Hey all! Remember me? the one who hasn't posted in several weeks bc work has driven her crazy? I'm so sorry to have not been so much of a team player this past month, but, like LB, someone has left work; and instead of hiring someone else, they just dumped all her work on top of my own on me and I had two HUGE projects due last week that literally kept me doing overnights like I was in college again. Hopefully things won't be too bad. and on top of it, I ran not one but two race these past seven days and was happy with them both - the boilermaker you guys knew about (and I'll TR it in a moment), but at the last minute, literally overnight, I decided to run one on the fourth of july bc my neighbor, who was going to, decided not to the night before bc she hadn't trained for it so she gave me her bib. Looking back, although I got a PR for the four mile race (Saratoga Firecracker Four) by about two minutes, it prob was a mistake to run it bc it was WAY too hot (the race didnt' start until 9 and was in the high 80's) and people were dropping like flies and it really got my spirit down bc I felt so miserable the entire race from the heat. People were dropping like flies and thankfully they were prepared with a lot of ambulances. I do have to say though, they had a ton of water stops and misters and even had either a band, bagpiper or singer with a microphone every 1/8 mile so the entertainment and spectators were great.
So then the next four days I was petrified about my planned Boilermaker race bc I kept thinking, if I felt that bad for four miles, how am I going to make it 9.3 miles? TG I got a PR though bc I think if I hadn't, I may have skipped out on the Boilermaker - and TG I didn't bc it was the MOST fun race and post-race party I have EVER been too and sorry folks, but it even beat disney!
The race started for me yesterday at 3:45 am when I got up to get ready. My local running group rented two buses to take us to Utica (hour and a half away) for the race. We got our goody bags which included really nice beer steins which they give instead of shirts - nice bc how many shirts do I really need? Okay, a lot! anyway, It was nice not to have to worry about driving and my longtime friend came with me.
Bus left the parking lot at 5 am and we were off - everyone was in good spirits but I admit I was still worried bc of the race a few days earlier and so was my friend who ran it with me. We got there about 6:45 am and the race didn't start until 8 - we used the portapotties which weren't dirty yet, talked to many of the other 13,998 people who were running and met up with another friend of mine -the one who got me running in the first place for disney - who also "borrowed" the bib of a friend who decided literally the night before not to run. now, my friend was lucky bc this race opened up in january and literally filled up with 14,000 people in only six weeks -it was a record for it!
anyway, one surprising thing (and surprising even to my friend's husband who is a meteorologist!) was that it was cloudy - totally unexpected but VERY nice. so I was feeling less worried bc knew the sun was not going to be beating down on me for awhile at least. and the gun sounds - POW! and I'm still standing, and standing, and standnig and hearing the announcer say 1 minute, 38 seconds, 2 minutes 17 seconds and still not moving - finally started moving about 3:38 seconds but didn't even cross the start line until four minutes after the race started - don't worry, chip time.
said goodbye and good travels to my friends (as we all run different paces) and would meet them at the end and started to enjoy the run. I had my music but didn't even need it, as I'm not kidding you, there was not a single space with a lack of spectators the entire 9.3 miles. I've never seen anything like it. and not only spectators, but spectators who were involved with either words of encouragement, signs, hoses, misters, passing out ice, water and even passing out popsicles and full bottles of gatorade! and the official water stops you ask? there were 21 water stops for this 9.3 miles race - that's more than disney has for teh 1/2! I never felt dehydrated bc of all of them. and every 1/4 mile had some sort of entertainment, band,

dancers

, singers

(even nikki third place finisher first season of AI!), etc. and I saw a young boy in full batman regalia giving high fives - I gave one to him in honor of my four year old isaac who wore his batman costume 68 days in a row last year - my friend even asked me if I saw this batman boy bc it made her think of isaac!
at mile 4 was THE HILL - the one I had been hearing about - the golf course hill that EVERYONE talked about how bad it was. and although the elevation was high, I was shocked how NOT bad it was. I had worse hills in my 1/2 in april which I didn't know about -this one I was expecting to be bad, but it wasn't - yes, it was high, but the elevation was so long and so slight (to me anyway) that it wasn't bad to feel. and for me, the hater of hills to say, is something. and the interesting thing about this hill was it was curved. so before I got to the hill, I could see the ton of people ahead of me up really high from me running in the opposite direction, and all I could think was OMG, how did they get up there? what the heck is this hill going to be like? but then to see it and to see the curve so large that it was prob a 30 degree angle intead of of the 45 I was expecting, shew a relief. and then being on top of the hill and seeing the THOUSANDS still running behind me, I must admit gave me a nice boost.
then the popsicle, yum the popsicle - the world's BEST way to run and keep hydrated - there is a woman who for years has been "kelly's popsicle stand" with signs and all - who was passing out popsicle, after popsicle after popsicle - can't imaging whant this must cost her as she just does it herself. boy did that orange taste good -I used another word on FB but it is not DIS approved!
the sun came out in full force at mile 6. Then at mile seven a guy on his own was passing out full cold bottles of gatorade - I told him I loved him when he gave me one and he told me he loved me back!
then it was all downhill from there - in a great way, not bad! everyone was so nice and happy the whole race. and the last 1/2 mile was literally downhill to the finish line at the brewery! I saw that I was probably going to beat my previous time of my Cohoes 15k in may, but it's hard to figure it out when you also know you were behind by about 4 minutes. When I crossed, it was just about 1:44 and seconds but I hoped it meant I PR's (and when I looked this morning, I did! - by 4 minutes, 12 seconds - I got 1:39:41

) anyway, as I crossed the finish line, got to high five our US Senator Chuck Schumer; got my finisher's pin and then waited for my friend.
Once she was done not too shortly after me, we went to find beer? no Popsicles - OMG love them! and hadn't had one in more than ten years, I don't think! Enjoyed blue this time and then went to look for my marathoner friend and her family. We found them very smartly in the shade right next to the Saranac Blueberry summer ale truck and went to get our beer! I am so impressed the kept the beer flowing for over three hours with 19,000 runners and friends bw the 5k and 15k and we never waited in line long for our beer - five minutes tops. There was a great band playing - food I think (didn't really get to that) and went from saying before race that I would NEVER be able to drink beer after running

to drinking four ice cold drafts!

and honestly, the only reason I stopped was bc I was full. The community atmosphere was really spectacular - everyone happy and talking and dancing, etc.
The party ended around 12:30 pm and then we went to our bus to take us home - yes, I napped most of the way!
So yes, I would recommend this race to ANYONE and if you are anywhere near here, I would sign up! now the thing about this race is that signup is in january and this year, it closed at the end of february - a new record - you wouldn't think 14,000 people would close up so fast - but it did! so come to utica and race and drink beer!
