Harry Potter Book 7 *SPOILERS*

Interesting observation now that I'm re-reading the series: in Sorcerer's Stone, Dumbledore's device that extinguishes lights is called a "Put Outer". In Deathly Hallows, it's a "Deluminator". Apparently it was promoted and got a fancier title. :teeth:

good catch! :thumbsup2

Just saw the movie today for the first tie and as an aside i was a little disspointed but no i dont think he says good one jame in the book. I just reread it before watchign the movie (which could be why i tthoguth it was disspointing) but i definetly herad him say it in the movie, maybe it was the movies way of showing that side of him to the audience since they didnt really go into very much detail like the book.
I thought they skipped a lot of importatn parts but thats just me.

You're right about the "good one James" part - not in the book (not in that form at least) but it was one of the opportunities they took to show this sorta confusion when he looked at Harry. The other one in the movie was early on when the Order is meeting and you can hear them arguing behind the door on if/what to tell Harry and Mrs. Weasley says, "He's not James" when speaking to Sirius. So they tossed in a couple references back to the book that Sirius often looked at and treated him like he had his old buddy back.

I thought, though, that this was because the chapter of the Sorcerer's stone in which the device was introduced was being told from a "muggle" perspective, so to speak. Everything that is done is narrated as though it were a muggle who knew nothing of magic watching the events unfold. even if the device were called "deluminator" muggles would have no way of knowing, and "put outer" would be a non-magical description.

I may be completely off, though.

I think also that petunia and dumbledore have some sort of understanding of each other since we come to find out that she wrote to him a while back wanting to go to that school. I think she has no choice but to allow harry to stay and side against her husband.
Was Dumbledore headmaster when Petunia wrote to try to get accepted into Hogwarts? I don't have my copy handy and I can't remember exactly if it said she wrote to Dumbledore or just to the headmaster.

Yes, he was headmaster when Lily and James were in Hogwarts.

I just finished this book this morning..... I loved it! I wish she would write another about the 19 years in between or even the new generations adventures at Hogwarts. I'm not ready to say good bye to these characters!

I sped read it(is that correct english??!) in 2 days and then re-read it slower and just finished. Boy did I miss a lot reading and exhausted all at once, but who could put it down?!

I have to say that I am more depressed now after the second reading. I cannot believe it's over. Happy for Harry, yeah, a good uneventful(well, beyong having children and getting married, which, I would say are HUGE events, esp for him) Voldemort-free life sounds great. But I would actually like to have read about the milder more beautiful things that happen to him and all his friends in later years-before that 19 years later thing.

I think of Harry's post Voldy years as more special than the norm. I guess anyone who goes through hell as a young person, it makes the normal things that happen later in thier lives that much bigger.

I will embarass my children one day!

I know what you mean ... however, I think we're so used to the action/adventure of Harry & Company that a regular, everyday like life might be considered "too boring" in comparison. You'd be reading it and going "When's something going to happen?". I think that Harry & Comany were meant to live mundane, everyday lives after the defeat of Voldemort. Nothing that would make for "good reading" (at least prob. in JKR's mind). I think JKR didn't want to disappoint fans w/a book (or chapters of) that didn't contain some kind of action/adventure in them.

Don't get me wrong ... I'd love to read anything more about Harry & Company!!!! I would've especially loved reading about the various engagements and weddings! Would've loved to have known how Harry proposed to Ginny, Ron to Hermione (after all, he isn't the most eloquent), etc. I mean, can you imagine how crazy Hermione must've made Ron while planning their wedding?!?! lol! I know that JKR told us what the rest of them did w/their lives (ie: Neville teaching, etc.) but it would've been nice to have it in the book! I also know that JKR said that she wrote down every couple and their children ... would've loved to have known who Malfoy married (I like to think Pansy), etc.

I agree with you. All of the descriptions in that chapter are sort of told from a Muggle perspective.

Something I noticed, in the new book it says that Ron is pretending to have "Spattergroit" as the reason he could not go back to Hogwarts. (I don't have the spelling for "Spattergroit" and don't want to look it up). Because it is very 'disfiguring' he was able to have a 'replacement' stand in for him.
I thought that disease was very familiar, but didn't know why. It turns out that Spattergroit is mentioned in book 5 (which I am reading to DD). When the kids leave Mr. Weasley's room, they have to go thru a corridor with medieval heallers yelling at them. One of those healers starts yelling at Ron that he has "Spattergroit" and needs to be healed.
nice touch.

oh, I am with you there. I was not really thinking that she should go on with another book. I really think it ended perfectly. Maybe she wanted her readers to fill in those blanks on our own with how "boring" and beautiful his life was after all his trauma. You are right, another book ,may not do as well if the action was non existent. I am no writer, so I will go with Jo. It was an awesome series-just hated seeing the end of my own selfish enjoyment of the series. My DD9 is now reading them (book 6 already, started 2 months ago) and now we can talk about it. I am actually looking up a language arts curr. for the books. I homeschool my 2 kids.

It's gonna' be wierd passing them down to grandchildren one day.

I agree, JKR would probably bore herself trying to write that in her stories, although the true fans would love every last detail! :goodvibes

I wonder if it were Hermione that would have made the proposal to Ron... after all she was a strong headed girl and Ron was pretty slow when it came to all that stuff. I'd like to think that Harry had some crazy romantic proposal... or maybe a game of quittich and when Ginny catches the snitch it opens and the ring was inside...

I'd like to actually think that Malfoy ended up with a nice girl who was a half-blood and was able to bring out the softer side in him, and keep him grounded. I can't think of anyone specifically, but I'd rather it were someone other than Pansy, she annoyed me terribly!

:lmao: Great catch on that! I knew it sounded familiar! Wasn't it said because of all his freckles? I can't wait to re-read the series and find all those little things that plant a seed for later importance or explanations!

I'm just trying to imagine what Mr. Weasley must be like with Hermione's relatives since he's so fascinated with Muggles and now he has them as in-laws. He probably drove Mrs. Weasley crazy at their wedding!

I like that she left the 19-year gap open. When you read that last line, "And all was well." you just knew everything was fine and you could imagine how many good things happened to them since. Knowing the characters so well, it's fun to put it together!

I cried my eyes out when Harry opened the Snitch and his parents etc joined him and he asked about dying. When he asked if they would stay with him... and they said they would.... it was so sad.

I think Draco married someone with some redeeming qualities..... I'm hoping he turned out better than his father.

I doubt Draco turned out better than his father, maybe because of how many times Harry saved him or maybe he has a good wife...but it is just hard to see Draco as anything more than a butt.
