hand baggage ban lifted!

Am I the only one who's not happy about this? I was hoping the ban would still be in place when I travel in a few days ! Now I will be eyeing up everyone suspiciously and wondering if they have anything Dodgy in their bags !!!! I felt safer with NO BAGS !

I am with you. I am not happy about this at all. I would much rather know that i am safe and have no hand luggage than getting myself worked up into a frenzy and suspecting everyone as a terrorist. I have a 9 1/2 hour flight with 5 children, does it bother me that they cant bring their toys? No, not at all! These days planes have plenty of entertainment and i am sure as they always do, there will be kids packs on board. These days anything that is needed is available to purchase on board.
I would be happy with no hand luggage, and it is a shame that some people can no longer feel safe to fly.

Just my pennys worth

Quite relieved to hear this as TCD has very little inflight entertainment. Still I know what you mean about being wary of people getting things aboard, I suppose all we can say is that the government and flight authorities must be confident that they can prevent the necessary things getting aboard now or they wouldn't have lifted the ban.

Apparently the BAA airports aren't lifting the ban until 4.30 am tomorrow, this is so that they can train all staff adequately and make sure that everyone is briefed. Manchester is not a BAA (didn't realise), anyone know if the ban is definitely lifted here?

Just checked Manchester Airport website and they have lifted the ban as well http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/web.nsf (hope link works :teeth: ).

SammieG have a great time :goodvibes

Hope everyone has a wonderful time

I second you, triple you etc etc... No more hand luggage ever is fine by me if I am going to get over the sea safely.. why are'nt we making it as difficult as possible for these deluded ....pots.

Little more information coming out now.
If you are flying anywhare apart from the USA, you can purchase goods in the shops after security for consumption aboard your flight.
However, even goods purchased in shops after security which are liquid based CANNOT be taken aboard flights to the USA.

Whilst I support extra security implimentations, I have to say, that the "winners" here will be the airport shops who will do a roaring trade on drinbks and food etc, which people would have brougfht with them before last Thursday and the airlines I imagine will see an increase in sales of on board duty free goods..
before last thursday BAA was trying to reduce the amount of hand baggage due to the security costs involved and the time it was taking to check each piece of luggage. Interesting that now the security threat has been lowered so has the size of the hand baggage...

I understand peoples worries about flying, but please do remember that you have more chance of getting killed getting to the airport than on a flight. How many people have died in road accidents since last thursday? how many people have died on board an aircraft due to terrorism since last thursday?

Will be interesting to see how strictly this is enforced. I just measured my camera bag and it is 4cm too deep, albeit easily within the other two dimensions. Luckily we don't fly for 9 weeks, so will watch with interest.

Thanks for the link to Manchester airport Sadeeyore. WIll have to dig out all chargers, gameboys again etc. As I put them back away last Thursday. We are also going to a funeral today so hectic day.

On sky news they said that the hand luggage still has to be in a transparent bag, is this right? :confused3

Just checked the BAA website and it does say that the bags still have to be clear plastic bags. Or is that just today???

I've read that it won't be lifted until tomorrow. The department of transport said that it could be lifted but the airports have said no. Probably best to contact your airport to confirm.

Does this mean we will be able to take mp3s and camera equipment on as hand luggage. DH has bought me a really expensive camera and lenses for this trip and i don't fancy putting them in a case in the hold. there again we do all want to feel safe when flying.

Seems to be th case Deedee, the only thing is that I think any electrical equipment needs to be removed from its bag to go through the scanners so that the bag does not obscure any part of it.

Typical - have just shelled out for a hard sided camera case to go in the hold! Personally I think these measures will be the norm now, and I think airlines will do everything in their power to ensure passengers comply. I'd rather comply than be refused carriage! Guidance still seems fuzzy, but I have a week to go. Now my concern is how to keep a 14 month old amused for the 6 hour delay without breaking the bank! Maybe by next week, schedules will be a bit closer to normal!

Thats what i was going to buy we don't go for another 5 weeks so i will hold off for now things could change again before then.

Aww is the funeral today? Hope everything goes OK :grouphug:

Looking at what the US homeland has done I am not surprised to see the ban on electronics lifted but ban on liquids remaining. I would love to know how they came up with the new measurements for hand luggage i.e. what if any logic was involved. My rucksack easily fits in the measurements apart from the base where the wheels stick out just too far.

If these sizes are permament it is not going to be good for Heathrow because lots of folk who transit there will use somewhere like Schipol instead.

Changes need to be fairly standard internationally to be effective. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with reducing hand luggage size but I am not convinced what use the latest instructions are.

The new size restrictions seem to be based on a laptop bag dimensions!
Yeah, looking at the Sky News website there is a pic of the Heathrow guy holding what is a large briefcase/laptop bag.

Guess anything is better than nothing.

Still a few restrictions on size and what you can carry (liquids):

Each passenger is permitted to carry one item of cabin baggage through the airport security search point.

The dimensions of this item must not exceed a maximum length of 45cm, width of 35cm and depth of 16cm (17.7"×13.7"×6.2" approx) including wheels, handles, side pockets etc.

Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. All items carried by passengers will be screened by X-ray.

No liquids of any type are permitted through the airport security search point, other than the following items:

  • Prescription medicines in liquid form sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), as long as verified as authentic.
  • Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle or jar must be tasted by the accompanying passenger).

The definition of liquids includes gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, eg toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols etc.

To help their progress through search points, passengers are encouraged not to include items capable of containing liquids (eg bottles, flasks, tubes, cans, plastic containers etc) in their cabin baggage.

All laptops and large electrical items (eg large hairdryer) must be removed from the bag and placed in a tray so that such items neither obscure nor are obscured by the bag.

Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened. Wheelchairs are permitted but must be thoroughly searched. In addition to the above, passengers boarding flights to the US and items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the gate. Any liquids discovered will be removed from the passenger.

Does this mean you can take a bag with the above dimensions plus a small handbag??
