Hanging stockings with no mantle

I haven't had a fire place since I moved out at age 25. Up until two years ago, I used stocking holders (sort of like a heavy bookend, but has a hook that hangs over the side of the shelf so you can hang your stocking) and just put them on my entertainment center. We got rid of the center a few years ago and now use a shelf on the wall over the TV.

This is what the stocking holder looks like. I've seen them at Target and Walmart, sold individually or in 3 or 4 packs.

We never had a fireplace or a banister. The boys hung their stockings from their bedroom doornobs. It was tricky when Santa had to fill them but it was fun..:santa:

Add us to the staircase banister crew as kids. My parents had some way of attaching them - although I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

In my last house (one story), we hung stockings on the entertainment center, also like a lot of other posters.

My current house has a fireplace and mantel, but once a stocking is filled it's hard to actually keep it hanging there. It's just too heavy for 99% of stocking hooks. So after filling it, Santa just leaves it on the floor next to the fireplace :rolleyes1

We hang them on the bannister for the days leading up to Christmas, then on Christmas Eve, they get filled and left on a deacon's bench in our front room near the tree.

We've used the command hooks before, and they worked really well. I'm planning on using them to hang stockings in my apartment this year.

We've also used a small shelf with hooks under it, and hung them there. You could always only put the pub mirror up for the holidays, then take it back down after Christmas is over.

I had a big stone fireplace in my apartment in OH with no mantle. I used thick double-stick tape all over the back of the stocking  (probably not a good idea on a painted wall, though). It held strong even with stuff in it!

I have a wooden quilt rack and I take off the quilts and hang the stockings with ribbon. I also put garland and lights to decorate it. It works great.

Thanks for all the ideas. I don't have any stairs either so the banister is out. I don't really plan on filling them. They are for decoration purposes only.

I want to start getting ready for Christmas since I will be gone for two weeks during the prep season.

I really do like the shelf with hooks from pier 1.

I have a metal front door. I bought the heavy-duty magnets that are used to hang wreaths and used them for the inside of the door. The stockings were hung from the magnets, and the stockings dressed up the door.

Growing up my mother just hung them on the wall with a small nail... Then Santa took them down filled them up and laid them up on the couch...

Growing up in the military we never had a fireplace it was always either on the wall going the stairs with a small nail then they where placed on the couch or if we didn't have stairs in the hallway leading to the bedrooms and again placed on the couch. It was also the item we where allowed to open before we woke our parents up at the designated time (with fresh brewed coffee ready of course). DH don't have a mantle and they will also probably be hung going up the stairs.

Last year I was remodeling my living room and broke the fireplace apart and hadn't gotten a new one built yet.
I went to the thrift store and bought a coat rack that had 6 pegs on it. It worked out really great. It was very plain, not like the LTD one someone posted a photo of, just a tall wood pole with 4 legs at the bottom and 6 racks.

We had an Ikea peg shelf that we used in our old home. But due to the weight of them filled and me being uncertain if the shelf would hold, our tradition is the kids find them at their place setting at the breakfast table on Christmas morning. They can open their stocking and must eat a quick breakfast before present opening. (Quick breakfast tradition is their pick off the cereal aisle...whatever stuff I don't allow the rest of the year they can have at Christmas. That is on the table as well.)

We have the ornamental hooks that sit on the half wall that goes up the stairs. They are really cute with snowmen and reindeer etc... kind of like a paper weight with a hook. However like the previous poster said, they would never hold up a filled stocking. We lay those out on the sofa and chair for when the kids get up.

last year I bought those mantle hooks they sell them at bed bath & beyond in a set of 4 they are adjustable and awsome,:thumbsup2 very strong found them on ebay for half price free shipping brand new bought 2 packs

We have 2 open archways into our living room. We hang lighted garland around each. On one doorway we hang up cards we receive. On the other, we hang our stocking (me, DH, and our 2 cats) using 3M hooks...I think it looks nice:

I use the weighted stocking hangers and put them on our bookcase. I've never had a mantle to put them on.
