Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

I did 30 minutes of strength training and walked the dog for about 1.5 miles tonight. :goodvibes

anyone else?

Where is everyone?:confused3 Did you all start a new thread or something?

I, um, did 2 miles last night..........

I did 4 miles last night and I might add it was 57 degrees. Gotta get ready for that January weather.

That's what I tell my boss! He is much easier to deal with since he started using it.

Thank you and you will consider joining us when you return to the states?

I am so sorry!

I actually gave an update on the "strangers" trip thread. But I forgot to post one over here.

The news about Lauren was not good. But the update was REALLY long...

Are you reading that other TR? I thought most of Lauren's peeps were on that TR too...I apoligize for not getting back to you on this!

I Zumba'd :)

What is that??

What is that??

A Zumba workout mixes body sculpting movements with dance steps derived from cumbia, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, hip hop, mambo, rumba, flamenco, and calypso and Salsaton. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms. It targets areas such as the glutes, legs, arms, abdominals, and the heart. A Zumba class is typically not formulaic in that instructors often add on their own music choices and choreographies to make their class presentation locally unique.

Apparently next week we are adding flamenco and jive to the current line up....

Im still here. Just got off a cruise ship this morning and am in Boston for a couple of days before I fly home. For the most part, I got my runs in this week. I wasn't in any condition to run my 9 miles last Sat so I moved that run to Sunday. I ran the 9 miles on the ship's jogging track. 6 laps = 1 mile. I'm not used to track running & ran in the same direction for too long. I pulled a calf muscle. I did complete the run and then hobbled into the Spa where I had a 30 minute calf massage that worked it all out. The girl managed to work out the muscle and the leg is fine - thank goodness! I skipped Monday's 3 mile run to rest from Sunday's 9 mile. I ran 5 miles on Tuesday and 3 miles yesterday. I fly home Sat & have to run 11 miles after I leave the airport. I run my 1/2 marathon not this Sunday but the next one.

I'm not caught up on this thread. I'm on my iPhone & have only viewed the posts on this last page. Glad to hear that Sandy is doing great but haven't read the posts that she made.

Maroo: still praying that your sleep study test results turn out alright. I think that I told you that my mother has sleep apenia. I don't know what is going in with Lauren as I don't know which thread you made those posts on but I hope that things will turn out alright.

Eyore: talk to me about running in the cold. :) This Texan did her 9 mile run on the top deck of a ship off the coast of Portland Maine in 34 degree temps. I didn't mind as I'm trying to train in all types of weather so that hopefully nothing bothers me at WDW on race day.

I'll try to catch up on this thread when I return home this week-end. Is there another thread going on? If so, could someone give me a link please?

Dolce
good to hear from you. Guess I missed you were going on a cruise. Way to go on getting your runs in on the ship. You beat me on the cold weather. I tried walking in the rain last night with the same thought. I know the races will go on in the rain if there is no lightening. Roo (my dog) didn't have the same thoughts I did. She hates the rain, so we didn't get very far.

No new thread, just me being paranoid that everyone had left me. Maroo is talking about one of her many trip report threads, the one where she is meeting up with a bunch of strangers for what sounds like a fabulous trip.

Maroo,
Yes, I am caught up on the other thread. Will continue to pray for Lauren, William and the whole family.

Zumba sounds like a lot of fun. wish I was coordinated (and brave) enough to join a class like that.

Leisa
I don't get the shoes comment either. :confused3 Does eandesmom dance in some funky shoes or something?

Sandy
How are you doing today?

Oh NOOOO! here we go with shoes again! :lmao: Cynthia, you temptress you! :rotfl2:

what shoes??
what did I miss???

:rotfl2: I think Liesa is referring to a post on Jordan's thread related to shoes....somehow his posting of needing new workout shoes reminded me I needed Zumba shoes.

While you don't "need" special shoes, you really want to use a really worn down running shoe or a cross trainer, basically something that has support but very little tread. Otherwise you "stick and squeak" while doing the dance moves and you could actually hurt yourself if you aren't careful. Beacuse I don't run, my gym shoes are in great shape (so I "stick") and my other low tread shoes just don't have enough support. I tried them and actually cracked a couple of toenails, I think doing Bollywood!

So I broke down and ordered an inexpensive pair and tried them out for the first time last night. They were good but I wore the wrong socks and have mini blisters, I need to use a thinner sock. Overall I think they were a good buy!

I'm not all that coordinated, or brave. I look ridiculous but so does everyone else! My friend just got certified and started teaching and so I went to support her. I haven't taken a class other than pilates, in probably 20 years! But I am enjoying it quite a bit and am getting better. At least until she does a new dance.

:dancer:

At her class. Last night I went to a different one and WOW was it different. My friend really focuses on positioning, the steps and really maximizing the workout so you get a lot of strength training which I love.

The class last night was a party...non stop dancing for an hour. I was a complete spaz but it was fun! Great cardio. The best part was we did Thriller! I haven't laughed so much while working out in a really long time,. the hour felt like 15 minutes. It's a hard night for me to get to that class but I'm going to really try to get there more, it's a great compliment to my friends class.

Hey,guys! Just a little over 2 months until the big day. Let's get moving!!

Where is everyone at training-wise? I just flew back in from Boston yesterday. My schedule was all out of whack this last week because of the cruise. I took a 5 night New England cruise and then spent 2 days in Boston. Because I wasn't physically able to run last Sat I had to move my long run to Sunday. I then skipped my Monday's 3 mile run to recover and then pushed up my normal Wed-Thurs back to back to a Tues-Wed back to back. That left me with the two days in Boston with no running. So that, combined with the fact that I probably gained about 10lbs due to all of the eating on a cruise ship (!) plus the flight home - my 11 mile run began a little rocky yesterday. I flew home from Boston in my running clothes and was picked-up from the airport and taken directly to my park that I train at. Yup - call me crazy but I wanted those 11 miles done!

So, here is the lesson that I'm learning - especially now that I'm beginning to run double-digit miles. (oh-my-gosh! I never thought I'd ever run a double digit mile!!)

It's all mental. Seriously, it's a mental thing that keeps you from training or wanting to do the distance. It's not a physical thing. If you train properly, your body can do it. Yesterday in Mile 1 I tried to talk myself out of the run. I had all of these excuses - I'd just freakin' gotten off an airplane! My body didn't need to be doing all of that running! I should just go home, rest and then do the 11 miles on Sunday (today). Excuses.. excuses.. excuses...

My body was fine to run those miles. I just didn't want to do it. 11 miles ... while in Mile 1 that is a very daunting thought. So, I played mental games with myself. At my park 1 loop = 2 miles so I decided that I would make it a full 3 loops and then decide if I want to bail on the run or not. After all, 3 (loops) doesn't sound so bad - right? Don't think about how 3 loops is really 6 miles. Just think how low of a number 3 is. So, I was mentally able to brace myself for 3. I could do 3.

Well, I'd eaten a sandwich while waiting to be picked-up from the airport so at Mile 4 I was still too full from the sandwich to want to take the electrolytes. Yesterday I was trying out GU Chomps. Mile 7 would be the first mile to take the Chomps so I had to keep running after I hit Mile 6 b/c I wanted to see what the Chomps tasted like. (I didn't like them. I had the strawberry flavor and first bite they were fine but they had some sort of funky aftertaste. Yuck! I'm sticking with the Cliff Blocks - those taste good!)

Well, Mile 7 is in the back part of the loop so I had to keep running back to the start if I wanted to quit but then I'd hit Mile 8 and it'd only be one more long loop out and then I'd just take a different short 1 mile loop to complete the 11 miles. I mean ... one more long loop? I could do that! So by the time I came back around from that last long loop I was at 10 miles and then I could change my route for 1 more measly mile. Just one more mile? No big deal!

To be honest: By the time I hit 6 miles I knew that I'd make it. By the time I hit the 1/2 point I can finally relax in my run enough to not focus on it. I'll let my mind drift and then my body just keeps running - it is physically fine to do the running. It is my mind that holds me back each and every time. So, I'm playing these mental games with myself until I finally hit the point to where I can relax, forget about running and just let my body take over. It really is mind over matter. I highly recommend that you guys develop your own mental games when you're struggling through a training session. If you mentally can break down your milage, like I did yesterday, I know that you can work through it.

So, this next Sunday. One week from today! :scared1: Will be my first official race: a 1/2 marathon. I'm going to run with a pace group and hopefully can keep up! I ran those 11 miles at under a 9 1/2 minute mile pace and that was an "off" run yesterday that I really struggled with for the first few miles. Hopefully Sunday's run will not be "off" and it'll be a good run. I think that I'll run with the group that plans to complete the 1/2 marathon in 2 hrs 10 minutes which is aprox a 9'54 minute mile. So - we'll see how I do! I'm already getting nervous!!

Oh- and I found out some good news yesterday. My mother was planning to surprise me but then had to spoil the surprise b/c she had some questions to ask me about it: She's going to the Disney marathon to watch me run! I'll actually have a family member there to cheer me on!! One of her best friends moved to Orlando not long ago so she's going to fly into Florida on Sat, Jan 9 and stay with her friend for two nights. I wont see her until Sunday, Jan 10. She originally planned to not tell me at all and just show up at the marathon! Now I'm going to change my Ohana dinner reservation for the 10th so I can celebrate completing the marathon with my mother! She'll leave the next morning. I'm so excited that she's coming!

Sandy: questions for you: To watch me run I told her that she should go to the MK to line up on Main Street and then later go over to EPCOT to the finish line. They have bleachers set up over there. So, I'm trying to figure out how this will all work out. You were on Main Street on Marathon day last year - right? To watch your husband? What time do they let the people in to watch for the runners and how does that work? She does plan to purchase a park ticket and I think that she should hang out at the MK for an extra hour or so to ride some of the rides before she moves over to EPCOT to wait for me to finish. Will she enter to just watch the runners on a park ticket or do they allow people in to watch and then kick them out to ready for park opening? I also think that she should pay and park at the MK and then take a Disney bus over to EPCOT since road traffic will be insane that day. Is the finish line a great distance away from the EPCOT park busses? Any info that any of you can provide will be helpful! Thanks!

Dolce AWESOME! and you are so right - Mind game Mind Game MIND...

Its so hard to explain!

I think having your mom park at MK and then take the monorail over to Epcot is perfect!

I would ask over at the event/comp board to be sure - if she is driving - 7am those roads are going to be closed due to all the runners... How about hmmm

I've never driven, so its hard for me to say - but do keep in mind the roads close!!

I'll do some searching and get back to you on that - but yes, I was at MK watched DH come into the MK from Mainstreet - ran over to the castle to watch him come out of the castle - then jumped on the monorail to epcot (I didnt use a ticket to get inside the MK)

then I sat and waited, and waited at epcot! I easily couldve rode a few rides... I was just anxious and didnt want to miss him- I sat on the flower area on the walkway to World Showcase - when I saw him run by, I then high tailed it to the bleacher area -

got inside and wandered to the meet place - I will admit I got confused trying to figure out where to enter and all!!

and dont worry about adding her to your adr!! It will all work out fine - and she's welcome to join us at Cape May too!!

Here's a great Spectator tool - not sure "how" you are supposed to get to the places to view the runners!! Map is included here too!
http://disneyworldsports.disney.go.com/dwws/en_US/marathon/spectator/detail?name=SpectatorDetailPage

I clicked on the + and the viewer transportation was part of that!!
"Mile 26.2 Viewpoint
After your runner has passed by walk back to the monorail platform and ride the monorail to the Transportation and Ticket Center. Exit that monorail and walk down the ramp. Follow the overhead signs to the Epcot® monorail and ride that monorail to Epcot®. Upon arriving at Epcot® walk down the ramp and exit to your left towards the parking lots. Walk to the Imagine lot on the right."

I can tell you I now remember that I did go from the MK over to the Beach Club - by Hurricane Hannahs is where another group of WISH scream Teamers hang out - I didnt wait for dh to pass here - I just walked over thru the International Gateway - I think!!

Here's a pdf file Map link:

Dolce Congrats on the double digit run! That is a huge milestone. And wishing you lots of good luck in your half next weekend. By the time we get to January you're going to be up with the elites;)

As for me I did a 6 miler this weekend in 68 minutes. I felt pretty good about that. Almost halfway to 13!

Always remember it's just one foot in front of the other:goodvibes

Just checking in to say good morning to everyone! WOW! Some of you are making great strides! Double digit runs- now that's something!! Excellent job everyone.

Dolce - Way to go!:cool1: You are doing great! You are so right about the mind thing. I went out to do 8 miles yesterday, but it was cold :cold: and I tried to talk myself out of going before I even got out of bed. But I went, had shorts on, but had a jacket. I figured I would warm up pretty quickly. NOPE!:sad2: The whole first two miles I was really wishing for pants and planning to get to Penneys as soon as possible to purchase some. By the end of mile two I decided to just do six miles. I would be happy with six. Then I got to six and was like, well, I'm doing good, I'll just keep on as long as I can. (had visions of nine :rolleyes1) By seven and half, I was hungry, not so cold any more, but I was hungry. I had water that I grabbed every once in a while, but the last time I tried to eat something while walking, it didn't work out too well. So, I made it to eight, :woohoo: and then quit. Felt good about that. But when I checked my time, I did 12 minute miles.:confused3 Guess I was so cold that I was really moving. Plus there wasn't anyone there to get in my way, I could go straight down the middle of the track. One guy did show up at mile three and was there through mile five and half.

I would also recommend your mom use the monorail instead of the buses to get from one park to the other. Might take the buses a while to get around. How wonderful she is coming! That's a great surprise.

Here's a thought. Maybe she could park at Epcot and take the monorail to MK? Do you think it might be easier to park at Epcot than MK?

Dismagiclover - Way to go on getting those six miles in. And your time is great!

eandesmom - zumba class sounds like a lot of fun.

Sandy- I hope everything is well and you had some running time this weekend! I actually ran 2 miles at the gym on Friday! I'm going this morning too, so I'm shooting for that again. Going only 2 days a week (mon & fri) I think I need to squeeze in another day. I might make 4 miles by December 1st my goal.

Great job everyone with the running!!!!!:dance3:

Dolce- Congrats on the run!!!! Hope you had a great time on the cruise!

eyor44- 8 Miles!! NICE!! I hope to be able to run this someday!

Dolce - You are so right! You are doing a great job and it does all seem to be a mind game. I can't believe you are so close to your first 1/2! :woohoo:

Lisa - Great job!!!! 12 minute miles!! Wow.

Sandy - Did you see the October half announced?

What do you guys think about the October half? I would like to do it...but maybe as a relay? That may be a cop-out...but I am doing fairly well doing 6 or 7 miles. :rolleyes1

I am IN for the Princess Half! Room is booked. Airline ticket is purchased! I am ready to roll! Anyone want to join me?

I am hoping for sleep study results today!

Dismagiclover: Great job on your 6! :thumbsup2

Eyor: Awesome job with your 8!! I'm glad that you stuck it out!! Getting into upper mileage, take some Cliff Blocks with you. I feel like a dork while training, but now on my long runs I do have water and Cliff Blocks. I take 2 blocks at mile 4, 2 blocks at mile 7, 2 blocks at mile 10 ... and doing a 1/2 marathon - you don't need anymore than that. (oh, and I eat something, like a Nutragrain bar, within the hour before my run) It will make a difference in your training. You will have more energy to continue on and you won’t feel hungry. I’m the only one out at my park running with anything, but it’s helping me to make my goals for that day. During Saturday’s run, I passed by two other runners (I think they were a couple) both doing upper mileage. The female told me in passing that she was trying for 18 miles that day. I assume that was the male’s goal as well. They’re running a full marathon in about 4 weeks. Neither was carrying anything on them (I guess they could have had water stashed along the route at places – but I never saw anything stashed nor did I ever see them drinking/eating anything). As I was stretching out after my run, the male passed by me. He was finished with his run and was at a walk. I called out to ask him how many miles he got in and he, in a ticked off voice, stated that he only got in 17 before he “crapped” out. (His words). He was upset as he’s supposed to work up to 22 miles within the next couple of weeks. I didn’t ask, but I did wonder if he was properly fueling (cliff blocks, GU, chomps, ect..) and hydrating. If he wasn’t, that was probably his reason for not making all of his miles on Saturday. So, next long run/walk – take something with you. Begin practicing where you’re going to take it on race day (example: Mile 4 is where I start with the Cliff’s but your body may need you to begin at Mile 3 or something. You are supposed to begin taking that stuff before you feel that your energy is spent or that you’re hungry – you’re building up so that you’re never feeling that you’ve spent all of your energy.) Figure out at what mile your body needs it. I’ve found that the Cliff Blocks taste the best to me but try a couple of different things. On one long run day try Cliff Blocks, on another try either the “jelly beans” or GU. It was advised to me to only try one product at a time so that you can see which one really works the best for you. If you use both the Cliff Blocks and the GU during the same run, you won’t know if one was more effective in your energy levels than the other.

Maroo: I won’t be doing the October ½. It’s still during tax season (I can’t get any time off until after the Oct 15 deadline each year) Also, TOO HOT!! I’m not running a ½ in hot FL weather. I’ll just stick to January. :teeth:

Sandy: Thank you for the advice on how my mother should handle things that morning. I didn’t think about the monorail but that would be better than a bus because of marathon traffic and road closures that morning. I think that I will go ahead and advise her to park at the MK. She’ll have a park ticket for that day so I will just need to find out the time she can enter the MK to watch for the runners. It won’t matter if she needs her ticket to get in or not. I’m then going to advice her to stay at the MK for park opening and enjoy a couple of rides before getting on the monorail and going to EPCOT. I’ll then advise her to try to find a spot in the bleachers and wait for me to finish. Right now, I hope to finish the marathon within 5 hours. That’s my goal.

How is your training going? Doing any miles today? I have to fight rain (again) and do 4 miles after work tonight.

Look at you runners GO!

Very impressive everyone, sounds like it was a good running weekend all around.

Maroo I hope those results come in today!

Tim Thanks and Way to go! By starting now, you will definitly be ready to join us next year. :thumbsup2

Dolce Thanks for all the info. How do you carry your stuff? At one track there are benches along the way and I leave my water bottle either on one of them or on my car if I can park close to the track. At the other two, I have taken a small wooden chair to put by the track with my stuff. (no one else is there to be bothered) I am going to look fo rhte cliff blocks. I tried looking for the jelly beans, but haven't been able to find them. Guess I need to go to a health food store? I have started trying to figure out when I need nourishment along the way.

October shouldn't be too hot for a marathon. Especially at night. Now humidty, that's something else. There will be plenty of that to go around and the Northerners may have a bit of a problem with it.

Maroo - Thanks! I'm glad you and Lisa are going to do the Princess. I remember you would pretty bummed when she dropped out of January. How is her leg doing?

I so want to do the Princess, but just won't be able to swing it with work. I tell you, work really gets in the way sometimes.

Sandy - Hi:wave2:
