Q: Is there a laundry service?
A: Laundry services are available at your Walt Disney World Hotel and we suggest you take advantage of them if you have a lot of laundry to do during your stay. On board, laundry and dry-cleaning services (with stateroom pickup) are available for a charge. There is also a self-service Guest Laundry Room with coin-operated washers, dryers, detergent and ironing equipment. For safety reasons, irons or steamers may be used in the laundry room only.



As per Disney's rules, steamers and irons are not allowed in the staterooms. They are a huge fire hazard, and although it's possible to get one onboard without having it confiscated, I don't think it's safe to use them.

Do you really want to chance a fire in the middle of the ocean?

However, there's irons in the laundry rooms, so just use those ones! I thought Disney ships had great laundry amenities. Not that I want to spend my whole holiday ironing, but it was nice to be able to press up our formal wear (everything else had been carefully packed, and if it had a few wrinkles, too bad!)

My SIL had one confiscated and her luggage delayed for having one. I'd bring it in your carry-on

I'd suggest not bring one (less hassle) and using DCL's very reasonable rates (50% of the Cleaning rate)

The steamer (or other banned item) will be held until the end of the cruise, at which time you can re-claim it. People who report taking a steamer on board were just lucky--they didn't get caught.

I won't take the chance, so I will leave it at the store. I was planning on sending DH clothes to be pressed, however I have some items I will have to just take care of on day 1
on my own.

I'm sorry to disagree with you, but the quote I included above was from Disney's website. Both irons and steamers are excluded.

I know a lot of people bring them. I considered it myself when we sailed with RCI, as they didn't even have a laundry room. But when a laundry room and a pressing service is available, why would you bother when it's expressly forbidden and is a fire hazard?

We've seen what fires can do on ships - remember the Carnival Splendor in 2010? How about the Star Princess in 2006?. Even though neither of these were caused by irons or steamers, the cruiselines have their reasons for banning them. I'd rather sail without them.

I brought a travel size steamer on the Magic just recently. No problems whatsoever.

My mother's hand held steamer was confiscated on the Magic this past march. She even emailed DCL before she left and was told it was OK. Nothing like clear and consistent guidelines.

I'm glad you didn't take my comment personally - I'm not disagreeing with you stating an opinion, just that the Disney website (the page I was reading anyway!) did include steamers with irons. That's why I posted the link, so no one would think I was just making it up.

I think I may have realised what the issue is here... the site I linked to was a UK Disney site. The US Disney site may have different information (although it bothers me that it would!)

I can't access the US site as my server keeps redirecting me to the UK site.

That's part of the problem with DCL's web site--you can find similar information on several different pages. People can look up an issue and believe that they found THE official information, when in reality there may be another part of DCL's site that includes more info or says something different.

And that doesn't even get into the sites that look official but aren't DCL!

I have been on 9 cruises with DCL(4), NCL(4) & Princess(1). I have brought a travel size iron with auto shut-off (what I was told was necessary by DCL) every time & never had it confiscated out of my luggage, my room stewards have wrapped up the cord for me & set it aside & never said a word. Never had an issue. As long as women are allowed to bring curling irons & hair straighteners on board, I'm bringing my travel iron. I'm an adult not trusted with an iron but teens girls are trusted with hair straighteners?? Same exact technology. Just saying.

I guess it just depends on who is screening the luggage. That is rather odd that the UK site would say something totally different than the US site.

So true! Most of those don't have a shut off feature either.
