Hakuna Matata - Gobbling up the pavement and thankful we can!

Beth, I contacted them in regards to the Princess race. They seemed pretty good, but the issue I had is the monetary commitment. I can give you my example to consider: It would cost me $4200 to do the Princess with them. That doesn't include the 100$ registration fee to join. On December 17, 2010, would be the re-commit date. I could choose to stay with them or leave. If I left, I lost the 100$, if I stay I have to have the 4200$ ready. If I was short, it came off my credit card. I could keep fundraising until 1 month after the race date and any funds made in that time would be returned to my credit card.

As much as I appreciate what they offer (security and nice accomodations, but no training in my area so it would be all virtual :confused3), the idea that I'm required to bite the proverbial bullet with my finances in this economic time frame turned me off. I just didn't feel the risk of having to pay a large amount up front would be worth it in the end.

It may be different everywhere but that's what I was offered when I spoke to them.

Saylan ~ Yeah...they don't have the info up for the NYC Marathon (the only race I'll do with a charity and only for 2011 if I don't get in through lottery because after that I'll have guaranteed entry through NYRR's 9+1 program), but I'm guessing I'll be better off doing it through another charity that has a lower threshold for fund raising. I'm not sure if there's a difference in the amount you have to raise if you're local and don't need all the transportation and lodging, so I may go to the info session just to see what the deal would be. But I'll likely go with another charity for NYCM.

Beth, yeah, the prices vary depending on your location and flight necessity. My price would have been lower if I was flying out from a different location (and they have specific flight locations, ie. if I'm within say 500 km from Toronto I'm expected to fly from there and pay my own way to Toronto to catch the assigned flight). I'd rather do funraising where my supporters would say bid 5$/mile for every mile I end up running. I'd rather pay my own way and raise as much as I can instead of having a required threshold. I realize why they have it but it still bothers me to be tied in like that.

Good Monday morning all. Wow zero computer time this weekend just too busy.

Harry Potter I thought was just OK, I have read all the books twice actually and still not sure why I didn't think it was amazing, then DD and her BF went to see it Sat night and they also thought it was a bit blah but thought that the (won't give spoilers) scenes lasted too long....those who have seen it might know what I mean by that.

Not a good weekend food wise but not a total lost did get in a good walk Sat morning and marathon weekend is coming up sooooo fast.

Scott, Lynn: I have spacecoast on the calender for next year, MIke is a total space nut so using it as bait to get to disney next Novemeber;)

Margie- I had a great rest day! I got to visit with Olivia and her eyes told me she wanted to go on a walk! We did a nice stroll up and down the neighborhood! Weather should be VERY interesting for our Turkey Trot! Lets hope that being a trail event we will be somewhat sheltered?

Beth- Sounds like a great Sunday! I have not ever been on a TNT team. I know that they require you to fundraise and I'm just not very good at asking for money!

Hockeychick- I love using races as bait! Main reason I chose Disney! I saw HP 7.1 and LOVED it! I will say they cut some details, and added some in, that I didn't agree with but overall I enjoyed it and felt it was a great set up for HP 7.2!

Have a great day everyone! I am SO BUSY today! I have to go to school for a practical, work from 10-7 and then am going to a friends Jewelry party! Oy-vey!!! When am I suppsed to fit my training in today!

Morning all!

Yeah...I've still got time to make a decision. And I've been assured that people who haven't gotten into the NYCM via lottery have gotten TONS of solicitations from charities to run for them, so I don't think I'll have a hard time deciding.

Oh, and Saylan...the "virtual" training is really no different than doing training on your own anyway. They offer one way of doing it. Personally, I plan to stick with Bingham-Hadfield. It's working for me so far. One thing I don't like doing is mixing and matching plans within a training session. If I was going to look at two different ones (Higdon and Galloway for instance), I'd do one for one race and one for another. While there may be similarities, I think trying to mix them you're potentially shooting yourself in the foot. Just MHO though. :) Your mileage may vary.

HockeyChic ~ I really enjoyed Harry Potter. I thought they'd end part 1 exactly where they did - it made perfect sense as in a way I felt it could have been broken into 2 books at that point too. I gave my whole set I had before to my former priest for her newly adopted daughter from Ethiopia, mainly because there are rumblings that Rowling *might* be beginning to think about putting the books in e-book format. But I decided I can't wait that long to re-read them so I got the paperback set yesterday. LOL. I realized watching the movie how many little details I didn't remember. But I definitely enjoyed it.

Nikki ~ Sounds like you had a good day too! Yeah...our weather is supposed to be iffy for Thursday as well. So we'll see what happens. I'll still run it...but what I pack in my bag may differ greatly!

~beth

Beth: Yeah I don't relish paying 100+$ for training I'd be administering myself. I was mostly considering them for the raising money for charity part. I'm partly glad I chose not to go with them only because I feel like there's enough pressure regarding the plans for this race that I don't need the added stress.

I wanted to do the Higden plan but felt that I wasn't really ready to start it but the first few weeks are almost identical to the Galloway plan that I decided to wait it out and see. I've found I'm able so far to do the Higden plan so I might stick with that and if I need to cut back I may ease up and follow a modified Galloway plan.

I'm curious though about the Bingham-Hadfield plan. What's that one like?

Our weather has taken a surprising turn for the better. No snow thus far and I woke up (at 7:45 am) to 13 celsius weather and rain. Although rain is icky, it is much preferable to snow!

I managed to get my upper body cross-training in yesterday and I'm going to be calling the Running Room about my shoes today as well. I really want to get some of the things settled.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Hi everyone!

Margie - I'm here! I was just being lazy this weekend so I was only posting on Facebook. No emails or DIS postings. I do owe you an email though  Tell Sara she'll love the Harry Potter movie. It has a different feel than the previous movies - it seems a little more dark and it's amazing how much the actors have grown up over the years! How about baked apples or butternut squash with honey as sides? I went to a Thanksgiving dinner where they had baked apples as a side - it tasted like apple pie filling with apple slices but less sweet.

Saylan - What a change in weather huh? We got a touch of snow yesterday morning. It was maybe about 30 minutes worth and everything melt but still. And today the weather is 10C - unreal! Definitely not November weather but I'm not complaining! Did you go to the Whitby Waterfront races yesterday? Oh, I was going to say not to worry too much about matching your RoadID to your shoes. When the shoe models change, so do the colours. My first pair of runners were blue and white and I matched everything to them. Then when the model changed, the new colour options were pink and black or white and orange.

Beth - Glad you liked the new HP movie too! You're right about the details, I felt like I should have skimmed the book again before going to watch on Friday. Did anyone in your theatre dress up? :) And how cool is it that you got arm warmers! I love it when races give something other than the standard t-shirts - the best clothing I got from a race was a NB jacket this summer.

Regina - Congrats on the new dining room table and chairs purchase! Just in time for Thanksgiving too! Are you planning to have lots of people over? And I wished I was as organized as you and started my shopping already. How was your run at the gym?

Nikki/B] - What a busy day you have! But at least it ends with something fun! I hope you find a lot of nice pieces at the party.

Sue - How was Chicago?

Connie - How was your trek to the grocery? Do you have everything you need for Thursday's dinner?

AFM - I ran 5K and 16K on Saturday and Sunday. The 16K was okay - there was still some pain in my knee and now my right ankle. I'm sure I must have changed my gait and that's why. I still have some discomfort in my knee today. I'm almost ready to tell my chiro that I'll try acupuncture if that will fix everything - but most of you know that I hate needles. I'll talk to her tonight and see what she says. I'm probably going to readjust my training schedule so that I'm doing 1-2 short runs during the week and a LR on Sunday. Not sure how else I can keep my mileage down and still train for the full. It's just really frustrating.

I've got a one hour training session tonight but might split that in half to do a treatment. Not much else planned - will probably just relax at home after the gym.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky – Our weather was nice thru the weekend, well, until Sunday afternoon when it suddenly turned ugly, dropped 10 degrees in a matter of minutes, and started snowing! Cold for the rest of the week, some snow in the forecast. Worst day will be Wed. when the high is only going to be around 20 degrees and will be snowing, and we are traveling to Denver that day.

Saylan – Just remember the Road ID will last a lot longer than your shoes – I would just get the color I like best! (My ankle bracelet is pink). On shirt size – for the Princess it will be a ladies shirt rather than unisex – for me that means order larger than I would if it were a unisex shirt!

Kim – We are hitting WDW after the race, I would avoid the Thanksgiving weekend there if possible! A lot of the Christmas stuff was already up there when we were there for the last weekend of Food and Wine (which was also more crowded than we like it).

Connie –

Elizabeth – How did your race go?

Nikki – Sounds like you have had some nice walks!

Dave –

Margie – Yes, it is normal for our weather to change drastically day to day! When I was helping my brother clean out my Dad’s house, I found a huge bag of granny squares that my mother had crocheted years ago, I decided that it would be nice if I took all the squares and made afghans for each of us, so I divided the squares into 4 afghans, and have been crocheting the squares together for afghans (more like throws, they are not big) for each of my 3 brothers for Christmas. I have 2 done. I am also working on a needlepoint for Scott’s mother. That is almost done. Sounds like a great train track! We are actually flying Thanksgiving Day, and will be in Cocoa Beach, will get to WDW on Monday.

Beth – Your trip sounds great – you will have a great time! The Lion King is coming to Denver – tickets go on sale while we are on vacation – so we have a big note to remind us to call and get tickets the day they go on sale. For shows like that, we will generally splurge for the good seats! My pre-race breakfast is a bagel with peanut butter and a banana. All I can personally tell you about “Team in Training” is that they get A LOT of support from spectators when they run a race – (I have received some from them when I have walked in a purple running shirt)

Regina – I have not started Christmas shopping – I have some Christmas projects, and some of the family gifts are going to be baskets with my jelly and fruit butters from the summer.

AFM – Weekend was not bad, Saturday we put out the outside Christmas lights, Sunday was really nice when we went to walk the dogs, so we decided to go for a bike ride, but by the time we got the bikes out, the temp had dropped and the wind had started to pick up, so we only made it 2 laps around our block. Then Scott took me to our local bike store, he wanted to buy me a new road bike for my birthday (and Christmas) that he said would be more comfortable for long rides than my hybrid – the bike shop had a used Specialized Roubaix – this years model with hardly any mileage on it. I get to go pick it up today – although I probably won’t get to ride it for awhile!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Hi, all,

I walked my cross country 5k this weekend in 46:33. I could only run the first and last quarter mile. Shin splits plague me still! No pain going up or down hills but flat is a killer.

I'm going to get fitted for new shoes tomorrow and have a call in to my future sister-in-law, who is an ortho PA. My training is suffering and I'm beginning to worry how I'll handle the Princess if I don't resolve this. :headache:

Margie: Thanks! I will definitely get some photos done up soon. The headbands are still trial and error but I'm hoping to add some more finesse to them shortly.

Good luck with the traditional dinner (I wouldn't eat vension either)! I'm good as long as I have stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, and gravy. :worship:

Vicky: I didn't make it out because I'm still sorting out my shoes. I went to Sport Chek to try the shoes I got at Running Room on. They didn't have the size I bought but a half size up and they almost felt better fit-wise (but felt like less cushion) and they're identical models! Thing is the ones at Running Room are now 149, so I might go try the half size up there, and see how they feel. If they feel good I might return mine and get these ones. 50$ saved if that works out.

Yeah, you make a good point about them not wearing out as fast. I kind of anticipated always wanting pink shoes but if they don't have them, they don't so maybe getting a colour I like a little less but that matches more things would be good. :sad2: I'm hopeless, lol.

I hope your chiro can help you out. It sounds horribly frustrating but I'm not sure I would ever agree to being a pin-cushion. If you go that route, you have my deepest sympathy, from one needle-fearer to another.

Lynn: Thanks for the tip on the RoadID. Pink's my favourite too!

Hmm, so if a unisex medium sits a little roomy on me, a ladies medium might sit more fitted. I would rather a little space but I'm not sure enough to order a large. Thanks for the help! Your explanation makes things a little clearer.

Es: I hope you're able to get some help to alieviate the pain/discomfort!

Oh yeah... Saylan... The Bingham-Hadfield plan I'm following is probably similarish to Galloway. John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield are a husband and wife team who wrote "Marathoning for Mortals" (GREAT BOOK!). They have like 8 plans in the back of that that range from walking a half marathon to running a full and all kinds of possibilities in between. :)

I've heard a lot of good things about that book. A new friend on my dailymile page also recommended it. The big difference between Galloway and Higden, that I see anyway, is that Galloway cuts the long run short every other week and keeps the tuesday/thursday runs to 30 mintes whereas Higden's plan just keeps upping things slowly. I'm not sure which one is better for my but right now it's easy to do both since they kind of align still.

I may have to check out this Marathoning for Mortals book though since it's coming so highly recommended. I'd love to be able to run a full sometime! :cool1:

Good Afternoon Team!

Busy at work & doing a quick fly-by.

I didn't get blown away & had a great time in Chicago even though it was a work trip.;)

Need to get caught up on all the postings. Have a great evening everyone. AFM it's yoga tonight...........Sue

I've found it VERY accessible and easy to understand. And both John and Coach Jenny have been really accessible and nice (!!) via email and twitter, which is nice! I'm doing the run/walk a half marathon plan for the WDW Half. So far the training's going good. They're pretty careful to not increase the time or mileage by more than 10% each week, which is what you want to do to avoid injuries. They do mix in some "easier" weeks from time to time - like this past week my long run was 7 miles, and this week it's *only* 4. I think next week I jump up to 8 - which means I'll be trotting for 2 more miles after my 10K race. Woohoo!

I just picked up their "training for mortals" log book (apparently my blog and daily mile aren't enough for me?)...I've been debating when to start, and I'm leaning towards starting it after the WDW half...but we'll see.

Hi Team-

Beth- Way to go keeping up with your training.

Saylan- I hope you figure out what size shirt you want to order.

Margie- I didn't make it out for a run this last weekend. I wanted to run but then got really busy cleaning the house and getting stuff ready for the weekend.

Lynn- That's cool you get a new bike! When do you leave for Orlando?

Vicky- I'm not having anyone over for Thanksgiing this year. Since my dad just got married he and his new wife are cooking dinner at their house (I used to have him over at my house). It will just be Kyle and I for Thanksgiving, but I am actually really looking forward to it I think it will be a nice change.

AFM, I ran 3 miles outside after work today. It was cold at first, but it was actually a really good run for me. We took Sydney and she seemed to have a great time! Only 16 more work hours until I get a 4 day weekend. My table gets delivered tomorrow and I'm most definitely looking forward to that. We saw Harry Potter late Saturday night. There were only like 20 of us in the theater!! :thumbsup2 I really liked it, but Kyle thought it went too slowly.

Have a great night everyone!

Lynn, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

We are planning disney after the race for the week. YAAAAAA

Happy Birthday Lynn, our sister from the land of snow and wind.

I'm off today and after walking 6.5 miles with my walkers I'm going to try to start writing again. I wrote a new introduction last week to Panda Endurance.

Have a great day y'all.
