Hakuna Matata - Movin' on to March

Rick: Thanks for the link. I have not been touched by this disease (Thank you Lord), but so many have. I will make sure to forward this on to some of my family and hope that they can help support. I don't like doing these kinds of things online though. Could you PM me a way to send a check?

Information and the form for sending donations via check can be found on my blog site at http://rickpeete.squarespace.com/my-avon-walk. You will need to print out the PDF form, fill it out completely, and mail it in along with your check.

Thank you and everyone for your support! :thumbsup2

Tandy: Hoping and praying for good news for you on the weekend!

Eva: Good luck with preventing the cold. Sounds like you are doing the right stuff with getting enough sleep. Make sure you get lots of fluids too. It may make not prevent the cold, but it should make it not as bad.

Mary: Congrats on registering the ToT run. I always wanted to do a night race so after I do the marathon weekend thing, I am thinking either that or Wine and Dine will be next on my RunDisney list.

Vicky: Is that the race down Yonge St? I saw it advertised in a magazine, looks like a great time! As for protein, I don't really measure my intake, but in addition to my diet (which I think is pretty well rounded), I add on another 50-60 grams per day via shakes and bars.

Dave: Very insightful post! Everyone is different, but I find one day of being lazy is ok...more than that and I am in trouble in the motivation department. I find I need to force myself to workout, whereas if I did not take 2 or more days off, I am always looking forward to running/working out.

Rick: Best of luck in raising funds for a very worthwhile cause. I have a done some cancer/diabetes/kidney fund raising events, you will find it to be very rewarding on so many levels.

Lynn: After being a Nike man forever (Structure Triax), I am a new convert to Asics. A friend recommended GT 2160s, I saw them on sale, so I got them and I am very glad I did. Have a great trip to Denver and say hi to Mr. Manning if you see him!

Regina: Tracking calories was very effective in helping me drop unwanted pounds. Even if you do it for a few months, it gets you a better sense what is good and bad as many things are not so obvious.

AFM: Nobody will believe this, but I did the same two 7.5 mile loops again this weekend without looking at my watch, and again the times were identical for each loop (not even a second in the difference). I am really finding my Garmin hard to believe because I ran faster this week (8:49 avg pace vs 9:11 last week) and I know I really slowed down quite a bit in the last mile of so. Next week I may walk a good part of the first loop just to make sure my Garmin is not possessed or something!

Also, after temps in the mid 20's here last week (mid-high 70's for you US folks) winter came back with bizzard like conditions last night. So, right as the storm was starting to hit, I went for a fartlek run. Running in those conditions was exhilarating...and I had a great run, there were stretches where I was cruising at 6:00m/m. If only I could maintain that pace for a half marathon (or even a 5K)!

Anyways, registration for next January marathon is in two weeks, who all is in the yes, no, and maybe camps?

Have a good week all

Robbie

Rick: Thanks for the info. I'll get right on it.

Robbie: I think you kind of have to believe the Garmin, but, yeah, test it out. ;) I love my 2160s, but they keep changing their shoes, so now I have to look at 2170s. I still miss my 2150s. I am in the maybe camp but it's a really weak maybe, probably much closer to no. I would love to go, but just don't see it happening. You never know though.

Vicky: I forgot to answer your protein question. This is a biggie for me because I've been a vegetarian on and off. I get 100 grams a day when I keep track. It's not that hard once you know how to do it (lots of Greek yogurt).
I once read that an athletic person should have 1 gram per pound of body weight, but there's no way I could do that and don't think I'm athletic enough to need to. I think that's more for body builders.

AFM: Harrison is staying home from school today for some dental stuff and since his foot hurts, we're just going to take it easy. I'm going to be doing lots of homework and running. That's it.

Have a great Wednesday team!

Hi Team!

Eva- I hope your surgery goes well tomorrow with no issues and that you have a quick recovery! Wow $17 is a great deal! I’m glad it worked on your run and you didn’t get any chafing! Sending you PD!!

Vicky- That’s cool you found $5 today. I’m going back and forth between my Adidas Supernovas Sequence 3’s and Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12’s. Are the Kayanos what you originally picked when you were fitted at a running store? Thanks for filling me in on hot yoga. LOL, I guess I’m out of the loop with that stuff!

Yes, they were saying the debris is moving faster than they had originally predicted and washed up sooner than they thought it would.

How have your runs been this week? Good luck on your pie this week. I hope it turns out better this time. I’m glad you had a good workout with your chiro and got adjusted after! That is very nice! What’s the name of the 10k? I don’t keep track of how much protein I eat in a day.

Tandy- I have not counted calories in probably about 8-9 years so even when I was food journaling last year, it probably was not as accurate as what I am doing now where I am actually measuring out the food servings to make sure I’m not going overboard. I thought it was a good article though. I liked that they gave different food suggestions and ideas that you can build on from there. I also liked the idea of rotating meals. Great job finishing your 13 miles even though it sounded pretty rough and painful! Sending you positive thoughts for your nursing stuff!

Kim- Hi!

Lynn- Have a fun and safe trip!!

Dave- Way to go on the PR!

Mary- That is awesome you and Ken are signed up for ToT!!! It looks like an awesome race! I hope your knee is feeling a little better today.

Robbie- LOL, I agree with Tandy. I’m sure your Garmin is probably right. Way to go on getting to 6:00m/m on your fartlek runs!!

AFM, I had a great 4 mile run on the TM today. Was hoping to get outside, but it was just too windy today. I did some core and upper body training after the run. As for my long run on Monday, it wasn’t the best run I have ever had. The goal was to run 13 miles but it was a day DH was getting off work and by the time we finally got ready to go run it was already 4:00pm. He was exhausted…I was exhausted…neither one of us wanted to run. That said we both managed to make it out the door to run with a goal of hitting at least 8 miles. The run was ok (could have been much worse), but it definitely wasn’t great. The wind was blowing (not as hard as it is today). I had some side cramps that I was having trouble shaking. I am certain they had everything to do with what I had eaten (and not eaten) earlier that day. At one point I also landed on the uneven ground and twisted my right ankle. Luckily, it didn’t do any damage, but it could have been really bad. My left shin was also bothering me a little here and there. DH even said it was a rough run for him so I think it was just an off day for us. So we plugged along until we made it to our 8 mile goal that we set before we left the house and decided it was better to just cut it short for the day. The one motivating factor that got me up and out for the 8 mile run was that I was down to 200 calories left for dinner according to MyFitnessPal tracker. LOL, nothing like food to motivate me to get my butt out the door! That said, I am thankful I was able to find the motivation to get out for the run, even though I didn’t want to, and even though I didn’t do the full 13 miles because 8 miles is still way better than no miles. :goodvibes

Hi team!

Regina - Isn't that why we all run? To eat! LOL Ok that's why I run  Good job on the 8 miler! I'm glad you didn't injure your ankle. It's not fun. I find my shins tend to bother me when I change my gait but I can usually tell it's coming so I'll walk for a minute to try and readjust.

Yes, I was fitted for Kayanos from the running store when I first started out. I really liked them but after a year or so I found my big toe was getting irritated. My physio suggested it might be the toe box on the shoe being too low. I tried out the NB and the pain went away.

The 10K is called the Sporting Life 10K. It's a bit funny because the start and finish are in two different locations. Kim is doing it too and says her DH will drive down to pick us up. Otherwise, they have a shuttle bus you can pay for or you can hop on the subway (about 20 mins).

What do you think you ate that caused the cramps? I remember a while ago, I swapped an apple in my breakfast for a pear and it gave me cramps. Turns out a pear has more fibre than an apple.

Tandy - I seem to be averaging about 66 g of protein in a day. Yesterday I ran out of almond milk and didn't want to use cow's milk to make my protein shake so I ended up getting an egg omelet and ham breakfast sandwich on a whole wheat English muffin. That had more protein than my shake. Not much but I was surprised. It was 13 vs. 17. The only reason I don't want the greek yogurt is because I want to try and avoid dairy. But I know it's loaded with protein. Beans have a lot of protein I think? Is it hard to make sure you're getting the right amounts of nutrients being a vegetarian? Lots of pixiedust: for Harrison!

The 10K had been on my to-do list for a while but it always sold out. This year they're giving out a $30 gift card for registering. So it was like $20 to do the race. I figure I can use the $30 towards new running shoes or for a pair of shorts. Plus I get to see Kim and her DH!

Sending you good thoughts and pixiedust: You're a shoe-in for nursing school though! I've seen how hard you've been working this past year and I know how much you want it :)

Robbie - I'm definitely in for the full because I want the anniversary medal but am undecided on Goofy. If the fees aren't crazy, I'll probably cave and go Goofy again. There are two races on Yonge Street this year. That was due in part to the mayor moving one of the city's marathons to the spring. The one I'm doing is called the Sporting Life 10K. The other is called the Yonge St 10K and that's in April?

Eva - Good luck with your surgery! I hope all goes well. I've found that rinsing with Listerine or salt water, getting enough sleep and hand washing are all great for preventing illness. You should see if you can come up to Toronto in 2013. I think Mike is coming for a race. Cleveland is 3-4 hours from Toronto? I like your idea of setting a goal of a 1/2 lb a week :)

AFM - Last night in class we did a Boston Cream Pie which is a cake in my opinion and a quiche. I have never cracked so many eggs in my life! In our group of four, we used about 40 eggs? Yikes! The Boston Cream turned out nicely but decorating it was a pain. If I was at home, I probably would have made a glaze out of melted chocolate, cream and butter. But the instructor had fondant and fudge (not what you think fudge is). The reason being that the fondant would keep the final product shiny. It was a pain in the a** to work with. It "hardened" almost immediately after taking it off the heat and the decorations looked ... ugly. LOL I'm sure it tastes fine though. The quiche turned out great! Now I just have to figure out how to make a lower calorie version LOL

Although I haven't weighed in, I think the journaling is going well. I haven't wanted to journal junk food or eat at places where they don't give out nutritional info. So that means lots of homemade lunches or eating at Subway. Today, I noticed that my boots are fitting better so I'm happy. Although I'm suppose to run today, I'm giving my knee one more day rest and then I'll run on Saturday and Sunday. It's not hurting today but I don't want to push it either. Here's hoping it they'll be pain free runs!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good morning team.

Good day here, the weather is perfect and the scale was kind this morning. I'm hovering around 169.6 lbs but I'm good with that. Now that I'm seeing below 170 I'm tickled.

Good training walk this morning, 4 miles at the pace I plan to do the 10 miler at this weekend. Goal for the 10 miler is just under 2 hours. It will be a challenging walk due to the long uphill portion. I'm ready!

Everyone have a magical day and find reasons to smile, trust me they are there.

Dave:hippie:

One request... Can someone help me come up with a title for the April thread? I just realized that April 1st is on Sunday. Yikes!

A couple slogans for races I saw recently were pretty cool (although none of them really go with the word April very well ...not sure if that is supposed be that way)

We run this town (or maybe resort in this case!)

Pavement fears us (in April maybe?)

I went for my regular run this morning, deciding on running it at race pace to test out a new pair of Newton Distance shoes I bought on Tuesday. It is a very lightweight, neutral shoe with only a 2mm heel drop. My current Saucony Ride 4s were pretty worn so it was time.

I started off with a 5-minute warm-up walk, then started my run. I ended the run with another cool-down walk and finished at a total of 4.47 miles. It felt pretty good so when I got home, I checked the watch to see what my pace was (I didn't look at my watch during the run; I wanted to go by 'feel').

Excluding the .67 mile of warm-up and cool-down, I ran 3.8 miles in 30:15 minutes! I don't even believe it! I had to double-check all the stats. I ran those 3.8 miles at a 7:57/mm pace! :woohoo:

I have never run that fast for that long a distance EVER! It didn't feel like I was running any faster than I usually go, but it did feel more fluid and I was totally in the 'zone' with my breathing and stride (and my feet loved the shoes). Maybe it was the new shoes, or maybe Tinker Bell sprinkled some extra PD on me. Either way, I was totally excited! The smile is still on my face. :goodvibes

Many of you are speedy and way faster than this. And who knows if I will be able to repeat this in the future. But for me, this was one of those 'running moments' where you just marvel at the experience and you know in your heart that you are a runner. :)

Vicky: How about something with the word Fools in it? Fools for Disney? Fools for running? April showers bring something? (In case you can't tell, I'm not the most imaginative person).

I definitely run to eat! I go out with people and they say things like "How on earth can you eat that much if you're that small (and, no, i'm not that small)?" My answer is I run. A lot! If you run a 10 mile run, you get like 1100 extra calories that day. Works for me!

I work pretty hard to get the right mixture of beans and grains and then, eggs and dairy. I understand why you don't eat dairy. I don't really have a choice. I also love fish, crab legs and lobster. :thumbsup2

It's funny that you mention Subway. Frank gives me such a hard time about my Subway addiction. It's not that I'm addicted, it's just that they have always had nutritional info, even 15 years ago. I'm just used to eating at places where I can chart what I ate.

Rick: I am so happy for you reaching that speed. It is so amazing to just not watch the clock. And, to reach one of those speeds never before thought of is really cool! And, I don't care who you are, running almost 4 miles with a pace in the 7s is fast! :thumbsup2

Dave: Good luck with your race this weekend. I know, for me personally, my body can't walk that fast. But, you are an expert and know what you need to do. I bet you reach that goal!:thumbsup2

Regina: Sorry that run was so bad. You know, sometimes you've just got to call it good going a shorter distance. That's okay. Is your ankle alright? Like I told Vicky, I run to eat, so all good!:thumbsup2

AFM: It was kind of rainy yesterday, so I went down to the TM and planned on 3, I made it about 3 minutes and gave up. I just have no motivation on the thing. So, no run and no zumba. Felt pretty lazy. Today, I was on my way to my 2nd class and Harrison's school called me. He was throwing up and I had to come get him. It's okay. It was just some medicine with codeine that I had given him this morning. But, they wouldn't let him stay. So, I had 4 classes that I didn't make it to. The professors were all understanding, but I've got lots of work to make up.

I am spending my entire day reading a book. And, not even a good one. My son asked me to read "Touching Spirit Bear" which is a kids book. It's good, it's just an easy read. I think I'll be done with the whole thing in 5 hours total. Nice way to spend the day!:thumbsup2

I called the school about my nursing school acceptance letter today. They haven't mailed them out, and now, I have to wait until April 15th! It's going to be a long 2 & 1/2 weeks around this house!

That is awesome Rick. You easily covered 5K in under 25 minutes. I looked at the 5K results of last fall's race weekend we have here...you would have finished ahead of 90% of the field!

I have had breakthrough runs like that too before. You may not repeat it the next few times you try, but over time, I think you will notice your average pace moving closer and closer to that run.

How about April...and we're not foolin' around!

Went out for my run walk/ this morning. Happy to say that the knee feels fine! Came back and did some crunches as well. Trying to work on the abs. Also happy to report that when I stepped on the scale yesterday, I'd lost 2 lbs.! :yay::yay:

Yesterday a friend of mine told me about this race. She isn't a runner, but her daughter is. She said that her part in the race would be to walk at the back and push her daughter's two kids in the stroller!

I don't think I'll try for it this year, but it might be fun! Be sure to read the race info!

Pixie dust to all those in need!

Sold! So cute ... I'll use it as the title on Sunday. Congrats on the weight loss :)

Sorry gang... it's been a busy day at work so I haven't had much of a chance to post, text, FB etc. Will catch up on the weekend :goodvibes

I had a very good race yesterday up in Louisville. I'll post more on the new thread that our Bunny posts today.
