:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

:yay: The Biggest Loser Challenge! :yay:

We'll weigh in every Friday and there will be one winner for the biggest percentage of weight lost. As well, everyone will get points for the week and the person with the most points will be another winner :) Everyone will be responsible for keeping track of their own points. I like to use an Excel sheet because it makes it easy to keep track of the points.

And so long as there's interest, we can have this go on until the end of August!

Here's how the points will be awarded:

30 minutes of exercises daily - 1 point
Drinking 8 glasses of water a day (8oz each) - 1 point
5 servings of fruits and veggies daily - 1 point
Trying a new food/dish each week - 1 point (ideally this should be a healthy food) :)
Taking a daily vitamin - 1 point
Each pound of weight lost - 1 point (ie. 5lbs=5 points)

Bonus points
Person who has the biggest percentage of weight loss - 1 point
Successfully avoiding the week's temptation - 1 point (up to each inidivudal)
Completing my exercise of the week - 1 point x day

You can bank your exercise minutes so for example if you worked out for an hour on Monday and used Tuesday as a rest day, you'd still have 30 minutes over two days. I know people like rest days so I don't want to penalize anyone.

Week 1
Vicky - 141.4 lbs
Lynn - -1lb/4 points
Elizabeth -
Regina - 136.6 lbs/3.5 points

Week 2
Tandy - 133
Eva - 137.2
Elizabeth -
Regina -
Lynn -
Vicky

Exercise for the week: Curl and presses! Try for 4 sets of 12, resting in between. The amount of weight is up to you. If you can do squats without knee pain, make it a squat, curl and press!

Vicky we have to change my Bio, I turn 60 on Oct 7th and we have me down as 58. New age group to rock!! Grrrrrr!!

Just watched casablanca for the first time. Relaxing with Sally today, we will get some training in later though.

Happy Oct y'all.

Dave:hippie:

HI Kids!

Well, we are in Milwaukee for our first marathon! Thanks for all the well wishes, I think we are going to need them! We picked up our race packets and are waiting to head over to a pasta dinner put on by the American Cancer Society. The expo was disapointing, with little to interest us. I couldn't even get my race shirt yet, as all of them in my size had flaws. I will receive a replacement in the mail in about two weeks. The finisher shirts were $42 each and had a really poor quality to them, so we passed on those. Our goody bags had a FOUR pack of red bull in each of them. I don't drink the stuff, but they cost about $5 each. Pretty amazed by that.

I will post more race reports soon. We have been busy volunteering at Robert's school. Also, we received the sad news that my cousin lost his short battle with cancer and past away on Wednesday.

-Mike

Dave,

Rick and I are both doing the Illinois Ichallenge (5k and half) in Champange IL on May 25th- 26th if you care to join us for a fun weekend. Hotels book fast if you want to come!

-Mike

Dave:

The dates for the iChallenge are April 26-28, 2012. The 5K is on the 27th and the Half & Full Marathons are both on the 28th.

It would awesome if you guys could join us! :yay:

I will talk to the rest of team Panda and see if they are interested, if not we might still consider it. It's called the iChallenge?

Do good Mike!!

Dave:hippie:

Hi Team! Happy Saturday! I hope everyone is doing well.

Lynn- Good luck on your bike ride! I hope it went well. I bet your decorations look great! A camping road trip sounds like a blast! Are you going to make it a longer one and stop to see different points along the way?

Dave- Kyle and I have also considered doing DVC points, but we also cannot justify it. I agree with everyone else- cemetery training sounds very Halloweenish! Glad your training went well!

Tandy- How do the campers decorate the loops? Thanks for the feedback on the Bondiband! LOL, he fell in and that was it huh? That is so cute! I think Labradoodles are supposed to be water dogs anyway. Kyle took her to a river in July or August and Kyle pushed her into the river (I was at work and am still sad I missed it!) and I guess she was flopping and flailing around, but then she figured out what she was doing and loved it. I hope your 4 mile walk went well. You have a very busy weekend going on right now! I agree with Vicky- maybe creating a song or rhyme will help you with your memorization.

Vicky- Aww thanks!! Haha, I thought about throwing a party to celebrate! She still hasn’t gotten all of her stuff out and keeps coming back. And each time she comes, she leaves empty soda cans, coffee cups, etc. just lying around and unpicked up. Surprise surprise! Umm, I would say it took me a few weeks to get used to running a mile in them. Kyle has been running solely in his for the last 6 months for our runs and he still gets a little sore when the routine changes. Like, he had his 1.5 mile run the other day and ran a lot faster for that and after his lower legs were really sore. I’m not sure which wineries we are going to- there are A LOT in this area and we are only going to 4-5. I figure it will be a good start though. I’ll let you know if we find any we love! Congrats on your weight loss this week! That’s awesome! And great job on the eating! LOL, well I’m glad your muffins still tasted good without the sugar. Good luck on your 12 miler this weekend!

Elizabeth- A nice bike ride in the mornings sounds lovely. I hope your 6 mile run today went well!

Mike & Liz- Good luck! Can’t wait to hear the race reports! I’m sorry the expo was disappointing. I am sorry for your loss.

Rick- Good luck this weekend!!!

AFM, we went out for a 3 mile run today. It was windy at times, but otherwise ok. It has a been a dreary, rainy day here. I weighed myself yesterday and I was 136.6, which is an almost 4 pound lost from last week. I don’t want to get too excited though. I need to see if I can maintain that. I have really been working on my eating and portions. I think the food journal is helping. We have also added more veggies to each dinner and I’m trying to stay away from as much processed food and sugar as I can. I am giving myself one cheat day a week.

So here are my points for the week:
30 min exercise- 1 pt
8 glasses water- 1 pt
New food/dish-1 pt
Daily Vitamin- ½ pt (I keep forgetting!)
I didn’t get any bonus points this week. I didn’t come up with anything to avoid last week.

Kyle and I tried out this salad place in Coos Bay and it was fantastic! I had their shrimp salad (which was my new dish this week) and I loved it. It had mandarin oranges, strawberries, avocado, and I substituted red onion for cherry tomatoes. The dressing was raspberry vinegarette. We will definitely be back!

Dave: Happy early bday! 60 is a big milestone. I get so excited every time I move up to a new racing age category.

Mike: I'm so sorry for your loss. It seems like you just told us your cousin was diagnosed. Very sad.
Good luck at your first marathon.

Rick: Good luck at your race! You seem to be racing almost every weekend.

Regina: The campers just decorate up their sites. Inflatables, lights, etc.... I think they go really big for Christmas, but Halloween is a close 2nd. Yes, labradoodles should like water. My dog is a welsh terrier and they aren't really known for swimming. But, I can't keep him out of the water.
I am trying to work up my arch strength and hope to someday go to at least a minimal shoe. Don't think I could ever do the Vibrams. Right now, I'm learning that my feet and hips are so bad that they messed up my calf. Who knew this stuff was all connected? ;)
Great job on the weight loss. 4 pounds is awesome!:thumbsup2

AFM: It's 1 am and I can't sleep for some reason. I seem to wake up nightly with anatomy nightmares. :laughing:Oh, plus I ate pie right before I went to sleep. :rolleyes1

Took a day off from walking. I think I need to incorporate more rest days until I'm fully healed. Baseball is going well so far. We won our first game, but lost our second. Harrison got a hit in both, so I owe him $10 (yes, bribery is a mom's best friend). One more game tomorrow, lots of studying, hopefully a walk, and watching my Packers beat the Broncos. It'll be a good day. :)

I got up and had to turn the heat on this morning, it is 37 degrees outside, burrrr! Sally and I went walking yesterday for her 35 min after our day of shopping and going out for supper.

Dillards has there big end of season sale and we found a nice suit for Sally to wear to work, found her a pretty blue summer dress, a couple of blouses and a purse, all good name brand and spent about $100. The suit was normally $250 by it's self. This sale and the spring sale are when we buy our clothes. I like to wear good quality stuff and this is the only way we can afford the prices.

Today will include some sort of exercising, probably walking at the track so we can walk together and then do some video again. I needed a more relaxed weekend so my muscles could recover from the hard training I've been doing the last couple of months.

Have an awesome Sunday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Hi Team!

Tandy- I didn’t know the campers decorated their sites. The next time we are at WDW around Halloween or Christmas we will have to check it out. What did they say is wrong with your feet and hips that they messed up your calf? Thanks! I am looking forward to continuing to lose weight. I’m sorry to hear you’re having nightmares. When is your test again? Hopefully soon! Congrats on the 1st baseball game! How was today’s game?

Dave- 37 degrees is cold! I’m glad you and Sally had fun shopping and found some nice items. I hope your exercising went well.

AFM, DH and I ran 6 miles today. I felt pretty good the first 4 miles and then I had the sudden urge I needed to use the restroom. Thank goodness we were running by the beach where they have an outhouse and that I was on that end of the beach. My run seemed to go downhill after that. I ended up with really painful side stitches in my right side the last 1.5 miles, which I think may have been a result of chugging water and continuing to run. It took all my energy to make it through the last mile because they hurt so bad. But I made it! So that is the important thing right? I really don’t want to have to wear my fuel belt, but I think it might be my best water option at the moment so I can drink as I need to and that will cut back on any future side stitches. I would leave water bottles along the route, but I worry someone would take them or do something to them. Sigh, decisions, decisions! I really hope my next long run goes better!

DH and I enjoy running along the road by the beach. There is about a half mile stretch of it so we just run back and forth until we reach our desired mileage. I don’t mind running back and forth since it is such a lovely view for some of it. However, today there was a car just parked next to the beach (people like to do that over here) and the driver was smoking a cigarette with her window down so each time we ran by we got a nasty whiff of the cigarette smoke. Who smokes that much? Yuck!! Unfortunately that car seemed to be there for our entire run too.

Also, my cell phone has died. I knew it was on the fritz but I have been trying to hold out until I see the new Iphone 5 and when it goes on sale because DH and I would like to try an Iphone and are going to upgrade our phones at the same time. The last week or so it has been shutting off on me randomly and will not hold a charge, and even dies when it says the battery is full. I have been trying to turn it on all day today and it won’t turn on. Why couldn’t it hang in there just a little longer?

Other than that, all is well over here. I am happy to say my eating is going well. I have to go to Idaho on Thursday for about a week, so I think I may just try to cook for the family while I am there so I can ensure I am eating healthy while there. I definitely don’t want to do undo my hard work and progress so far.

I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend!

Good Evening Team!

Vicky - Congrats on your weight loss! I think Adventures by Disney should be safe in South Africa, we are doing a bit on our own, we are flying into Johannesburg, then taking the train to Cape Town where the tour starts.

Kim - Hi!

Dave - Today I saw a guy running in the cemetery near us - I thought of you when I saw it. Casablanca is one of my favorite movies! Good find on clothes for Sally!

Mike - Sorry about your cousin.

Regina - The camping road trip will have a few stops, a night in Missouri at Scott’s parents house, then on to WDW, with just stops where we need to sleep - then on to Atlanta for nephews graduation, the stop again on the way back at Scott’s parents house and spend a day to visit, then home. Once at WDW, we touring the campground, I cannot remember if it was Halloween or Christmas, but some of the decorations were really elaborate! I always carry my own water on walks and bike rides! Even in races where water is provided - I’d rather drink in sips. Good luck with your eating while in Idaho.

Elizabeth - Glad to hear you are enjoying biking for cross-training!

AFM - Weather was beautiful for our bike ride, but I did not feel great, so I did not ride at my usual pace. We ended up cutting a corner at the end, and rode about 49 miles instead of 54. The Octoberfest at the end of the race was not very exciting, so we just headed home. The race course was rather hilly, with 2 killer hills, really nice scenery. Today was a rest day, our local bike club had a picnic so we went there and ate way too much!!!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Lynn it sounds as though you have traded in your walking shoes for bike shoes and a set of wheels. I'll miss walking races with you.

I will be racing solo at the WDW events this year so if anyone wants to walk between 12 and 14 min per mile let me know. If I can't find a walking buddy I'll just try to go under 2:30 for the half and have a relaxed marathon walk.

From the reports I have read about the W&D half the fast people had a good time eating food and doing rides but the slower folks found long lines. I don't think I'll do this one next year. Especially since the USATF national masters race walking race is held the first week in October and I want to race there next year.

I'm off for a track workout, one mile warm up, 4 X600m walking sprints and then a mile cool down.

Have a great monday y'all.

Hi everyone, was wondering where my updates where then noticed it was a new month.

Getting excited, heading out to Disney and a cruise at the end of the month. Very excited, except for a short visit to Maine in July to visit friends we haven't been away since marathon weekend in January and boy do I need a vaca!!!!

Official disney 1/2 trainning starts today. Yippeeee that means 14 weeks disney I get to see some old friends and meet some new ones!!!!

Sorry I did read all but running late this morning, I think I work 3 times as many hours preparing to go on vacation then normal. We are so understaffed. They don't seem to understand you can't keep adding salespeople and not add to the brokers, also throw in going paperless so everything needs to be scanned.....grrrrrrrr ok will stop venting now.

It is a beautiful day to be alive, enjoy every second of it:grouphug:
