Hey,guys! Just a little over 2 months until the big day. Let's get
moving!!
Where is everyone at training-wise? I just flew back in from Boston yesterday. My schedule was all out of whack this last week because of the cruise. I took a 5 night New England cruise and then spent 2 days in Boston. Because I wasn't physically able to run last Sat I had to move my long run to Sunday. I then skipped my Monday's 3 mile run to recover and then pushed up my normal Wed-Thurs back to back to a Tues-Wed back to back. That left me with the two days in Boston with no running. So that, combined with the fact that I probably gained about 10lbs due to all of the eating on a cruise ship (!) plus the flight home - my 11 mile run began a little rocky yesterday. I flew home from Boston in my running clothes and was picked-up from the airport and taken directly to my park that I train at. Yup - call me crazy but I wanted those 11 miles
done!
So, here is the lesson that I'm learning - especially now that I'm beginning to run double-digit miles. (oh-my-gosh! I never thought I'd ever run a double digit mile!!

)
It's all mental. Seriously, it's a mental thing that keeps you from training or wanting to do the distance. It's not a physical thing. If you train properly, your body can do it. Yesterday in Mile 1 I tried to talk myself out of the run. I had all of these excuses - I'd just freakin' gotten off an airplane! My body didn't need to be doing all of that running! I should just go home, rest and then do the 11 miles on Sunday (today).

Excuses.. excuses.. excuses...
My body was fine to run those miles. I just didn't want to do it. 11 miles ... while in Mile 1 that is a very daunting thought. So, I played mental games with myself. At my park 1 loop = 2 miles so I decided that I would make it a full 3 loops and then decide if I want to bail on the run or not. After all, 3 (loops) doesn't sound so bad - right? Don't think about how 3 loops is really 6 miles. Just think how low of a number 3 is. So, I was mentally able to brace myself for 3. I could do 3.
Well, I'd eaten a sandwich while waiting to be picked-up from the airport so at Mile 4 I was still too full from the sandwich to want to take the electrolytes. Yesterday I was trying out GU Chomps. Mile 7 would be the first mile to take the Chomps so I had to keep running after I hit Mile 6 b/c I wanted to see what the Chomps tasted like. (I didn't like them. I had the strawberry flavor and first bite they were fine but they had some sort of funky aftertaste. Yuck! I'm sticking with the Cliff Blocks - those taste good!)
Well, Mile 7 is in the back part of the loop so I had to keep running back to the start if I wanted to quit but then I'd hit Mile 8 and it'd only be one more long loop out and then I'd just take a different short 1 mile loop to complete the 11 miles. I mean ...
one more long loop? I could do that! So by the time I came back around from that last long loop I was at 10 miles and then I could change my route for 1 more measly mile. Just
one more mile? No big deal!
To be honest: By the time I hit 6 miles I knew that I'd make it. By the time I hit the 1/2 point I can finally relax in my run enough to not focus on it. I'll let my mind drift and then my body just keeps running - it is physically fine to do the running. It is my mind that holds me back each and every time. So, I'm playing these mental games with myself until I finally hit the point to where I can relax, forget about running and just let my body take over. It really is mind over matter. I highly recommend that you guys develop your own mental games when you're struggling through a training session. If you mentally can break down your milage, like I did yesterday, I know that you can work through it.
So, this next Sunday. One week from today!

Will be my first official race: a 1/2 marathon. I'm going to run with a pace group and hopefully can keep up! I ran those 11 miles at under a 9 1/2 minute mile pace and that was an "off" run yesterday that I really struggled with for the first few miles. Hopefully Sunday's run will not be "off" and it'll be a good run. I think that I'll run with the group that plans to complete the 1/2 marathon in 2 hrs 10 minutes which is aprox a 9'54 minute mile. So - we'll see how I do! I'm already getting nervous!!
Oh- and I found out some good news yesterday. My mother was planning to surprise me but then had to spoil the surprise b/c she had some questions to ask me about it: She's going to the Disney marathon to watch me run!

I'll actually have a family member there to cheer me on!!

One of her best friends moved to Orlando not long ago so she's going to fly into Florida on Sat, Jan 9 and stay with her friend for two nights. I wont see her until Sunday, Jan 10. She originally planned to not tell me at all and just show up at the marathon! Now I'm going to change my Ohana dinner reservation for the 10th so I can celebrate completing the marathon with my mother! She'll leave the next morning. I'm so excited that she's coming!
Sandy: questions for you: To watch me run I told her that she should go to the MK to line up on Main Street and then later go over to EPCOT to the finish line. They have bleachers set up over there. So, I'm trying to figure out how this will all work out. You were on Main Street on Marathon day last year - right? To watch your husband? What time do they let the people in to watch for the runners and how does that work? She does plan to purchase a park ticket and I think that she should hang out at the MK for an extra hour or so to ride some of the rides before she moves over to EPCOT to wait for me to finish. Will she enter to just watch the runners on a park ticket or do they allow people in to watch and then kick them out to ready for park opening? I also think that she should pay and park at the MK and then take a Disney bus over to EPCOT since road traffic will be insane that day. Is the finish line a great distance away from the EPCOT park busses? Any info that any of you can provide will be helpful! Thanks!
