Hands up on ToT?

To me hands up in front of a shot you know will block ppl rates right up there with the stupid silly faces that take from the photo moment as well. All cute to someone doing, but in a photo I may buy for memories it is not. I want to see my children and us, not a big family of Gwiswolds making faces and thinking it is cute to everyone involved.

Maybe Disney should make a rule that instead of enjoying the ride, everyone should sit with their hands neatly folded in their laps, look directly at the camera, and have the perfect Television commercial smile. And everyone shoild wear khaki pants and white shirts, so that nobody clashes. Oh, and only attractive people may ride - it would be a shame to have someone's photo ruined by an uggo. ;)

Is this really what some of you want? It certainly seems so. Look, it's your vacation, and if you want to spend it being irritated because people aren't doing things exactly the way you would like them to, then be my guest. But I really think a lot of the people on the disboards would enjoy their trips so much more if they would just learn to let some things go.

First, I never have seen the point of putting your hands up on this ride. But then I don't get it on rollercoaster either. But on TOT you are very likely to be blocking someones view and their face it the picture. I know have had my view obscured by the person next to me who extended their arms straight out from their shoulders then their forearms upward. Sitting on the back row would not have prevented this.

Ok so no hands up. What about poses? Since we know when/where the pictures are being taken DH and I sometimes like to ham it up for the camera. Nothing naughty, just fun, like flash a peace sign or do bunny ears over each other's heads. Will that ruin your picture, too? I want to know all the rules before we get back to WDW. I don't want to offend anyone. :rolleyes2

Really? Because YOU can't seem to "let it go."
You have made it clear that in order to enjoy a "thrill ride" many people MUST raise their hands. Over and over. Can't we agree to disagree? I think raising one's hands on rides is silly for adults, and sometimes even inconsiderate. You disagree, but even you must have your threshold where another guests behavior begins to irritate you. You just can't accept that other people's threshold might be different?

That's not what I said at all.

Actually, I have said over and over that I don't raise my hands on rides. I don't get why people do it, and it isn't enjoyable to me. But it is enjoyable to many other people and it's been accepted behavior since the invention of the roller coaster.

And of course there are things that other people do that irritate me, but as long as it doesn't go against the spirit of the ride and it isn't actually harmful to anyone, I don't feel that I have the right to expect them to stop doing it. That seems to be the point where we disagree.

Here's another example: People have been eating popcorn in movie theaters for years, but I hate the smell of popcorn. Would it be reasonable of me to expect everyone to stop eating popcorn just because I don't like it? Of course not. So I'm left with two choices: I either suck it up and go see Dark Shadows tomorrow, or I just wait a few months and see it on Netflix.

Exactly. I will be on the Tower of Terror next month, and I'm sure there will be arms flopping around in my face. I am not going to say anything to them, and I will still enjoy the ride. But, if asked for my opinion (as the OP did), I'm going to give mine.

But what if I want a picture of my whole family with their arms raised in traditional "thrill ride pose?" Why is your picture more important than mine. You are right about one thing: everyone does have their own reason. And again, you would definitely have a valid point if raising one's arms wasn't a standard practice for thrill rides, but it is.

I'm not sure about Disney's policy, but I will tell you that if you ever make a trip to Holiday World (which you totally should - it's a great park) and you try that, you will absolutely be thrown out of the park - no questions asked. A woman did that a few years ago and ended up falling to her death from the top of a roller coaster. It was awful.

Why is it okay to potentially ruin someone's photo on splash, but not TOT? I know you said you try not to obscure other's faces, but what if you're unsuccessful?
Nope, not saying anyone's photo is more important than someone else's. Just trying to be considerate.

Holy crow, please tell me you're still playing devil's advocate and didn't really do this. That's all I need is someone taking your advice a step too far and becoming a projectile in my elevator. Frankly this is way more troubling than someone's picture being ruined.
Nope, I really do this. Really? We are talking about a mere inch or two of space......believe me, there is no way under God's blue heaven, that I could possibly slip out from under that space!!! It's merely a bit more room so that your butt actually leaves the seat a bit, rather than being held firmly on that seat. Raising your arms give you no air time, but leaving a very small space does. Geez louise people...it's not as if I had an 8'' thick bag in there...an inch, or so, no more!!!

Best be careful with poses. My friend and I rode EE 14 times in a row one day. It was late in the day, it was drizzly, so people were leaving AK in droves. We headed right to EE, and proceeded to ride continuously for close to an hour. By the 5th or so time, we started getting invention with our photos...choose various poses. well, evidently Disney failed to see the humor of my friend reaching around me, and grabbing my neck..sort of in a choking manne. That photo never made it up and I felt awful. There was a really nice couple, on their honeymoon behind us...they never got their photo. Stupid us!!!!

This is really getting out of hand. In all reality, not too many guests are going to complain if you raise your hands/arms on ToT. There may very well be a few guests who don't get that shot they had hoped for due to those hands in front of their faces. And I'm pretty sure that their vacations won't be ruined. Heck, I have several less than stellar photos of our experiences on WDW attractions...and there are plenty of hands/arms blocking us...but we still bought those stupid photos.

We don't do anything that depicts voilence or suggests naughtiness. :thumbsup2

I have said this before on another thread, maybe Disney should just survey every ticket purchaser and make sure that everyone in each park every day actually feels the same way about everything. I personally don't care how you enjoy the ride as long as it not offensive ( I mean really offensive) most of the time I don't know if I am putting my hands up or not until I'm am in the middle of the ride. So I guess we will see the warning signs change in the future for all rides: Caution people may raise their hands on this ride, if you are going to have a heart attack because your photo is ruined please do not ride. or if you plan to raise your hands on any of our rides you may be ejected from the parks because this seriously decreases our profit made on ride photos, and we may have to shut down the parks due to loss of revenue. I guess we can all just stand at the front of the ride line and ask everyone getting in line if they agree or disagree to our hand raising, and only enter the line once we have enough people to fill a car that agree with us, other than that ride the ride and enjoy it. If the photo is that important maybe you could stand before seated and let everyone know your list of does and don't for riding in the same car as you, but don't complain when the line is longer cause it now takes 5 hours for your ride to start because everyone in your car has a different list. Can't we all just start taking the world a little less serious!

I love it when people in front of me ride with their hands up! Really adds to my photos! So, if you are in front of me - help me out - get your hands up! Thank you.

They can zoom in on just you and your family and crop everyone else out! That's what they did on my ToT pic. :thumbsup2

Awesome pic! I love it a lot!!

wow....dont know what else to say WOW! lol I am sorry this is funny...so along with the other "made up" rules now it is dont put your hands up??? :rotfl2: it is a RIDE not a photo session, the photo is a plus.I am just NOT gonna worry about pictures while on a ride HAVING FUN with my family PERIOD.
also, putting your hands on someone in Florida without their permission is a fast way to get a free night in the local county run hotel! so just say NO. Why would ANYONE let stuff like this take out one minute of your vacation time with your family?:rolleyes2

So if I'm 5'10" and dh is 6'2", we're already "ruining" the photo of any shorter people behind us. Should we always have to wait for the back row. Oh wait, but then those tall people in front of our kids will be blocked by the adults in front of them. New solution - dh & me in the back row, DS in the middle, and DD in the front. I'm sure the CM and people in line behind us won't mind accommodating us, right? Oh, but then we'll be holding up the line, so that's inconsiderate too.

I think I'll stick with my current approach - try to be as aware and considerate of others as I can, apologize when I realize I'd inadvertently been inconsiderate, assume that inconsiderate behavior by others was them being absorbed and unaware in their vacation fun rather than intentional rudeness, and just not sweat the small stuff. Vacations are meant to be fun. I personally can't have fun when I'm that worked up about a ride photo. DH ended up with an entire glass full of ice water in his lap right after we were seated at Le Cellier last trip. Rather than getting upset, we laughed about it. It a much better memory to remember my DH joking about how cold it is in Canada than it would be if my DH had gone all crazy angry about it.

The thing that is really amazing here is the attitude. No one here is saying anyone is going to have their vacation ruined if their ToT photo isn't perfect. But man...the attitudes of those who want to raise their arms is something to behold. Geez.

But heck....everyone is entitled to do pretty much what floats their particular boat. So..have at it.:tiptoe:

Those attitudes actually appear to be coming from both sides, and that's the thing about people we are all different, but compromise needs to come from both sides also. Some people can't ever be happy and everything that happens to them affects them in a negative way, so what do we do?

I don't see it that way at all. I guess we are just looking at the comments from different perspectives. I think alot of people are just amazed that this is suddenly an issue, it seems ludicrous that people are complaining about arms being raised on a thrill ride. Nobody has said that they are going to do whatever they want regardless of how it affects others. what is being said is that this a common and accepted practice, it is being done on what is primarily a thrill ride and not a photo op, and perhaps those who think others should stop a common practice and reduce their enjoyment of the ride because they want to be assured of the perfect photo are being the self absorbed ones.

It was actually someone who was offended by the practice of raising arms on thrill rides that ratcheted up the conversation with a threat of violence. Apparently that is okay though as long as they do it either before or after the picture is taken and not during the photo.

Hmmm, it makes you wonder how much shorter the cues would be without the frustrated return riders trying to get a clean picture.:stir:
