 2 kids at the time out of school unexcused. Everyone told me (other parents) that even though it was against school policy most teachers are very good about it. Well that was not my experience. They would not let them make up any work. They got zeros on their spelling tests. They were going to make them stay after school for a week, but I fought and fought and fought with the office and basically refused to let them. The principal, office secretary and school nurse basically hate me over this situation. When ever I have any issues, this basic distrust with the educaters makes every meeting more difficult because they perceive me badly. I would never do it again. It had a significant and bad impact on me and my children.

i fought so hard against staying after because it wasn't their fault it was mine. I even offered to come and stay after school for them myself:(

when my older daughter was in 6th grade we had a real issue with getting to school on time. she'd miss homeroom, but she'd be in school from first period until the end of the day. she was carrying a B+ average. she was late 25 times over a three month period.

I got a letter from the school threatening to report me to child protective services for "educatinal neglect" !

obviously an overreaction. though she has never been late to school since then.

if I were pulling her out of school for a few days, I would make sure that the absences were considered "excused."

In my district, they are allowed 5 days of approved "educational trip" time. As far as unexcused, my daughter has had some because I forgot to write a note. I don't really know what they would do though. Heck, I remember I used to skip school ALL the time, now it is worse than murdering someone.... I think that kids are being forced to grow up WAY to fast. Heck, my daughter was learning things in 1st grade that I didn't see till at least 4th or 5th grade!
