Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

Hey guys. I had a rough day yesterday and missed my run. I’ve been training for this marathon for about eight weeks now and this was the first run that I’ve missed. My body just wasn’t physically up to it yesterday – I made it as far as the restroom at work to change into my running clothes when I had to acknowledge that I just had to take a day off. It killed me. I really do enjoy my runs and completing each one gives me such an emotional high of accomplishment. But everything was going wrong with me yesterday and despite the fact that I did listen to my body (which I need to do so that I don’t overdo it or injure myself), I still feel seriously guilty for not making my run.

I was to do 4 miles last night and 3 tonight. I’ll do 4 miles tonight and just miss a 3 mile run for this week. I know missing this *one* run is not going to wreck my training schedule, but I really do hate that I missed it. :sad2:

Congrats! to all of you for getting in your mileage yesterday! Great job! I’m very excited about your 5 miles, maroo!!

Adding: 31 days until I run my 1/2 marathon :scared1:

Thanks!

I am so sorry you missed a day...what a bummer when you have made every other one!

But...life happens...hang in there!! :)

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Dolce
I was feeling bad that I am missing my walk tonight and you perked me right up.:thumbsup2

That was funny!! :) So...you ok? You just missing for life, too?

I am trying to figure out the whole dining online thing - I keep getting the error code :confused3

Plus I worked - no internet access - and at home - dh worked real late- so no computer here either!! really limited internet time!!

Dolce If I only learn one thing - its take things one day at atime - dont blame, dont get negative!! Stay on the positive, focus on what you HAVE done - not what you havent!! YOU are going to do AWESOME in your 1/2!! you are on track - its all good!! and I'm so glad that you are posting and encouraging me!!! :wizard:

eeyor/ The rain and the cold here is forcing me indoor!! I took today off - and will hit the gym tomorrow!

I am such a baby...my "cold" is about 50 degrees...:rotfl:

But I did well again today! Went to the gym and used the elliptical. But I was too scared of all of the guys to go do weights. There were a BUNCH of those weight lifting guys over there at the gym...and I am a CHICKEN! So I gotta work on that...or go before 5. :upsidedow

maroo- about guys and weights: 1/2 of them don't really know what the heck they are doing over there. They put on more poundage than they should and grunt and groan and pretend to be He-Man for an hour. I don't do a lot of free weights at the gym (will do some at home) but I'll use some of the machines. I'll just wait until it is free, put it on the lightest weight as I have no desire to build any more muscle than what I currently have - I just want to strengthen what I've already got so I do lower weights with higher rep's. And, I don't always know what the heck I'm doing either - despite that I've previously had a personal trainer. ;) (... and don't get me started on him - I'm uncertain as to who was higher maintenance: him or his g/f who was also a personal trainer at that gym!)

I still didn't get my 4 miles in today! But it wasn't due to the lack of trying. Mother Nature and I got into it and sadly, she won. :sad2: I asked my boss if I could leave work at 4:00 today.... so, yeah, I make it out the door at 4:30. Had I left at 4:00 I would have made all 4 miles. I knew that I was racing against a severe thunderstorm moving in. The drive to the park, I'm heading West and mainly seeing South (don't ask). It's sunny. Arrive at park and finally look North. :scared1: Sun is still shining. I always warm up with a 5 minute power walk (I think I was doing about 11 minute miles) I was praying that I could get in the 4 mile run before the storm moved in. All I could hear off in the distance (that was quickly becoming not quite so distant) was BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! It was thunder. I take off on my run and learned two things:

1) You're not supposed to start out fast! There is a reason for it! I think that I averaged around an 8'5 minute mile for the first 2 miles. I'm normally at a 9'10 minute mile. I began to burn out 1 mile in .. but I kept on going.

2) If you're going to run with a water bottle - use the ones with the sport tops! This was the first time I took a bottle with me (I really never need water until 1 1/2 - 2 hours in - my body is used to working without) I took a bottle today b/c it was so humid due to the cold front/ storm moving in. I unscrewed the cap and it promptly bounced out of my hands (as I was running) and onto the ground. I wasn't about to stop for it! I spent the rest of my run with water from my water bottle sloshing out the top!

I finished the 2 miles and had to pick a different route to start mile 3 as the storm was moving in and I was afraid to go the back loop and be that far away from my car. At one point, I was running along the storm line. I could feel humid warm air, then a gust of freezing cold air, than warm air, cold air. I'd just barely hit mile 3 when the storm sirens began to blare. I created my own shortcut to race back to my car - and I was hauling as it was beginning to rain. I jumped into the drivers seat just as all you know what broke loose. I then had a really scary drive home in torrential rain and high wind gusts. I couldn't see the road at all at times... and I know that there were still people out at the park when this part of the storm hit!!

Edited to Add: Sorry that my story was so long. I hope that you get a laugh out of me trying to beat out Mother Nature. As soon as I landed in the front seat of my car I burst into laughter. I don't feel that it was my most productive run - but it was my most interesting one to date.

Sandy: I was getting the error code as well when I looked at it the other night. I was lurking on the thread about it on the restaurants board - I saw your post over there so I know that you know what I know about it: Disney doesn't know what in the world is going on!! Fingers crossed that when you actually need to be on in order to book your ADR's the online system will be working for you properly.

Thank you so much for your positive motivation. I'm still disappointed about yesterday but I will keep moving forward and I will still do alright.

Tim I actually went thru the 3 "main" Marathon Men - their books, and websites on the first 2 pages of my trip report!!

DH truly loves Hal Higdon's schedule best - he's the most flexible! You could actually follow his schedule and only run on weekends IF you do cardio and strength during the other 4 days!

For instance today I'm only supposed to do 40 min of strength - but since tomorrow its supposed to be "wet" I'll swap and run 3.5 today!

I also had a friend that only trained on weekends - she pushed herself a little too hard because she wanted to meet some Dis WIsh'ers at the Rock and Roll Half - Nashville's heat was INTENSE - but she did it!!

You will be amazed at what you can do!! Just put your mind to it - I didnt really train for '08 (but wasnt as heavy, and in a bit better shape then) I just had the mind set that 13.1 miles was just a day in the parks!! :thumbsup2 Now I'm determined to be an "official finishers" As long as the weather holds, I know I'll be ok - there is something about the actual race day that pumps up your adrenline - thats why the C25K program asks you to join a 5K - as well as any Half, or Full Marathon training - to get a feel for crowds, start lines etc...

Thanks for the info. It all sounds good.. now I need to actually do it!:rotfl: Once I get home I'll need to work off all that 'free' food I'm going to eat!

Hi guys!

I am so excited! :yay:

For the first time EVER...I did FIVE miles! At one time.

Actually...I did stop for a bathroom break. I didn't do it fast...just wanted to make sure I could do it!

Saturday's mileage is 5, too...so I get to do it again in a few days!

Thank you all so much for your encouragement! I was so excited to get on here and tell you guys! :)
Congratulations!!!! Awesome job!:thumbsup2

Keep it up!

GO-GO-GO Everyone! YOu're all doing wonderfully!! Don't worry about days you have to miss. In the grand scheme of things, it really won't matter. It seems to me, you are all very faithful generally speaking. What do they say? Slow and steady wins the race.

Feeling sick today... no fever!! I'd just rather be prone! I plan to go to the gym and do some work!

Maroo those weights and machines are intimadating! But - the machines are user friendly - if you sit in one there is a picture of what muscles are being worked on, and how to - but you really when you check in, just ask for a quick tour of the machines!! That's their job! DO NOT be intimadated - dont let fear stop you from moving forward!!

Work on your legs - the lower body stuff is super easy!! But you'll want to know where the release button is, and how to adjust the seat - esp when you work on the inner and outer thigh machines!! Its a handy lever to know about!! :goodvibes

Also, know that studies have proven that your muscles need a day to recover - so you should only lift weights every other day - or one day lower body, next day upper body!! :thumbsup2

That eliptical machine is HARD work!! For a fat burner - its suggested NOT to use it at all!! Super cardio tho!!

Dolce That is funny about the water bottle, something I might do... except I would avoid the run altogether!! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us - you are really pushing yourself - you must get some joy out of all that you are accomplishing!! Great times!! DH set up his Garmin Watch so I can figure out how far I'm running - my 2 runs have me at a 16 - 17 min mile :rotfl2: Ah well, come Jan I'll be at the front of my corral which should give me a 30 min cushion - and my first mile will be closer to 13 min mile - its a super adrenaline rush!!

<mom voice> PLEASE remember - thunder = Lightening.... Lightening = DANGER! Do NOT put yourself in danger!! <that is all> :goodvibes

Maroo 50 degrees is HOT here!! ;) As long as the sun is shining and the wind isnt blowing of course!! And yes, I'm a baby when it comes to cold!! I HATE running in snow! UGG DH has fashioned a pair of his old running shoes with screws to grip ice so he can run! *sigh, I am SO not looking forward to the snow - Cold I can "Deal with it" (I've run in below zero, just lots of polar tech stuff, over my head, face, hands, etc) Snow :sad2:

Tim see you real soon!! All good wishes are going with you and your family! :wizard:

:dance3:

What is up with everyone getting sick? Is it getting cold up there? Because my FB and Twitter statuses are full of people that are sick. It is barely October?

I actually know how to use the machines...and I don't mind going over there when the place is relatively empty...
But yesterday...it was like a weightlifting convention! :rolleyes1

I actually did the eliptical really slowly...for about 30 minutes (which is by far the longest I have ever been on it) and kept my heart rate below 120. I understand that it is fairly fat burning to do it that way? Am I off here?

And I only do weights one day a week...maybe two.

Today...I think I am going to take a day off. I have to go out of town and I am doing 5 miles tomorrow.

I did fairly well this week! Monday-3 miles; Tuesday-little bit of exercises at home; Wednesday-5 miles!; Thursday-eliptical and Saturday is another 5 miles! That is 13 miles in one week, at least! I am getting there. Not bad for my first real first week! :)

Slow and steady wins the race...I am going for that motto!

Maroo that sounds perfect - you are really getting the miles in - and I truly believe that if you can spend that much time in getting miles - on machines like the eliptical (I think it strengthens the thighs w/o damaging the knees!!) or treadmill - that is POWERFUL!!

Am I the only one that gets bored after 5 min - at 15 min I want to be anywhere else? I try real hard to let my music move me - it does ok most of the time - and I do "switch it up" music wise!!

I hear you about a crowded gym - I wouldnt wait in line for a machine either!!

I'll have to find the info from the trainer about not using an eliptical for fat burning - cardio yes - but you have the heart rate stuff down - so I think you are GOOD!!:cool1::woohoo:

Must go to the library -

had to email dh - I cant text that fast!! and then CHICAGO LOST THE FIRST ROUND in the Olympic bid... secretly I think many people are happy - FEAR of the unknown is rampant!!

Hello
Everyone has been doing great.

Dolce - thanks for the story.

Sandy - are you feeling better now? understand about the cold. I like winter, but hate being cold.

Maroo - great work this week. Can I count your miles?

We are going to New York in the morning. MIL is still hanging on and no one understands why. I think she is waiting for DH and his DB to get there. So, we are going. Plan to be there all week. I should have plenty of time to walk though. Make up for the last couple of days. But.....I understand it is cold up there.

Sandy: I hope that you are feeling better! None of us are allowed to be sick. About your advice on weights (and I, by no means, claim to be an expert on this) From what I was recently told by a personal trainer: Do you upper on one day and do your lower on another. According to him, the avg person thinks that 1 day rest in-between working the same group of muscles is enough (I thought this as well) but he says no. He says that it doesn't give your muscles enough time to begin to build. When you work out on weights you're actually tearing down your muscles. Then when they heal, they reform stronger. His advice was to actually only work each body part on weights once per week (but get in a good work-out). Since he had plenty of muscles; I trust his information. :teeth:

maroo: Good luck on your 5 miles today! :thumbsup2 It should be a piece of cake since you've already done it once this week. I have 6 to look forward to today.

..... Hey, just a little over 1 mile more and you'll be 1/2 to your 1/2 marathon!!

eyor44: Have a safe trip.

Dolce Thanks for the "real" info - - I just read a lot! It's been awhile since I've put myself out there!

eey/Lisa I hope you can check in with us! You'll be in our thoughts and prayers - It must be very hard for your dh and his db! Very emotional time, very stressful... sad... memories will be surfacing! :grouphug: Hang strong! And pack for rain!! Lots of rain, at night it gets down in the 40's, and you cant predict the wind!! Here in Chicago its usually colder than New York, but the rain changes that - it chills you to the bone!!

Maroo :cheer2: GO MAROO GO :cheer2:

according to the PS Calculator - Oct 9 is my 90 days for ADR's! :scared1:

I havent gotten the stupid online thing to recognize my confirmation number!! And according to the other millions of frustrated users, there's not much you can do, but try at 3AM est!

:yay::yay:
OMG OMG CHECK OUT THIS 3 Min video!! A day at MK - fast fwd!! it is so cute!! The last 15 seconds are priceless - you even get a 5 sec full look at Spectromagic!!
http://www.wesh.com/entertainment/21171429/detail.html

Maroo you should share this link with the MAW families - its only 3 min!! :cool1:

Sandy, thanks for sharing that video. It was great!

By the way - what day do you arrive at Disney? I arrive on Jan 8 and cannot make my ADR's until Oct 10.

Awesome video, Sandy! :)

I loved it!

I didn't get anything done today. I didn't know where the group was meeting...for some reason our email telling us where to go did not go out until last night around 11. I was already in bed.

I could have done it on my own today...but just didn't really feel like it.

I am trying to decide if I am sick or what. I don't even feel like getting on the DIS and I have major TR writing to do! I feel really run down?

I have been so busy this week that I am just trying to get some stuff done around the house and actually rest a bit.

I don't even really feel bad for not walking. I guess that may be a bad sign??

Here is my schedule for this coming week:

Sunday: Weights
Monday: 3 miles on treadmill
Tuesday: day off
Wednesday: 5 miles on treadmill
Thursday: bike/abs at gym
Friday: Wii Fit new game!
Saturday: 6 miles with TnT!

Maroo I think you are doing just fine! You do have to try and stay focused but with your work schedule, you needed to be home today - Stay Focused for next week, taking it one day at a time -- but you've made a good plan!! Plan to succeed!!

We are going to arrive Jan 7 - I dont know why I thought Oct 4 was my adr day? :confused3

My week's schedule"

Sunday 5 miles
Monday rest, stretch and strengthen
Tuesday 4 miles
Wednesday 2 miles run or cross-train
Thursday 4 miles + strength training
Friday rest
Saturday 40 minutes cross-training
Sunday 6 miles

You are ALL doing great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maroo, just go in there girl and do the weights. I agree most of them are morons banging the stuff around anyways. I don't like it when it's crowded either but just go for it!

WTG everyone.

:thumbsup2 Impressive schedule!

I did see Jan hours but it didn't make much difference to me. I already know which parks that I want to be in on which day - but I'm only going to be there for a few days vs a nice vacation like you are.

It's fun to see the comraderie being built around this event and your schedules. You are all in together!! I love seeing friendships being formed and you getting healthy and fit!!

Great job everyone!

Leisa Be careful, we may suck you in yet!! ;) What are you doing in 2011?

My body is old today! creakin and a moanin - BUT I get to go to work and earn some money to give to Disney! :cool1:

ADR time nears, so I'm trying to tweak the schedule. I believe we will take on a tour - Wild By Design looks like our choice. It will be hard to top last year's tour of Mickey's Milestone Tour esp knowing that Toon Town as we know it will no longer exist... Where will they put Mickey's House? Where will the meet and greet for Mickey and Minnie be? Doesnt Disney know we are planners here?? :confused3

eeyor44/Lisa Just want you to know we're thinking of you - surrounding you in positive thoughts and prayers - hope you find peace and some time for yourself!! :grouphug:

Well...another day...another nothing.

Long story very short. I didn't get to do weights yesterday.

I am so tired. Very tired.

But I am going to walk today. It may not be fast, but I am going straight home and getting 3 miles in while I watch old episodes of Alias. I want to watch them and I told myself I can only watch them when on the treadmill. So how is that for some motivation.

On related news...I am very frustrated about my TnT stuff right now. The fundraising part is frustrating. Not the actual fundraising...but the process to do the fundraising. I was sent an email about an important meeting on the night before. After I went to bed. And now it doesn't look like it will be rescheduled?

But...I am going to continue training with you guys. I am just afraid that I won't actually be on the half course with you??? :sad1: Should I sign up for the 5K? Is it worth the money?
