We are bringing my 81 yo DM with us to WDW in a couple of weeks. She has a broken arm and also is able to walk very little so we are going to get a wheelchair for her. Sometimes we'll use the Disney transportation but we'll also have a van rented since we're going to VB after WDW.

Here's my question - if we do decided to drive and she decides she doesn't feel comfortable doing the step up to the tram will we be able to park in the handicap parking area? We don't have a permanent handicap parking permit. I read the FAQ and it said they patrol and ticket if you don't have a parking permit so I wanted to see if there is something temporary that Disney provides.

I agree with Ham Ham. You should be able to get a temporary handicapped permit for her in time for your trip.

In looking at the parking information in the FAQs thread though, I realized it needed an edit to add this information:

All of the parks have handicapped parking available. WDW calls these lots "Medical parking". This is the closest parking area to the park entrance, but may still mean a fairly long walk. The spots that are the closest to the entrance are marked with handicapped signs or with blue paint. Only guests with a valid government issued Handicapped Parking Permit may park in these spots; you can be ticketed if you park in one of those spots without a permit. There are also some spots in the Medical parking lots which are not marked and can be used by people without a Handicapped Parking Permit. CMs also save some spots at the front of the regular parking areas for people with wheelchairs or ECVs who don't have parking permits. Explain your needs to each CM that you come to and they will direct you.

Thanks Ham Ham for the recommendation and link and thanks SueM for the additional parking information.

My mom is actually a resident of MN, but we are going there next week for my work and to see her doctors so I'll check on their requirements. If we can't get anything done while we are there then at least I know we should have another parking option closer to the gate that won't require a tram.

Thanks again! :goodvibes

For Minnesota go here http://www.dps.state.mn.us/dvs/Disability/disability frame.htm and look in the "certificate" section for the hang tag; the "plates" section deals with a specific car.

This way you can have the form printed and filled out and it only needs to be competed by the doctor.
::yes::
We are in Minnesota.
Just to answer a question you have not asked, but will probably think of, she does not need to drive to be able to get a Handicapped parking permit.

I have the form printed out - now to get the Dr. to sign it and get to the DMV in MN. I think this should all be doable next week so we should have a few options at WDW.

Thanks again for all the help!

If she's approved, they will mail the hang tag to you, so you want to get the doctor's signature and get it turned in ASAP.
We just got DD's renewed. My DH took it to one of the DMV licensing stations near us. That made it faster since we didn't have to wait for the completed form to get to the DMV in the mail.

Mission accomplished! Finally had the Dr's appt today at 2:30 and by 3:15 I had the temporary parking permit. The permanent one will be mailed within 30 days but at least we'll be set for FL with the temp one. :thumbsup2

Thanks again everyone!

Does anyone know if this applies to those of us that have a disability parking permit from Canada as well?

I have asked our booking agent, but there a number of things he has yet to get back to us about...

By agreement with the Orange County Sheriff's Office, which patrols the parking lots and can issue tickets, any currently valid handicap tag, whether from a US state, Canadian Province, or UK Blue Badge will be accepted for legal parking in any parking lot at WDW. (This also applies to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, for some parts of WDW.)
