Hi all
Sorry I have been MIA lately. My running has not been the best lately which lead me to be frustrated
I was losing motivation and did not want to run much less talk about it. I was quitting runs early, and what were supposed to be easy pace runs felt really difficult. I think it was a combination of a head cold, insomnia, and very high humidity. Anyways, the head cold is clearing and the humidity broke so I am thinking I am breaking out of this rut.
I signed up to do the Cobequid Trail half marathon this weekend in Nova Scotia just to get my competitive juices flowing again as I have not participated in a race since June
maybe I need to break my marathon training up with an actual event.
Speaking of my marathon, it was in the national news this week for some controversy about a rule change. Last year a 9 year old boy ran the full, and this year, they put in age restrictions so that the minimum age is 18 or 16 with parental approval. The child, who now has two full marathons under his belt and his family are now bringing the policy change to the media. Per the family, the boy was given clearance from his family doctor.
Here is a
link to the story:
One side of the debate cites health concerns that a person of that age is not physically developed and partaking in such an event could be detrimental to the development of their muscles, bones, tendons, and even heart. We do have laws in place to protect children in other ways (smoking, drinking, seat belts, ect), why not an extreme event such as a marathon?
The opposing side argues that there is an obesity epidemic developing in children in North America, so we should not discourage physical activity. Furthermore, they point to the fact that running is much safer than contact sports that kids of that age play such as hockey and football, which could easily give kids concussions and other injuries.
Any thoughts on this issue? Do the marathon you participate in have age limits? Disney does, right?
Personally speaking, I think I side with the marathon committee. As my mileage is ramping up in preparation for my first marathon, I can tell it is taking a bit of a toll on my 38 year old body. If there were studies that suggest potential issues for a growing body, I would tend to believe them. On the other hand, physical activity and running should not be discouraged. Maybe a compromise would to encourage and emphasize 5 to10K events for minors?
