Has anyone decorated their Magic Bands? Please show us the pictures!

hi all - happy monday! Our trip is in late january; i'm guessing our bands ship at the end of the year.

I read all 142 pages - wow!

I have ideas percolating around our bands (there will be 5 of them, assuming a 2 year old gets banded, too....else, just 4).

Whether my "artistic ability" (cough, cough) is up to par to be able to actually make the ideas in my head into reality on an mb will remain a suspenseful mystery.

I'm wondering if there's a way to "pin" a post here with all the key reference information that has been shared. That way, it's all available in one spot, and doesn't have to keep being repeated every time someone asks?

Here's what i've written in my notes as i've obsessed around decorating our bands when they arrive:
  1. base coat on bare band, and as top coat.
  2. clear base coat, 3-4 coats of polish or acrylics, 2 coats of base coat to finish
  3. decorate bands in a curved (or even closed) position - not flat - to help prevent cracking
  4. use acrylics or nail polish, either works. If using nail polish, don't use the hardening kind, gel, or quick dry kind - they tend to crack more.
  5. do not use sharpie markers - they smear when doing top coats. Oil based paint pens have been used with varying degrees of success (some report that even these smear).
  6. the bands still work if the mickey heads are covered with paint, duct tape, and crystals
  7. many report success using temporary body art tattoos and nail art decals. You can create custom temporary tattoos using paper available at office supply stores or online.
  8. printable white vinyl can also be used to create a custom decal. (not quite sure how it adheres to a band? Does it work like a rub-on transfer?)
  9. some have reported good success using rub-on transfers directly on the band (no base coat)
  10. duct tape holds up well and is available in hundreds of patterns.
  11. to get a clear outline around mickey's head, paint and then remove using nail polish remover and a q-tip.
  12. to get uniform dots, use a nail art dotting tool. You can also use a straw dipped in paint (lightly!) to "stamp" a perfect circle.

hi gerberdaisy,

i did a post like this when i got through all the pages that existed at that time. I think there were 142 pages, and my post appears at the top of page 143?

I'm still on the lookout for temporary tattoos and/or rub-on transfers....our trip isn't until january...but it's all very exciting!

Hope that helps!
Annemarie

thanks!

Without going thru this entire thread, has anyone cut off the armband length around the center hard part to make the thing more like a fob?

Without going through all these pages again does anyone know if you can use the acrylic paint and if so how well does it hold up.

What would you do with the fob? Hang it from one remaining hole?
Make a new one?

This is very interesting to me, as I honestly don't like to wear bracelets.

Yes, acrylics work.
I'd go back and read, there's differing opinions on base coats and sealers.
General consensus is that it holds up well with some kind of sealer.

A lot of people use nail polish.
Personally I'll be researching use of Mod Podge Outdoor.

I was thinking make a new hole at the top (obviously cut it a little further up from the center Mickey), run a key ring thru, then attach to a carabiner. I'm only in the MK 1 day & staying in a resort 1 night pre-cruise with friends. I tried on this Mickey band thing. It's my first. I find it clunky and uncomfortable. I'd never wear it. I'll be carrying a wristlet so I was thinking it'd be most convenient if I could transform it into a fob that I could clip to the little metal loop where the wrist strap attaches to my wristlet. Because I'm not going to be on-property long & my family won't be there its not a situation where I'll use it for paying for anything. I can carry a little cash & be fine. I'm only using this as my room key and FP+. That's it. But I don't want to wear it. I just want to make it small as I can to reduce bulk.

I thought about trimming it down to the child size then closing it to the smallest size possible. I could run my wristlet strap thru that but it's still a bit bulky for my liking.

You can cut the side of the band with the holes but the other side has the bands antenna going thru it. So cut down the holes side then make a hole thru the mickey on the other side which has the pegs on the opposite side to run the ring to hang it off your bag. :thumbsup2 Link to a deconstructed Magicband: http://atdisneyagain.com/2014/01/27/making-the-band-magicband-teardown-and-more/

This is perfect info! Hubby and I have been staring at the thing, flexing it in different areas, trying to feel for internal rigid spots where electronic parts are. The visuals help a lot!

If you do this to your band be sure to post a picture and let us know how it went in WDW and the comments you got while using it. Others maybe helped from your experience. :thumbsup2

Finally painted mine! I used acrylics and sealed it with clear flex seal. It cracked a bit on the edges, but nothing major.

It's Winifred Sanderson inspired!

I will. What's the worst that can happen? I guess if I end up destroying the innards I'll get a key card when I get there. ?? That would fit nicely in my wristlet, now wouldn't it?

Thanks! From what I have been reading it looks as if more people think the clear base coat polish works better but when I look for it in the store all I can find is clear polich that is labeled top coat. since I do not use nail polish often am I missing something or is it hard to find clear base coat polish? Not sure about the Mod Podge but I though some one said it stated cracking. Just it worth checking intio though.

I believe the resorts have grey bands to give as replacement for those that loose their bands while at the parks or in the pools.

I read somewhere that they have some sort of plastic card that hangs (maybe from a cord), that they give out to people who are allergic to the plastic bands. Maybe you can ask about that.

I love the Lion King. Going to Disney in less than three weeks! There are four pictures. Pride Rock, Mufasa (or is it Simba?) from the musical, Simba's painting on the family tree, and the famous sunrise in the opening scene. Hope you guys like it. BTW I didn't paint the mickey head in fear of it not working.

DO those fit bits really secure the MB's ?????

Haven't ordered any, but, thinking about it.
:rolleyes1

Wish I would have seen this earlier. This answers alot of my questions but I have a few more before I tackle this project. When you mention acrylics you mean the paint that is for crafts correct? I have bought the metalic acrylic paint in gold and silver and light pearl blue. Each bottle was only $1.77 in Walmart. I also see the same colors in a nail polish but it would cost me around $18. I don't mind spending it if the polish will work better but if they are about the same then it is a no brainer to use the cheeper paint verson. Any one done both and have a prefrence? Also if you do go with the acrylic paint do you still need a base coat clear nail polish before and after the paint? These are my last questions and then I am ready to create:artist:

Finally got a halfway decent pic of my band. Sorry, there's still a lot of glare. :(

I wanted to report back on how my Magic Band held up on my trip. My MB was decorated with 5 thin layers of glow-in-the-dark Mod Podge, Frozen temporary tattoos from Party City, and a few light layers of Aleene's Matte Acrylic Sealer Spray.

My trip was short (3 days), but my MB was exposed to intense hot and sunny weather, and rain. There was some very small, super thin cracks around where the band curves under the wrist. They are not very noticeable unless you're looking closely. I was also careful to not flatten out the MB, which would probably result in large cracks. It held up well and I could even use this band again on my next trip.

The coolest part was that the band glowed when we were on the dark rides! I also got lots of comments from CMs, even one who thought I had bought the Frozen MB from Wandering Oaken's Trading Post!
