Hakuna Matada - Spooky October

This mornings group workout was absolutely perfect. Some days it just all comes together. The first half of the 6.5 miles was good conversation and fellowship, and some roasting of me since I turn 60 in 2 days. The second half was an all out as I kept pace with a normally faster training partner. I never let up and finished the walk stride for stride with him. His Garmin said our pace was sub 12 mpm and last mile was 11:02.

Eva, can't wait to finally meet you princess. Although you will be way ahead of me during the actual races.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team!

Eva - Hey! You mispelled my name LOL Just kidding! Do you know someone at work sent me an email and spelled it just like you do. Hello spell checker! I don't think we had any plans for after Chef Mickey so no worries about hanging out with the group :)

I'm probably wearing my CW-X capris for the full so I'll skip out on the socks. Although - they might be fun for the meets. Let me know if you get them. Did you get your tights? Loooove the hair clip btw!!

Of course you can join, just weigh-in on Friday and we'll go from there. If you don't want to post your weight, just send me a PM and we can post the pounds lost.

Kim - We have to train for these races? What's that all about  You know, I think I've only done a handful of races where I was trained and uninjured. My physio and trainer keep telling me to stretch, roll and use The Stick on days when I'm not running. Massages are great too! Do you know what's causing the tightness? I'm happy to hear about the warm weather we're getting for the weekend!

Dave - Good job on workouts! You are a racing machine! I saw your FB post on going out without a watch and like that idea a lot!

Regina - I've only seen deer a couple of times since I'm a city slicker LOL They do make their way into the city every so often though. Mostly we get squirrels, raccoons, skunks, rats and possums (yuck). Sometimes when I run at night, I can hear the raccoons fighting.

I bought my can of Ultima at a local running store. I think if you go to their website, you can order directly from them because you live in the US. http://www.ultimareplenisher.com/ Just to warn you, it doesn't taste like much. And don't shake the can before you open it :) Sue recommended a gel for me - I think it was GU but have to go back through my email to find it.

No idea what I did to my ankle - my physio did some ART on it last night and it feels better today. I'm going to go for a run tonight and see how it holds up. He said to use the foam roller and stick before I go out - that's why I didn't go this morning. He said that it could just be the way my body is so if my legs don't align properly, running many miles will eventually cause strain.

AFM - I had my physio over last night and he looked at my ankle. I asked him about doing MCM and he said running it would put me at higher risk for injury because of my ankle. He said I could do it and maybe nothing would happen but I could run and re-injure my ankle :( I kind of want to do the Goofy more than MCM so I think I may defer my entry to next year. I know back in January it took me about 1.5 months of no running to get my ankle back so I really don't want to risk it.

Gotta get back to work! Will check in with everyone later!! :wave2:

I've tried posting here twice today. Keeps kicking me out and losing my messages! Grrrr...

Got kicked off again! Wanted to post my race report today!

Dave~ Thank you brother! I hope you know what an inspiration you are to this team ,and what all of you mean to me! I couldn't (and probably wouldn't have) done it without the fantastic group here!

- Mike :cool2:

Mike, I get way more back from the rest of you adult athletes than I could ever give. I'm just blaszing a trail for others who want to live long healthy and active lives to follow. Age doesn't have to be a limitation but just another challenge to over come.

I guess by now you have figured out that a full marathon is more than just twice as long as a half. For me it's all pleasent and smooth till about mile 22, from then on it takes more than just physical strength, it takes determination and courage.

Bet you learned something about how strong you could be when you had nothing left but courage.

Dave:hippie:

Hey Team!

Well...got my bike yesterday! She's a beauty!! Giant Escape...she I think I will take her for a spin this morning. My knee feels much better, but I'm still apprehensive about doing track/hill/speed, so instead I think I'll do a double workout. A 30 minute bike ride and then I'll take Gage out for 3 miles in the stroller. Tomorrow I may get up early and go a little longer on the bike....we'll see. LOVE that I have this option for cross training...I think it'll be much better for my injuries! :cloud9:

16 miler coming up on Sunday...had a really rough 15 miles two Sundays ago so I'm really using strategics for this weeks long run. VERY slow start, more food pre-run, Jordan will pace me on his new bike for the end miles...should go better. I hope.

pixiedust: for your ankle Vicky!! Take it easy for the next week or two...and I agree with your decision for MCM. I would have done the same!

Later Gators!

:bday: :cake: :cake: :bday:

party: Happy Birthday Dave!! party:

:bday:

Happy birthday young man! Hope you're having GRRRReat day!

(Sorry I know it's a bit early but you know I'm not a morning person)

Thank you Vicky, I'm a morning person also. I feel like a child that jumps up out of bed every morning because I'm afraid I will miss something.

This morning I'm excited to try out a new tweek to my technique, one I think will make a huge difference. I have been refining a lot because in walking speed is only partly effort, a lot is efficency.

Have a magical day guys.

Dave:hippie:

Dave - Happy Birthday!!!! :woohoo: Have fun today...train, eat, enjoy the fall and be your great Panda self!!

Vivky - I weighed in this morning and I was 137.2. I have long miles this weekend and I'm hoping that doesn't create my typical problem of justifying a splurge to "carb load" and then justifying splurging after because I already "worked it off". It's interesting that all the body really need is about 200 calories for a high carb item to carb load, yet so many of us feel the need to scarf down large amounts of junk (myself included). I will say though, that I am having a nice steak dinner on Sunday only because it is free. I was contacted about being a secret shopper for a local steakhouse. I got a gift card to eat and all I have to do is fill out a few questions afterwards. :thumbsup2 Oh and I did get my pants...they fit! A little sausage-like, but I think they are supposed to be like that. Just in the calf area they feel too tight...my calves pop out like a reverse muffin top...lol.

Lynn - I am in the market for a nice pair of bike shorts. I rode 6 miles yesterday and my butt hurts now...lol. I thought I'd be ok because 6 miles isn't really much, but I am skipping a ride today because of this. I found a good deal on tri shorts, but they said the chamois was smaller in those due to the running? I really don't even know where to start...and I know you have been riding for a bit. Any suggestions? :confused3

That's all I got for now. I'm gonna get some core in before work...have a great day all! :grouphug:

Thank you Eva.

The new tweek made a 30 sec per mile improvement in my walking speed. I'm getting stronger, life is good.:cloud9:

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team! Sorry I have been MIA.

Vicky - South Africa will be our second AbD trip - there are certain trips that are designated “adults only”, usually one 1 or 2 per year, and some destinations do not have the “adults only” option. The first one we did to Peru was adults only, and we really enjoyed that, especially after we learned that we would not have had the option of trying guinea pig or alpaca as they are not mentioned as food source with the kids. Would wrapping your ankle help?

Kim - You are doing such a great job with your training!

Dave - Happy Birthday!!!!

Mike - I have learned to write posts in word then copy and paste, that way, when it kicks me out, I do not lose what I planned to post!

Eva - great to hear from you again! Hope you enjoy your new bike - be careful, it can become addicting! Bike shorts are really an iffy thing, I have about 10 pair - maybe 5 that I like. I would just suggest buying one at a time, and if you find a style and brand you especially like, then go for a couple more.

Regina - We are taking lights to put up on our balcony when we go for Halloween, hopefully we will have a balcony that someone can see the lights! LOL Seeing the deer was great! We have antelope here, sometimes we see foxes.

Tandy - We will not stay at the campground at WDW even though we have the camper, it is cheaper for us to use our DVC points for a studio, but with the camper in the parking lot, we will have more of a kitchen for meals readily available! That trip will be next May.

AFM - We headed out Monday for camping trip, nice weather for it, Monday we did some geocaching, so we figure we walked about 3 miles, mostly not on roads, we just went thru fields, sometimes on trails. Haven’t done any bike rides since, but did spend an hour on spin bike yesterday, and the dogs got their walk. On Sat we are headed out again, this time to Washington DC - so lots more walking to be done.

Can’t say I did well this week on the point contest - never lost the pound I gained early, so I guess I get a -1 pt for that. I am good on the water, vitamin and exercise - so I will claim 3 points, total of 2 points.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Thank you Lynn. It's a great day for the next step on my journey to my destiny. I'm excited and looking forward.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team. I don't know where this week went? I could have sworn I had posted more. :confused3

Lynn: Geocaching looks like fun, but just can't get hubby interested. My son would enjoy it though, so who knows, maybe we'll try it sometime. Glad you had a nice time. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun in DC.

Dave: Happy birthday!!!!!!! Such a great milestone today. And, physically, you are doing so amazing. Keep it up!:thumbsup2

Eva: I have the same kind of trouble when I ride. I haven't invested in the bike shorts yet with the saddle, or whatever it is, but think I need to.

Rick: Thanks for asking about our little situation. It got resolved as best it can for now. The school set up the meeting with Harrison and the bully. At first, the bully denied it. Then, he said that he didn't realize he was hurting Harrison or that Harrison would have ever taken him seriously. The counselor let him know that if it ever happens again, he will be expelled. He also urged Harrison to come to him sooner, so I hope that'll happen next time. Harrison is much happier and has stopped throwing up in PE, so I feel good about it. The school took it pretty seriously. :thumbsup2

Vicky: I'm sorry to hear about your ankle. You're smart to defer MCM until next year. If you are going to focus on January, it's not worth the risk

Regina: I run through a huge park sometimes and there are deer all over the place. I love to run up on them and have them just stand there (they are so used to people, they don't care). I'm sure the family will be fine with what you cook. Doesn't everyone love steamed veggies? They are my favorite and my hubby loves them, but son has to hold his nose to eat them. Cracks me up everytime.

AFM: I am officially released to run. But, unfortunately, my ankle is REALLY bothering me. In PT, we've been working on my hips, feet and ankles. My ankles are ridiculously weak, apparently. So, with all these exercises, my left ankle is hurting all the time. It's the tendon on the outside, that then runs into my foot on the outside. I am thinking of holding off on running for a little while, but am chomping at the bit to get going. I can't do zumba this next week because of scheduling conflicts, but am going to go the following week, I think. I am going to have to focus really hard on keeping it a little lower impact for awhile. I am just a high impact girl.

I aced my bones test Thursday. I won't get my grade until Tuesday, but I know the material inside and out, so I'm sure I did really well. Muscles, ligaments and tendons are next. I think I know a little bit about these (being an x-personal trainer and all), so I should do okay.

My whole family has managed to get the entire weekend off!!!:cheer2:We are going to enjoy this 85 degree weekend and head out to the lake. I am super excited. I haven't seen my boating friends in a long time. I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with the silly dog. He can't go with us, because he can't stay on our friends boats. He can't stay home because we don't have a doggy door or a fenced in yard (electric fence only). So, it's looking like the kennel it is.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

P.S. Vicky, wanted to add that I want to jump back in to the challenge. New starting weight is 133.0.

Happy Friday team! Just a quick fly by post because I want to leave work early and get a head start on the long weekend!

Thanks so much for all the warm wishes and awesome posts on FB yesterday! I even went to the gym for a workout! I told my trainer at the end of the workout it was my birthday because I didn't want any special birthday exercises LOL. And of course, I ate waaaay too much. I didn't weigh in this morning because we went out for steaks last night and I know meat just sits in your stomach. I'm hoping it will have digested by tomorrow

So glad to see everyone get back on board with the weight loss challenge. I'll make the exercise of the week, curls and presses. If you have good knees, you can make it a squat, curl and press. I'll leave the weights up to you but try for a 4 sets of 12 with a break in between. The movements look like this:

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/3563711/squat_curl_press_multi_joint_exercise_fat_burn/

Again, don't do the squat if you have knee pain. Just the arm movements.

I'm going to try and get a pedicure in before dinner tonight and then I'm headed out with my family for dinner. I'm not looking forward to another big dinner so I'm going to try and keep it light.

That's exactly like my ankle... My PT has me doing lots of one-legged exercises like one legged step ups onto a plyo block (whatever they're called). I tape mine up during my runs and use compression socks. I'm experimenting with different ways of taping my ankle to get a better level of compression.

I'm glad that Harrison's counsellor took things seriously! I'm hoping that the bully takes the expulsion threat seriously! Enjoy the weekend with your family!

Will catch up with everyone later!! :wave2:

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Good luck Mike & Liz! You guys are racing machines!!

October

9 - Chicago Marathon, Chicago IL - Mike &Liz

Vicky: Happy belated birthday!!!! I didn't know it was your bday. I guess I should look at that list that you keep posting of everyone's special days.
Well, I hope that you can get that ankle back on track. I do the same step up exercise, plus twisting a towel with my foot, rotating my foot in, out, up and down with a band on it, and on and on and on. I can't believe that everything can hinge on a little ole ankle. I wish I'd gone to PT back in November,or December when I was having all those problems. I may not have torn my calf.

Mike and Liz: Good luck this weekend. I can't believe you guys are running another marathon this close to your first one! I am in awe!!!!!:worship:

Happy Saturday, all!

Eva:
Congrats on the new bike!

Lyn: Hope you are enjoying DC. My BIL lives there so we visit often yet I never tire of it.

Vicky and Dave:
Glad the birthdays were great! Vicky, didn't you realize that you can't gain weight on your birthday? ;) So MCM is definitely out this year?

Tandy:
So relieved to hear that Harrison's situation at school has improved. Congrats on the test!

Mike and Liz:
Hope the race tomorrow is a success!

AFM: This morning is my day to run 7 miles; however, I was bitten by a spider two days ago who had taken up residence in my running shoe. The top of my left foot is so swollen that I can't lace my shoe comfortably. If the swelling doesn't go down tomorrow then I'll head to the doc on Monday. If it does then I'll run tomorrow morning. We are heading to a college football game in Raleigh this afternoon where I'll try to avoid eating too much unhealthy food while tailgating. Oh, and I guess I better wear flip flops!

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Sounds like you are extending your birthday celebration beyond one day! (Scott will extend his for 2 weeks - the entire trip to WDW - longer if he could!)

Kim - Hi!

Dave - Sounds like you had a good birthday!

Mike - Good luck to you and Liz this weekend!

Tandy - Good job on the bones test! I am glad you are getting good weather - it is snowing here right now! (It should be rain - it is not THAT cold!)

Elizabeth - We will be in DC tomorrow. I am sure we will enjoy the trip.

AFM - Forecast for yesterday was for high wind, so we never tried to get out on the bikes, but the wind, although breezy, never did get strong - but I still walked the dogs and spent an hour on the spin bike. Today it is snowing! And windy! We are headed to Denver - were going to the Zoo, but will see what the weather is down there this afternoon.

Pixie dust to all who are in need! Especially for the ankles!!!

Have a great day team!

Hi everyone,
Dave~ Happy belated birthday! May you rock the new age group!

Vicky~ got you on FB , but happy birthday again!

Posting from my phone in Chicago. Hotel wants $13.95 for internet access. No way. Expo was great, bought some compression sleeves for my legs. Had pasta dinner on Lake Michigan. Signed up for three more races. Will post more soon. Liz hurt her leg in the last race, won't be running.
