Hanalei Bay Resort, Kauai

Just returned from exchange at Hanalei Bay Resort on Kauai. I would not recommend this resort. While the view, grounds and pool are excellent the accomodations are not up to WDW standards. We had a two bedroom unit which was quite spacious, but was badly in need of updating. Rust on fridge, old stove missing knobs, dirty drapes, mold in bathroom. Just not a well maintained unit.

Also, access to the beach was inconvenient as it was a steep downhill walk. You can get a ride on a golf cart but the one time we called for a ride back to our room we ended up walking as the cart never came. Also, the beach is rocky and there are absolutely no amenities. You have to rent chairs at the pool and carry them to the beach.

In my evaluation to Disney I will recommend they remove this resort from their exchanges.

I have heard numerous complaints about this resort where exchanges are involved. evidently they give the worst units to exchangers. That is a comment I have read many times, not only here on the DIS, but also on other timeshare exchange sites.

We didn't do an exchange to Hanalei Bay, but booked a package deal on a studio room there (Room 2109 - I'll never forget it) for an island hop trip to Kauai from Maui. The room was terrible. It was full of roaches - the roaches even got in bed with us. We made it until 4:00 a.m., and then I got up and dialed the 800 number on my Starwood card and booked a fabulous room at the Sheraton Kauai. We were so glad to leave Hanalei Bay Resort behind -

In all fairness, the grounds were pretty and the view was spectacular, but the upkeep on the inside of our unit was really bad. The roaches were not palmetto bugs, it was an infestation. They were even running across the dishes in the cabinets.

I've seen the resort, many of the rooms are nice. But your experience is becoming an increasingly common one from what I'm seeing, esp for exchangers. I know I've qualified when I somewhat recommended this resort from an exchange standpoint. It's still one of the top choices on Kauai from the exchange list but a second tier option in my opinion, esp if you're giving up the number of DVC points required for an exchange, even in low season.

OMG! I have to hand it to you. I would not have made it until 4 a.m. with roaches in my bed. I'm getting the heebie jeebies thinking about it (and I don't get scared over a bug or two, hey, I lived in NYC for many many years, and you don't get through that without the occasional unwanted critter). Yikes! I definitely could not stay there!
